With Giyet’s help, all I was doing was pretending to be someone else, specifically the assistant ‘Wot,’ to provide treatment.
Yeah, maybe this is even better. I’m completely twisting the original story, aren’t I?
Soon, I would face regret male lead #1, Marquis Berto. As the weak female lead of this regretful novel, there were probably only two ways I could confront him while ignoring the original plot’s force.
1. Revive my father-in-law, who is a master of magic, and receive his textbook as a reward, train, and become stronger.
2. Add the keyword #Secretlystrong tag to my character as the ‘female lead’ and completely twist the original story.
Alright, I’m going to mess up this damned regret novel completely! By now, I was starting to feel a thrill in destroying the original plot.
Clutching my father’s necklace, I forced a stiff smile. I was so immersed in the role that I didn’t even notice the servants and maids nearby exchanging subtle glances.
* * *
The final treatment for former Duke Neslan Kalinos began. And the person conducting this treatment was none other than Giyet, once an eccentric billionaire doctor, now known as the saint of the back alleys. Apparently, he was bringing an assistant to help with the treatment?
Doctors who had tried to treat the former Duke Kalinos flocked to the mansion like clouds to review the medical techniques of Giyet, who had been in seclusion for so long.
“No matter how great Giyet is, we must verify it ourselves.”
“It’s a precious person’s life, so it needs to be checked by many.”
However, the true intentions of these doctors were different.
Being the Kalinos family’s personal doctor means enjoying honor and wealth. I wish I could say a word and secure such a position for myself.
I need to learn Giyet’s technique. I’m sure he’s improved, that annoying b*stard!
Ten people gathered, some hiding their ulterior motives, while others burned with a passion for medicine. Even just receiving an invitation was enough to make one hold their head high. Moreover, they were all authorities in the academic world, such as professors from the medical academy. But in the parlor of Duke Kalinos’s mansion, gathered for the treatment, they discovered an unexpected little assistant by Neslan’s bedside.
“Who’s that next to Giyet?”
“Looks like a woman. It’s hard to see her face because of the hat.”
“Hmm, an assistant? Ah, now that I think about it, there were rumors that Giyet had an assistant.”
“Such a delicate frame.”
Giyet’s assistant seemed like an intrusive presence in that setting.
And that intruder is me. I pulled my hat down further and let out a deep sigh.
Giyet, with a mischievous expression, looked over at the doctors and said, “If you’re all going to chatter noisily, shut up and get out. I brought this assistant because without her, I feel like my skills are halved. She’s a hundred times better than you meddlesome fools.”
“Y-Yes.”
But the doctors started whispering behind his back.
“That assistant looks incompetent.”
I want to punch them, but I’ll hold back for now. I’m just the assistant. Besides, we had already arrived at Neslan’s door under the butler’s guidance.
As the door opened, Neslan, now pale, was lying on the bed.
“Then, please proceed with the examination.”
“Indeed, there seems to be no improvement compared to before.”
Seeing Neslan’s expression sink heavily, I felt a strange sense of affection, but at the same time my heart ached. With narrowed eyes, I focused on Giyet’s arm and made a small gesture, poking with my index finger, whispering softly. I had already informed him about my constitution and plan.
“Um, Giyet. Place our hand where the mana is most concentrated.”
“Like this?” Giyet, with a trusting gaze, placed his hand near the heart. I quickly overlapped my hand over his and took a deep breath.
No time for escapism, let’s get this done quickly. Closing my eyes, I concentrated quietly, feeling the pulsating flow of mana. At that moment, I heard the doctors mocking me from the sidelines.
“What’s with that assistant? Just standing there won’t do anything.”
“A non-qualified person should step out.”
Ignoring the sound of their tutting, I slowly raised my hand. I shaped the mana flowing from my hand into a spear. With the shimmering mana spear, I pierced right next to his heart. It was swift and rough, with a sound as if the heart was being pierced. This all happened in an instant, so fast that no one could stop me.
“Ugh, ugh!” Neslan, who had been sitting upright, suddenly jerked up as if his body was being pumped, like a fish flopping around. Gasps of shock echoed around us.
There’s no time. I have to do this quickly! I immediately sent healing magic from my hand. Just like I had done for Marquis Berto in my past life, but this time with even more powerful intent.
At that moment, the rotten mana that had been stagnating near his heart began to slowly flow out. Watching the black mana disperse like smoke, I didn’t even breathe. I just kept pressing on his heart, as if massaging it.
Finally, as the black smoke gradually vanished into the air, Neslan’s body suddenly slumped down. His body went limp, like a corpse.
“I-Is Lord Neslan… d-dead?”
“What on earth is going on?”
“Arrest the criminal!”
Someone who had quickly regained their composure grabbed me by the neck and threw me to the ground. Ah, damn. My small body was tossed onto the floor, and my knees hit hard, breaking my concentration. I could see the shocked expressions of everyone, accompanied by a chilling intent that seemed ready to kill me.
“The former duke has passed away.”
“Arrest the assassin.”
The knights, who had been standing frozen with disbelief at the bizarre treatment, finally snapped back to reality and surrounded me. As they clamped down on my arms, I couldn’t breathe.
“Uuh… Cough, cough.” With my face pressed against the floor, I could only cough repeatedly as the head butler placed his foot on my head and pressed down hard.
“This person murders the former duke!”
“N-No, His Grace isn’t, cough, dead…”
Giyet, who had been struggling to grasp the situation, quickly placed his hand under Neslan’s nose and exclaimed. “The duke is still alive!”
“How can we trust Giyet’s words that he is alive?”
But no one paid attention to Giyet. Everyone, including the knight with a piercing gaze, directed their cold stares at me. I could feel their eyes piercing through an opaque veil, glaring at me.
Bound to the floor and barely able to breathe, I managed to speak. “It wasn’t, mur, cough, der.”
“You stabbed the former duke’s heart!”
“H-His Grace’s mana flow was blocked, and it was necessary to unblock it with a precise method.”
“Your tongue is too long.” The head butler, unable to contain his anger, forcibly lifted my arm.
Damn it, Neslan needs to wake up soon!
Just then, it happened.
“Cough, cough!”
In that critical moment, Neslan coughed up blood and then opened his eyes again. His complexion, which had been ashen, returned to a healthy hue, and color slowly returned to his lips.
“What’s going on? What just happened?” He touched his chest, wearing an expression of disbelief that, despite having been pierced, there was no blood flowing from his heart. “My body feels so light. I used to feel sluggish every day. What on earth?”
“Y-Your Grace?”
“There’s no more blood. Even the coughing stopped.”
The head butler’s hand dropped to his side. I struggled on the floor before finally managing to stand up. If I end up bruised, that guy’s going to pay.
The head butler hurriedly approached Neslan. Behind me, I could hear the doctors whispering frantically.
“W-What’s going on?”
“Did you see that?”
“B-But he was definitely stabbed in the heart…”
Giyet and the doctors surrounded Neslan, checking his pulse and causing a commotion.
“Gasp. The mana circuit blocked in his heart has opened up.”
“What?”
“J-Just like before, you’re healthy again, Lord Neslan!”
