The club room was completely empty.

Neither the main hallway nor the room where interviews had been conducted the other day had anyone in them.

“Is anyone here? Yoo Seoha sunbaenim?”

I wandered from room to room like a vagabond, when I found someone in the library section.

An extremely delicate and graceful-looking person.

Their blue hair, reaching down to their shoulders, was neatly tied.

I thought they were female because of their pretty face, but looking at the uniform, they’re male.

“Here to join? Recruitment for new members has closed.”

“I came to meet Yoo Seoha sunbaenim. And I joined yesterday.”

“Ah, so you’re Yeon Sora? Nice to meet you. I’m Nam Ijin. I’m a third-year senior in the same club.”

A name I’ve never heard before.

An extra not even mentioned in the story.

“The president got called by a professor, so it’ll take some time. Want to sit and wait?”

“Yes.”

“Make yourself comfortable.”

The frail-looking man gestured for me to sit, then continued his work.

He was reading an expensive-looking hardcover book while taking notes in a separate notebook.

Books with titles like <Eastern Mythology>, <Monsters in Mythology> were piled high, and on the desk lay a postcard with a monster drawn on it.

An illustration of a creature with a human upper body and snake lower body.

“Is this monster a real existing monster?”

After speaking, I worried I might be interrupting. But the frail man didn’t seem to mind at all and gave me a kind smile.

“Who knows? It might exist, or it might not. There are eyewitness accounts but no proof yet.”

“Do you think it’s a mythical-grade monster, sunbaenim?”

“Who knows? I’ve looked through 298 mythologies, but I haven’t found one that matches exactly yet, so I’m reviewing again.”

This person is kind.

And clearly a monster specialist.

Since I’ve met him, let me ask some questions while waiting for my unnie.

“Is there such a thing as an insect-type monster that follows human commands?”

“If it follows human commands, it wouldn’t be a monster but a summon or clone, right?”

“Right, I was wondering if there are insect-type ones too.”

While I’m at it, let me investigate the grasshopper the subordinate uses.

Summons and clones appearing in <On the Brink of Destruction> are mostly mammals, amphibians, or birds.

Insects were never even mentioned in the story.

I searched this world’s data diligently on my device too, but there was no talk of insect-type summons or clones.

But a monster otaku might know.

“Insect-type summons… It’s not impossible to make, but I don’t think anyone would go through that trouble.”

“Why not?”

“They’re not economical. When making summons, you go through a subjugation stage. There’s a baseline cost involved… and insects have small brain capacity, so they can’t execute complex commands. At most one or two simple commands would be the limit, right?”

It was an impromptu question, but answers flow smoothly.

“But the most fatal disadvantage is lifespan. Insects have short lifespans, don’t they? You’d be better off adding a bit more cost to make a bird-type. There’s no reason to insist on insects.”

“But wouldn’t there be some advantage unique to insects? Like maybe the short lifespan being an advantage…”

“I heard you were someone who has interesting imagination… Right, that could be. The advantage of a short lifespan…”

The mastermind isn’t an idiot either—there must be a reason for insisting on insects.

I have absolutely no clue what that reason is, but a monster specialist might know.

“Short lifespan means fast evolution. Strong reproductive ability too. Beyond that, it would depend on which insect specifically…”

“What about grasshoppers or flies?”

“Grasshoppers or flies?”

The senior rested his chin in thought.

His eyes sparkled—seems like he doesn’t dislike this kind of question.

“Interesting. First, both have the habit of forming swarms. And swarms of flies or grasshoppers appear as omens of disaster in the Bible too. Flies feed on corpses to reproduce, so that negative image probably developed…”

Suddenly a huge smile appeared on the senior’s face.

“Grasshoppers have somewhat interesting characteristics, you know? They’re also called the Jekyll and Hyde trait—normally they live solitary, quiet lives, but when a specific signal arrives, they suddenly swarm together in groups and cause disasters.”

What’s with that eerie setting?

“Would grasshopper-type summons be like that too?”

“Who knows? Monsters have similarities to actual creatures but differences too. If you wanted to use grasshopper-type summons, you’d have to repeat experiments to verify the data.”

Something feels ominous.

In <On the Brink of Destruction>, monster escape incidents appear consistently.

They don’t even cause much damage, readers curse it so much, yet they really do keep appearing consistently.

But what if… those were experiments?

In other words, if the goal from the start wasn’t causing casualties but confirming the grasshopper’s performance?

Goosebumps rose all over and I was scratching my arms when—

“Huh? Sora’s here?”

Yoo Seoha arrived.

“Want to come to my room? Let’s talk just the two of us.”

* * *

My unnie personally brewed tea for me.

An unusual tea swirling with all the colors of the rainbow.

Could this be…

“Phoenix feather tea. It’s good for recovering stamina, so drink it all.”

“This is incredibly expensive from what I know…”

“I received it as a gift, so don’t worry.”

As expected, befitting an heiress of a Big 4 guild, she spends generously.

My unnie’s beauty was in top form today too.

Dewy skin as a baseline, with elegant yet sophisticated elongated Eastern eyes.

Every time she blinked, her long eyelashes fluttered like a fan, and her waist-length straight hair swished so beautifully—she’s basically a walking shampoo commercial.

“Shall we start with yesterday’s discussion?”

My unnie, even her voice has conditioner in it.

Why does everything about her shimmer?

“Actually, I had some questions about the terrorist incident you mentioned yesterday…”

After that came detailed questions about the terrorist incident.

How many terrorists, where they were positioned, how many Devil’s Seeds were used, what abilities the terrorists had, et cetera.

“But why didn’t you consider external reinforcement forces?”

“I created the scenario assuming the academy wouldn’t inform external parties.”

“That’s the part I don’t understand most. Why?”

Because that’s how it was in the original.

In <On the Brink of Destruction>, the terrorist incident happens at the peak of the academy abolishment movement.

Parents were up in arms demanding closure, so it was difficult to go ‘This time a terrorist incident happened, can anyone help?’

But since I’ve possessed, it’ll change.

I buttoned the first button differently.

The awakening test incident itself became something that never happened.

“There’s a direct line to the Association, so not utilizing it feels awkward.”

“That’s true.”

“Wouldn’t it be more natural to modify that?”

“Yes, I think you’re right, sunbaenim.”

The academy will send a support request externally, and the mastermind isn’t an idiot, so they’ll make appropriate moves in response.

Since this wasn’t described in the original, I have absolutely no idea what that would be.

“…Considering modifications, wouldn’t they first block all teleportation? And if I were a terrorist, I’d trigger another incident downtown at the same time to disperse personnel there. A diversionary incident.”

“?”

“The key is information manipulation. You’d need to make them deploy physical-type ability users to the diversionary incident. And guide the reinforcements sent to the academy to consist only of elemental mana types. Then even when reinforcements arrive, they’d be equally trapped in the hostage situation and unable to do anything, right? Next, regarding this diversionary incident—I thought of incidents that would only deploy physical types, and there are 32 proposals total. Among these, the ones requiring capital…”

What?

My unnie was smoothly explaining the terrorists’ expected actions.

Whether she’d run simulations or what, it was pouring out in the volume of a whole book.

Hearing it, a cunning thought crept up.

‘Maybe this…’

If I tell my unnie the mastermind’s scenario, she’ll revise it into a version considering butterfly effects.

What if I take that revised answer and deliver it to Gyeon Junhwi in prophecy format?

It’s a bit of a stopgap solution… but it might help quite a bit with my prophet cosplay.

“Sora, you have good imagination, but relying only on imagination means you miss a lot. Reading actual historical cases and military strategy books would give you lots of reference for ideas. Since we’re on the topic, want me to recommend some books?”

“Yes!”

One thing’s certain.

I absolutely need this club.

For destruction prevention!

In the library section, that frail sunbaenim from earlier was still there.

“President! Finished talking already? That was fast?”

“This week is freshman protection period. All activities have to end before 6 PM.”

“There’s still 6 minutes left, though?”

“Right, so I was just going to recommend some basic books…”

After that, the books my unnie handed me numbered seven.

<World History Through Warfare>, <The Laws of Power>, <On War>, <The Prince>…

Just from the titles, they’re light-years away from my interests.

But the frail sunbae butted in.

“If you’re recommending books, should I recommend some too? I have materials that could be useful regarding the insect-type summons we talked about earlier…”

I felt like convulsions might occur on my face, but I barely managed to nod.

Right, let’s study…

For destruction prevention.

Since it’s come to this, I decided to request other book recommendations with a self-abandoning mindset.

“Sunbaenim, do you have any books about chimeras?”

“Of course. What specifically do you want to know?”

I can’t exactly say ‘How to deal with chimeras appearing at a shopping mall movie theater…’

Let me phrase it vaguely.

“I’m curious what to do if a chimera swarm appeared in the city center.”

“That wouldn’t be common though?”

“Really?”

“Chimeras don’t attack in swarms. During outbreaks, swarms have been witnessed a few times though… Wait, let me find the case study collection for you.”

With case studies added on top, the reading material really is mountainous.

When on earth will I read all this?

* * *

When on earth will I read it all? I have to read it all today.

Tomorrow, 24-hour suspect surveillance is scheduled.

After returning to my room, I deeply sighed looking at the tower of stacked books.

Those are all specialized texts. I don’t want to read them!

While searching for legitimate reasons to procrastinate, I remembered I hadn’t checked intimacy levels.

【Viewing intimacy with characters.】

▷ Yeom Juwan (Lvl. 99, Intimacy 99%)

▷ Gyeon Junhwi (Lvl. 99, Intimacy -15%)

▷ Ha Seonwoo (Lvl. 79, Intimacy 35%)

▷ Min Dorim (Lvl. 53, Intimacy 28%)

▷ Ki Hyeonmin (Lvl. 99, Intimacy -87%)

▷ Han Boram (Lvl. 99, Intimacy 96%)

▷ Yoo Seoha (Lvl. 61, Intimacy 85%)(⇧3%)

I failed to hit 90%.

My unnie might find me suspicious.

She used <Preview> on me several times today.

‘I should’ve been more careful…’

Actually, after the conversation with the frail sunbae, my concentration had dropped considerably.

No matter how I look at it, that grasshopper is too ominous.

Both flies and grasshoppers are called omens of disaster.

They travel in swarms.

And in the latter half of <On the Brink of Destruction>, a monster army appears.

Somehow I feel like this is all connected…

  1. Thank you so much for translating this! it could be park rahee since she was “praying” during the awakening test. Or it could be none of the suspects
