Empress’ Game: Make-up Master Chapter 65 - Enemies on a Narrow Road
It was him. It was actually him. Wu Sheyue nearly could not sit still. This was the person who had snuck into her courtyard that night.
Once Yu Jing said that, the other young masters were also very willing. Watching beauties play games was naturally pleasant. They agreed one after another. “The young prince really knows how to take pity on us.”
“Let’s sit and rest for a while.”
Han Yi had thought Yu Jing, who usually disliked lively scenes, would refuse. He had not expected him to agree. After a brief pause, he opened his fan with a mischievous smile and shook it. “Fine, then I hope the ladies don’t mind.”
Many of the women here were delighted too. They rarely had the chance to interact with these young masters, especially Heir Han and the young prince, whom they seldom saw. They all waved their hands and said they did not mind.
The most excited was Wu Jinghua. She had never thought that Heir Han and the young prince, two such figures, would accept her invitation. For a moment, her heart bloomed with joy, as if they must have seen her differently.
Wu Jinghua’s cheeks were red, as if heat steamed from her whole body. She walked over with delicate lotus steps and said gently, “Young masters, please make yourselves comfortable.”
After that, she softly ordered servants to bring chairs. Ever since these young masters had arrived, every movement she made was reserved and careful.
Such a good opportunity, and by coincidence Wu Liuyun was not present. Naturally, she had to highlight herself.
Whether coincidentally or not, when Wu Jinghua sat down again, she was very close to Yu Jing and Han Yi.
The young lady who had drawn a paper slip and not yet composed looked left and right. Seeing that everyone was seated, she shyly unfolded the slip and said, “Then I’ll begin. Mine is the character ‘spring.’ Mm… ‘In one morning the snow stretches endless; the cold has come, and spring has not yet arrived.'”
Perhaps because she was nervous, the poem was actually not bad, only her voice was a little soft.
At this moment, Wu Sheyue’s mind was no longer on the game. Ever since she recognized Yu Jing, her mind was full of what had happened that night, full of his phrase “big puppets.”
Wu Sheyue’s anger had not yet settled. But there were too many people here, so she could only force her gaze away from Yu Jing, lest seeing those eyes make her even angrier.
Yu Jing sat somewhat far from Wu Sheyue. He did not look at her again, as if he had never had any contact with her.
Han Yi beside him looked left and right but still could not tell because of whom Yu Jing had stayed. He pressed Yu Jing, “Boy, tell me the truth. Is there some girl here you’ve taken a fancy to?”
Yu Jing shook his head. “Your mind has nothing but girls in it.”
“No? Really?” Han Yi did not quite believe it. If there was no girl he liked, why sit amid a pile of women?
Because men had joined, the girls who had already drawn earlier felt a little regretful. They silently complained that their turn had not come later, so they could show off their poetry in front of these young masters.
If they could gain praise from the young prince or Heir Han… ah…
After that, several more young ladies went to draw slips. Most of their lines were plain but passable, and still no one was punished with wine.
Although it looked about the same as before, Wu Sheyue, observing coldly, could tell that many of the young ladies had already turned this game into a performance.
From rising to draw lots, to publicly displaying the prompt, to composing, to returning to their seats… almost every movement was graceful and deliberately artificial. Watching them made Wu Sheyue’s embarrassment flare up.
She shook her head and sighed inwardly. Were these women serious? They lost control like this just because they saw good-looking faces. Besides, what was so great about a good face? Give her two brushes, and she could turn an ugly man into a handsome one. She did not understand these women.
A few turns later, it was Zhao Mo’er’s turn.
Compared to the previous girls, Zhao Mo’er’s manners were poised and natural. She went forward and drew the character “feather.”
Zhao Mo’er pondered briefly and recited a line. As soon as she spoke, praise and discussion rose below. If Zhao Mo’er had not looked toward the group of men before sitting back down, Wu Sheyue would have wanted to give her full marks.
After Zhao Mo’er came Wu Jinghua. Because Zhao Mo’er had received applause, Wu Jinghua’s nervous heart pounded. The person she most admired was here, so she absolutely could not make a mistake.
Wu Jinghua rose and went forward. After choosing carefully, she picked a paper slip. When she unfolded it, her face grew even redder.
“It… it is the character ‘love.'”
The women teased her, and the men laughed as well.
This made Wu Jinghua lower her head and look at her toes in embarrassment. “You’re all terrible. Who wrote this character?”
Zhao Mo’er said from the side, “That was me. You proposed the game yourself, Jinghua. Don’t try to cheat. You have to compose something.”
“All right…” Wu Jinghua thought for a moment and said seriously, “Then… ‘Love divides into two distant places; one person sorrows alone.’ How is that?”
As soon as she finished, before anyone else could respond, Zhao Mo’er began clapping, and many of the young ladies below followed, politely praising a few lines.
Wu Jinghua set the slip down and smiled shyly. She secretly glanced at Yu Jing, only to find Yu Jing looking elsewhere. Wu Jinghua felt a little disappointed, but not too badly.
She placed the paper slip down and naturally looked at what Wu Sheyue was doing before returning to her seat.
At that glance, she discovered that Wu Sheyue was staring off somewhere in a daze. Following Wu Sheyue’s gaze, she found that Wu Sheyue had been staring at the direction of the young prince and Heir Han all along.
Wu Jinghua’s heart sank. She immediately felt as if something of hers were being coveted by another person. Her brows knit together, and she said sourly, “Third Sister, don’t just keep sitting there. Come draw one too.”
Wu Jinghua could no longer wait to make Wu Sheyue embarrass herself. She had originally hoped that all the noble young ladies would learn Wu Sheyue was an ignorant shrew, and now not only were many noble young ladies here, even the young heir and young prince, along with other noble sons, had arrived. Heaven itself was helping her.
With so many noble people present, if Wu Sheyue could not compose a poem, rumors would surely spread outside again that Wu Sheyue’s mind had never recovered. She had not expected a person like Wu Sheyue to dare covet the young prince. She simply had no self-awareness. If today could make Wu Sheyue unable to marry, that would be perfect.
“You mean me?” Wu Sheyue had been glaring fiercely at Yu Jing. Suddenly being called by Wu Jinghua, she felt somewhat baffled. There were clearly still several people before her. Why jump to her now?
Wu Jinghua put on a sweet smile. “Come. Why don’t I help Third Sister draw one?”
“No need.” Wu Sheyue flatly refused, in a bad mood.
In the distance, Yu Jing watched Wu Sheyue with interest and smiled. So this little girl had actually said she was not Third Miss. She was truly good at lying.
