Since that day, Dana clung to Viego at every possible moment.

“Stop.” Even as he said that, Viego could not push her away. Still, he never crossed the line. Not even once. No matter what she did to tempt him, he didn’t give in.

I want to have a child…

Viego is responsible by nature, so he wouldn’t leave a child behind. He would stay by her side forever.

One night, Dana finally made up her mind and threw herself at him.

“No.” Viego refused her, even gripping her hips firmly to keep her from moving. “You can’t.”

Tears welled in her eyes. Dana couldn’t understand. He clearly wanted it too. Then why was he refusing her this strongly?

“Get down.”

Dejected, Dana slumped off his body. The shock was immense. Viego really has no intention of having a baby with me. Thinking that, she became even sadder, and she muttered. “Demian…”

At that name, Viego looked at her. Seeing his eyes sharpen, Dana spoke clearly. “Demian was much kinder than you, Viego.”

For a moment, the sharp heat spreading through Viego’s eyes made her tremble.

“You’re nothing like Demian at all.”

At his reaction, Dana became strangely excited, chattering like a madwoman.

“Demian did everything for me.”

“Is that so?”

“Yeah. He gave me everything I wanted and granted every wish I had.”

“And?”

“I’m just saying. That’s how Demian was.”

“Go on.”

“Demian—”

At that moment, Viego covered her mouth. “Be quiet.”

Pressing her down gently, he climbed over her body. The heavyweight made her burn with anticipation. Dana looked up at him with longing-filled eyes. Viego could not hide his twisted mood.

“You think I don’t know what you’re trying to do?”

Of course he knew. Even knowing, he still fell for it, so how could she stop? Because only at moments like this could she feel that he liked her.

Dana felt a cozy thrill in his jealous gaze. And whenever this happened, Viego would be the one to touch her deeply first. Normally, he never initiated even with a fingertip, yet now, like this. Just like this…

His touch alone overwhelmed her with ecstasy, and a desperate moan slipped from the mouth trapped beneath his palm. And as he heard her fervent response, Viego grew even hotter as well. But that wasn’t enough. The more he touched her, the more their bodies slid together, the more a burning craving seemed to blaze inside her belly, making her shudder.

More. Please, more. She looked up at him with those eyes, almost pleading. But…

“No.” Viego panted heavily. His golden hair trembled. His refined brow twisted, and hot breath spilled between his lips.

The next moment, the pleasure became overwhelming, and tears streamed down her cheeks. She could no longer continue thinking. Yet the emptiness that followed afterward was enormous. Dana felt painfully hollow. Why? Why on earth? Why won’t you hold me? Why won’t you form a deeper bond with me?

As she lay limp and dazed, Viego, who had been catching his breath above her, rose from the bed. He brought a basin of water, sat beside the bed, and wiped her soiled stomach and chest with a wet cloth. Suddenly, anger surged within her. At this rate, she would never get pregnant!

“Is it because you don’t want to take responsibility for me?”

The hand wiping her skin paused. Dana glared at him with sorrowful eyes.

“So you just avoid doing anything you’d have to take responsibility for.”

There was no reply.

When Viego silently resumed cleaning her, Dana roughly slapped his hand away. “You just don’t like me because I’m strange, right?”

A sigh-like laugh slipped from Viego’s lips. “So you know you’re strange.”

“…”

That’s so mean!

Just as her tears threatened to fall, Viego set down the cloth and stroked her pearl-colored hair. At his touch, Dana stiffened.

“Dana.”

Viego gazed at her steadily with serious eyes. Meeting them, warmth seeped into her heart. She didn’t want that. She really didn’t… Ah. I really like Viego so much. But she felt the knot in her chest loosen on its own. It was an unavoidable reaction.

“There’s a lily-of-the-valley scent coming from you.”

You’re the one. Even your voice feels like it carries a fragrance.

“Why is that?” Just those few words drenched her in sweetness and left her dazed. She felt pathetic for being so easily swayed.

“…Lily-of-the-valley bloomed in the ranch flowerbed.”

Annoyed that her mood had lifted so quickly, Dana muttered in a small voice. “They’re so pretty, so I’ve been taking care of them carefully. I guess the scent rubbed off on me.”

It was actually a lie. Not long ago, she had secretly bought lily-of-the-valley–scented soap in the village. The shopkeeper had said it was a fragrance that stimulated men’s sexual desire, and she had been persuaded into buying it…

“You like lily of the valley?” Unaware of her ulterior motive, Viego asked seriously, genuinely curious.

I don’t know. I’m not interested in flowers. I just want to bear a child with you. But she couldn’t say that, so Dana just nodded. “Yeah. I like them.”

“…”

“But I like you more, Viego.”

Am I an idiot? She had planned to stay sulky a little longer, but she simply couldn’t.

Half-burying her cheek in the bedsheet, Dana looked up at him and smiled brightly. “I like you, Viego.” She gently wrapped her fingers around his. “You’re my favorite person in the world.”

“…”

“What about you? You like me too, right?”

Viego did not answer. He simply remained submerged in a silence as deep as late night, stroking her hair. Though there was no reply, his touch was so gentle that Dana became intoxicated with happiness from that alone.

“I like you so much, Viego.”

Sleepiness washed over her. Dana slowly closed her eyes.

“I like you, Viego.”

Surrendering to sleep, she murmured endlessly like sleep-talk.

“I like you. I really like you…”

It was a few days later. The ranch flowerbed was filled with lily of the valley. It was a gift from Viego. From that day on, lily of the valley became Dana’s favorite thing in the world.

Time continued to pass. After the peak of heat faded, summer finally began to end. One day, Viego suddenly realized something.

“Viego.”

Come to think of it, he’d always hated his own name. Viego despised it because it had been given by his grandfather. And yet…

“Viego.”

Was my name always this beautiful?

“Viego!”

The way she called his name sounded like music, always making him listen closely, wishing only that the performance would continue forever without ending…

“Viego, over here!”

As if enchanted by a captivating melody, Viego was drawn toward it. And he thought that he would probably never forget this scene for the rest of his life.

“Viego! Hurry!”

The clear mountain air, grasslands swaying like green waves, sheep wandering across them. The faint fragrance of lily of the valley spreads throughout the ranch, and…

“Viego!”

Her.

The moment Dana smiled among the pure white flock would remain in his heart for a long, long time without fading. Because brief happiness is, by nature, like that.

“Viego! Look at this!”

Viego moved his legs slowly. The closer he got, the more he heard it. The cracking sound of something fracturing within this terrifyingly perfect scene.

“It’s your birthday present!”

And he saw more clearly. The redness stains the corners of Dana’s mouth. She was completely red. Her lips and chin, her hands, her clothes, even the grass around her.

“Happy birthday!”

And the reddest thing of all was…

“You should eat too, Viego!”

The corpse of a sheep.

“It’s really delicious!” Dana smiled. It was a smile drenched in blood.

At the beginning of fall, Dana’s madness began.
