“A new promise?”

“Yeah. I realized something while going through this. Since we could face a life-threatening crisis next time too, I want to establish a course of action in advance.”

Yeom Juwan tilted his head.

When she brought up the word ‘promise,’ he’d definitely thought it would relate to the abyss, but Yeon Sora was talking about something completely different as if that problem no longer needed addressing.

…What a relief.

Yeom Juwan, who’d wanted to move on to a different topic somehow, asked with a smile.

“What kind of promise?”

“Let’s die together.”

“Huh?”

“Let’s absolutely never do that thing where one person sacrifices themselves saying stuff like ‘At least you survive alone.’ If we’re going to live, we all live together, and if it looks like we’ll die, we just all die together.”

What Yeon Sora was saying was so out of the blue it was hard to immediately understand. Seeing Yeom Juwan’s confused expression, she began explaining methodically.

“What if, let’s say, in this incident I’d died saving you. And only you survived. How do you think you’d feel?”

“I think… it’d be better if I died instead?”

“Same for me. If you died saving me, Juwan, I wouldn’t be happy at all. So let’s prevent that situation in advance. Originally, the one who survives alone ends up in more hell.”

Yeon Sora wore an expression he’d never seen before.

A face that looked like tears would pour out any moment, but she instantly shook off that sadness and smiled.

“We don’t care whether it’s hell or heaven, so let’s unconditionally go together as a set. Let’s die at the same time, same place. Just promise me that one thing.”

Yeon Sora held out her finger in a motion close to coercion. Yeom Juwan hooked his finger around hers while laughing in disbelief.

“You’re promising?”

“Yeah.”

“If you break the promise and die, I’ll drag you out of your grave, revive you, and start over, alright? I really can do that, you know?”

“Ah, I got it.”

“Haah… The problem is Juwan, you’re always trying to protect people. Looking at it, you’re the most dangerous one.”

Yeom Juwan gave a bitter smile.

Because Yeon Sora doesn’t know his true feelings, she says things like that. He himself is a hypocrite.

But Yeon Sora was grumbling by herself as if complaining.

“Normal people are busy just looking after their own bodies, you know? At least kind people protect those weaker than themselves. But the problem with you, Juwan, is you try to protect even people stronger than you. Of course, that’s the aspect I like most about you, but the more I watch, the more anxious I get.”

“I’ve never done that…?”

“What are you talking about? When the Outbreak happened, you tried to go in with Ki Hyeonmin too, didn’t you?”

“……”

“Normal people would go ‘Yeah, you’re strong so you handle it!’ but you’re a kid who thinks ‘Even I could be of help.’ Of course… even I… found it too painful to send Ki Hyeonmin alone… but I at least calculated to some degree. But the problem with you, Juwan, is you don’t even do that.”

It’s not true.

He himself is a hypocrite.

But…

He couldn’t refute Yeon Sora’s words either.

Ki Hyeonmin was a classmate with whom he had no rapport, and was overwhelmingly stronger than himself. He knew that, but absolutely couldn’t send him into the rift alone.

He’d fled reluctantly saying he had to protect other team members… but if not for that, Yeom Juwan would have entered the rift following Ki Hyeonmin without hesitation.

Things like the opponent being strong, himself being weak, possibly dying—none of it mattered.

Is this… hypocrisy too?

While Yeom Juwan experienced brief confusion, Yeon Sora had already moved on to a different topic.

“But Juwan, aren’t you curious about the future?”

A laugh escaped involuntarily.

“You know you seem like a completely different person sometimes, right?”

“That’s… I told you. After gaining calamity-class abilities and seeing the future, my perspective changed.”

“Does that explain it?”

“Whew… Juwan, we’re still fresh 17-year-old adolescent teens. It’s the age to try various character concepts.”

“Pfft.”

“And it’s not just me—Ki Hyeonmin was a loner but now hangs out with people, Han Boram made lots of friends, and Seong Hayul stopped pretending to be innocent, right?”

She’s gotten so shameless. Should he say she looks at ease…

But… she looks happy.

Moreover, he couldn’t definitively say she’d changed from before.

‘Because I couldn’t tell what she was thinking inside.’

Yeon Sora had never once talked about herself. She barely spoke at all, to the point of worrying whether she had selective mutism.

Was she holding such thoughts inside all along?

“Ah, right! There’s something important!”

Yeon Sora looked this way again with a bright smile.

A smile that only he could handle before—now everyone was cheering for it.

It’s a good thing, but… strangely, he disliked that a little.

“About my Sleeping Beauty disease!”

“It’s not a disease, it’s Kleine-Levin Syndrome.”

“Yeah, that. I talked with Ki Hyeonmin and it might actually become like a fairy tale, you know? I’m worried that if I mess up I might sleep for 100 years, so I think safety measures are needed. So if I hibernate, will you be my prince, Juwan?”

“What?”

It’s too absurd to have words for.

But Yeon Sora was boldly demanding while looking at Yeom Juwan.

“Kiss me if I fall asleep.”

“Me?”

“Shouldn’t you obviously be on the candidate list for Yeon Sora’s prince?”

“What are you even saying?”

Yeom Juwan turned his head with a light laugh, but an unnecessary warmth rose in his face. But Yeon Sora didn’t give up and persistently followed.

“You’ll promise, right?”

* * *

The session with Juwan proceeded reasonably well.

Originally I was going to ask where he went after meeting the grasshopper… but somehow I got an intuition that I shouldn’t ask.

‘You shouldn’t carelessly touch trauma.’

Our Juwan has memories of being abused.

That’s not an area I can do anything about. Because I’m not a psychiatrist.

What I know is just that I can’t force on my baby something I wouldn’t want done to myself.

I have no memories of being abused, but…

Even I have things I can’t tell anyone. In fact, in my previous life, I never told anyone why my father passed away. Not even until the moment of death.

I probably couldn’t even after death. Even if by some chance I do a bin-coming-out and confess my past to Juwan… I still don’t know if I could say it.

‘I can’t force on my baby something I can’t do myself.’

In cases like this, it’s polite to just pretend not to notice.

The past isn’t important anyway.

What matters is what needs to be done going forward.

‘We absolutely have to do set activities!’

This is a fact I realized while talking with Juwan.

The ending of <On the Brink of Destruction> that I hated so much.

Small misalignments between people who truly cared for each other.

The tragedy resulting from that…

Yeom Juwan, Ki Hyeonmin, Gyeon Junhwi.

They all took routes sacrificing themselves for party members. Because that didn’t get communicated, the timing went wrong… and ultimately Ki Hyeonmin ended up taking his own life attempting a reset.

To prevent that, I need to gradually instill the habit of ‘if we live, we all live together, if we die, we die together’ starting now.

So not a single person gets left behind.

I recorded that in my notepad too before moving on to important business, but this also isn’t easy.

“So about the promise?”

“Do you even know what you’re saying right now?”

The Sleeping Beauty promise needs to be stamped thoroughly too. Absolutely.

But our Juwan’s face has turned red and he keeps avoiding me, which is so insanely cute it makes me chase after him.

“Are you going to promise or not?”

“Haah… Alri—”

Right when the important word was about to come out,

“Cadet Yeon Sora!”

The door burst open and Professor Ban entered.

Has an hour already passed?

Seems I messed up the time distribution. I didn’t even start on how strong our Juwan becomes in the future…

Professor Ban was smiling brightly while rubbing his hands together.

“How is it! Don’t you feel lighter? Have you checked your mana levels?”

“Not yet.”

“Let’s check now.”

It’s a face full of expectations… but honestly I’m not sure. My premium fuel didn’t respond at all even to the facilities in the training building.

But…

【Checking ‘Yeon Sora’s’ comprehensive stats.】

▷ Expendable Stats

– Stamina 1/1 – Mana 0/12 (↑2)

▷ Non-Expendable Stats

– Strength 1 – Endurance 1

– Agility 0 – Intelligence 15

It really went up.

The number that was originally 10 is now 12.

Professor Ban who read my expression hopped up and down.

“As expected! Is it effective?”

“A little? It was originally 10 but went up to 12.”

“Haha, is that so!”

It’s good to honestly reveal numbers like this.

That way they can create a schedule optimized for me based on records.

Professor Ban was wearing a smile somewhat like a scheming courtier.

“So… do you have any more questions?”

“It’s amazing. By any chance… if I spent 12 hours here, would it go up 12 times?”

“Unfortunately not. Once expanded, mana needs to go through a kind of stabilization period. Anything too excessive isn’t good. Using a sauna for one hour versus 12 hours is completely different.”

“I see.”

“With this, have you gained a little trust in my technical capabilities?”

“Of course.”

“Then…!”

“However, I haven’t experienced the research Researcher Cheon Ari mentioned yet, so I’ll tell you again after proceeding.”

I smiled brightly at Professor Ban.

Next week I’ll go to researcher unnie and demand samples. If I compare with Professor Ban’s results, unnie will give me something better, and if I bring that and tell Professor Ban, he’ll also raise his price… well, roughly that principle.

But that’s something to do later.

“I’ll tell you next week. It’s the weekend starting now.”

Finally the long-awaited weekend!

Moreover, I have several extremely important matters this weekend.

* * *

After escaping the last class, I enjoyed my Friday night.

Not only the team members who’d crossed the threshold of death together this time, but even Lee Hyojun and No Jitae gathered to hold a board game party in the game room.

Amazingly… Ki Hyeonmin attended this gathering from beginning to end.

“Ki Hyeonmin bankrupt again!!!!”

“…There seems to be manipulation. Constantly hitting the same trap is statistically abnormal.”

“This is a strategy game!!! If you don’t change your strategy, you’ll get the same result no matter how many times you play!”

I can’t believe it even seeing it with my own two eyes.

Ki Hyeonmin… playing board games with other people from the start of the semester?

Is this a parallel world?

“J-Junhwi would be g-good too if he came…”

“Right.”

“Why is Gyeon Junhwi so busy?”

“I-it’s because of us. I-in the incident investigation, Junhwi is the only witness.”

The regrettable part is that Gyeon Junhwi couldn’t participate.

Our Junhwi is currently in Phoenix Guild’s guest room. Outside Yeouido, the hearing is gradually wrapping up, but tomorrow Gyeon Junhwi will directly attend as an incident witness.

And to avoid interfering with classes, he went from Friday evening and returns Saturday evening. Therefore, I decided to do fortune-teller talk with him on Sunday.

More than that, there’s something else to do right now.

I keep only watching the clock when Juwan told me important news.

“Sora, Min Dorim sunbae came back.”

The moment I heard the news, I sprang up from my seat.

Min Dorim had practical training until today, came back, and has been spending over two hours just in the bathhouse.

He left my DMs on read and only read Juwan’s messages.

He’s definitely… avoiding me.

“Where is he now?”

“He still hasn’t eaten dinner, so the cafeteria?”

“I’m! Going out for a bit and coming back!”
