Why do cracks appear in strange places like this?

It was a small scratch that looked like dust floating in the air, but I was able to recognize it because I had seen this twice before. Above all, the strange scenery where space seemed to be misaligned starting from the incontinence was something that was difficult to forget no matter how much time passed.

AlthoughI almost came close to the crack without realizing it, before I got closer than necessary, I took a step back.

I didn’t have very good memories of that unidentified crack in the air, so I didn’t want to get close to it even by mistake. Suddenly, I became a strange person who retreated at the end of the alley, staring into space, but I didn’t care because it wasn’t a place where other people would come in anyway.

I only stopped after increasing the distance so that even if a crack suddenly opened, I wouldn’t be eaten as quickly as before, but would still be able to see the crack at a glance.

During that series of processes, the traces of cracks remained in place without any change.

“…”

So, what is the reason those traces appeared in this alley, I wonder.

The cracks I had seen so far had two things in common. First, it appeared in an artificially created space. Second, there was a completely different space outside the gold.

However, this wasn’t a space created by someone using magic or illusion, but was just an ordinary alley.

I also considered the possibility that I had been trapped in a grand fantasy from the beginning, but I quickly dismissed that as too much of a guess.

Isn’t there simply a case where something like this happens naturally? No, is it too big of a leap to pass it on like that? When you can’t bear to do this or that with the assumptions swirling around in your head in confusion.

I thought that no matter what, I shouldn’t bring Dante near this crack.

It happened so quickly that I don’t remember it clearly, but all I remember is that starting from the crack in the air, holes appeared in various places, and in the end, one of the holes swallowed me.

Just as the dimension didn’t miss the opportunity to send me back, this crack could soon serve as an opportunity for Dante to return.

…It doesn’t work that way. I know Dante has to go back someday, but not in this sudden way.

Without knowing exactly what I was thinking, I slowly backed away with the intention of getting out of the situation. Then, the moment I kicked one of the countless pieces of trash that had caught my foot earlier, I heard a voice calling me from far away.

And the sound of footsteps getting louder as if they were coming this way.

“Ei, is there something there?”

“…”

At the same time, the sound of something breaking was clearly not an illusion.

As if Dante’s voice was a catalyst, the thin incontinence instantly split and broke on its own, increasing in size. Then, as if unable to withstand its weight, it dropped its pieces, creating a hole, and slowly began to move towards me.

…I don’t know why I’ve been running away so much lately.

Without thinking any more, I turned around and ran out of the place. Garbage hit my toes and made a noisy sound, but even though I stumbled because I stepped on them incorrectly, I didn’t stop my feet.

The feeling that something was chasing me, and the thought that it would be over the moment it was caught, took over my mind more easily than I could have imagined. Although it must have been an illusion, I felt like I could feel a distinct chill behind my back.

“Dante!”

Fortunately or unfortunately, the alley wasn’t long, so I was quickly able to catch Dante close to the entrance. Without any explanation, Dante suddenly started running after me as I grabbed his arm and ran quickly.

I left the dark alley, passed several buildings, and finally reached a crowded place.

At some point, the hole that had been following us disappeared as if it had been washed away.

I took a deep breath and continued to look around, and when I confirmed that there were no cracks in sight, I let out a deep sigh. Dante, who looked bewildered as he saw me casually sitting in a suitable place, came closer to me.

“Ei. What is this… Are you okay?”

“…Okay… No, actually, I’m not okay.”

I ran with all my might, not counting back and forth, and it felt like death. One of the sports I hated for a long time was running. I ran as much as other people did, but that was about it, and more than anything, I hated it because I was so out of breath.

Look at this, it feels like I’m going to collapse from the effort of just running like that. I sat down and tried to let my arms and legs go limp, yet when I noticed Dante’s expression was not good, I opened my mouth.

“…Do you remember how I came back to this dimension?”

“Yeah.”

“I found something inside it that was identical to the hole I saw back then.”

Dante’s eyes seemed to widen slightly as I said this while exhaling colorfully.

“I don’t know why it was there, why it was created, or at least why it caught my eye, but it was definitely there. Ah, really. Not a single day goes by quietly.”

“…Is that hole the reason you ran away like this?”

“Yeah.”

I answered, roughly wiping the sweat from my forehead.

“If I stay still, I might get caught up in it.”

“…”

“Obviously, there was no change when I first started, but at some point, it started to break apart and I got fed up.”

While I was roughly explaining the situation, my breathing calmed down. When I looked around the surroundings later, it seemed like this was probably a nearby shopping center.

What caught my eye was the overwhelming crowd of people, almost crowded, compared to the riverside or cafes. The tall building had lights on on every floor. Even without any reflection through the window, I could tell that there were probably as many people in the shopping center as there were here.

If we hadn’t found a place with so many people, would the hole have continued to follow us?

It was impossible to know right now, but I didn’t really want to know. If possible, I don’t want to encounter any more in the future. Since Dante can’t use magic outside, we’ll have to jump around like this every time.

Without even realizing that I was thinking of running away from the crack, I quickly got up from my seat.

“It would be nice to look around here since we’re here, but let’s just go home today. It’s too hard.”

“…If you want, alright.”

For some reason, Dante’s answer came a beat late, so I looked up at him somewhat puzzled. Dante’s face, which I checked from close enough to almost touch his body, was darker than usual, perhaps because of the shadows.

No, rather than that, I think it was because of the sudden calming gaze.

“Dante.”

An unknown glimmer seemed to hover within the black eyes. Dante’s name was briefly called, but instead of disappearing, the shimmering sound only became clearer.

But even then, when I extend my hand, he naturally lowers his posture. Just like it always has been.

“What’s wrong, all of a sudden? “=Did you have a hard time running?”

“No. It’s not like that.”

“Then why are you doing that?”

“…”

I held Dante’s face and made eye contact, yet I was never able to hear an answer. The face that was looking at me was distorted as if it was enduring pain, but it returned to its original state with difficulty.

It was enough to be bewildering, but I never thought I’d see an expression like this. Why on earth?

I unconsciously lowered my arm and grabbed Dante’s hand, but was horrified to realize that his hand was as cold as ice.

“Why are your hands so cold?”

“…Aren’t your hands warm?”

“Your body temperature is usually higher. What’s wrong, really?”

Are you really okay? Although I asked Dante with concern that I couldn’t hide, he just answered just like before.

Then, in the end, he held my hand firmly as if to try to distract me.

“I just want to rest for a bit. We’ve been wandering around for hours already.”

“…”

“I guess I’m tired from looking around so many unfamiliar places.”

However, for someone who was simply exhausted, he looked too precarious. It would be nice if you could at least let me know what you think.

So that I can understand why you’re anxious, so that I can comfort the anxious you.

But I wasn’t in the mood to force questions, so I just stared at Dante’s face all the way home.

It was because I was afraid of how Dante’s expression would change the moment I looked away.
