I Married a Sick Husband Vol. 3 Chapter 61

Author: Ann

“However, since the matter at hand is serious, there is no harm in being more cautious.”

Finally, the next few words that came out of Fabian’s mouth confused everyone.

“Coincidentally, I’m also allergic to peaches, so I’ll try this cake before His Majesty.”

“Fabian!”

Almost at the same time, Blair’s menacing screams echoed in the silence.

“Why would you even do that?!”

“Mother, this is an important matter related to His Majesty’s health.”

“You’re allergic to peaches, but you want to eat a cake that you suspect contains peaches?”

“If something were to happen, wouldn’t it be better for it to happen to me than to His Majesty, the Sun?”

“Fabian, I will never…!”

But before Blair could stop him, Fabian quickly stuffed a piece of the cake into his mouth.

Blair, who watched his actions, stumbled as if she would fall down at any moment.

And Meredith couldn’t hide her astonished expression as much as Blair.

There must be peaches in that cake.

From the beginning, Meredith’s plan was to lie to Catarina that Theodore was allergic to peaches, then wait for Catarina to make up her own story.

To overturn her own negative reputation, she would definitely reveal the truth about the cake containing peaches.

Of course, she would never say that it was her own doing.

Anyway, even if that happened, Theodore, who was actually not allergic to peaches, would be fine.

It was confirmed in advance that other guests also did not have any allergy to peaches.

Although peach allergy was not a common occurrence, it was still better to stay prepared for any possible accidents.

There was just one exception.

‘She had clearly told that he wasn’t allergic to peaches.’

Meredith looked at Blair with a confused look on her face.

‘Did the Empress Dowager lie to me?’

‘Why on earth would she do that?’

Meredith couldn’t understand.

But currently, her priority was to solve the current situation without a problem rather than saving her own embarrassment.

If Prince Fabian eats the cake and develops an allergic reaction, everything would proceed just as Catarina wanted.

At that moment, Meredith realized why Fabian had chosen to come forward.

‘Why did Blair lie to me?’

‘It was a carefully devised plan to get me into trouble.’

Only then did she feel like all the clues were solved.

But something even more embarrassing happened next.

“Look at this— I’m completely fine.”

Fabian did not show any symptoms like difficulty in breathing or hives which were the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

He didn’t even seem to exhibit the most common symptom— sneezing.

He appeared too fine.

Everything was exactly the same as it was before he ate the cake.

It was somewhat obvious that nothing would change no matter how long they waited for an allergic reaction to appear.

Meredith found herself even more confused by the situation.

‘… What on earth is happening?’

But instead of answering the question running in her mind, Fabian just smiled gracefully and shrugged his shoulders.

“I’m sure there are no peaches in this cake, Your Majesty. I think you can eat Her Majesty’s gift with peace of mind.”

“That’s a good thing. But there’s something strange.”

Theodore turned his head towards Catarina with an expression that did not show the slightest surprise.

“Princess Schwartz, how did you know that I was allergic to peaches?”

“… yes?”

“The fact that I suffer from peach allergy is a top secret that only my close associates and the Empress know.”

“…..”

“I’m very curious as to how you seem to know about it.”

“Well, that…”

“From whom did you hear it?”

Theodore had been exerting pressure on Catarina.

But she couldn’t tell the truth.

If she did that, then she would end up being buried in the social circles with the stigma of having leaked the conversations of her superiors as the Empress Dowager’s maid.

As a result, Catarina was unable to utter a single word and only kept her lips moving.

At that moment,  when everyone’s eyes were focused on Catarina:

“… Your majesty.”

Meredith opened her mouth with a serious expression.

“Please forgive me.”

‘If you won’t say it, then I have no choice but to say it, Catarina.’

“I believe it was my fault.”

“What do you mean, Empress?”

“Actually, not long ago, I visited Her Highness, the Empress Dowager to give my morning greetings, I had told her of Your Majesty’s condition.”

“What do you mean?”

Theodore asked once again with a surprised face.

“No way now… Are you saying that Princess Schwartz eavesdropped on the conversation between you and Her Highness, the Empress Dowager?”

“… I apologize.”

“No, Your Majesty. I wasn’t eavesdropping!”

Catarina, surprised by the misinformation, hurriedly countered.

“As I was attending to the two of you just now, I simply recollected what Her Majesty the Empress had told Her Highness, the Empress Dowager.”

“Then, did the Princess just carelessly reveal the conversation between her superiors?”

Theodore scolded with an angry expression.

“How could this happen! Your Highness, the Empress Dowager, is this true?”

Out of nowhere, a spark flew towards Blair.

Blair, who was not paying any attention to the unfolding situation because of her extreme worry over her son’s health, opened her mouth with a puzzled look on her face.

“… I think it was so.”

“Ha, have you ever seen something like this happen before?”

Theodore sighed, becoming angry.

“I am very disappointed, Princess Schwartz. I was aware of the ill feelings harboured by the Princess towards the Empress, however still, daring to reveal the conversation of Her Highness the Empress Dowager with her subjects in a place like this?! You don’t realize how big of a mistake this is, do you?”

“Your Majesty, strictly speaking, this is not a leak…”

“Then why did you suddenly bring up a story about peaches that wasn’t even mentioned?”

“….”

“I think it’s suspicious that the story about peaches came out of nowhere.”

Theodore urged Catarina without giving her time to make excuses.

“I almost heard there were peaches in this cake…”

“….”

“It couldn’t be that…”

Theodore asked with a shocked face.

“The Princess couldn’t have set up this whole fiasco, am I right?”

“No, Your Majesty! Definitely not!”

If this continued, she would most certainly end up being dragged to the guillotine for blaspheming the Empress!

Catarina hastened to assert her innocence.

“That is absolutely not the case. It’s just that I… I have a much better sense of smell than others. I think I smelled peach by chance.”

It was a lame excuse no matter who heard it.

The nobles who were listening clicked their tongues with an expression of bewilderment.

But for now, it was Catarina’s most desperate excuse.

“Also, if I had planned this whole incident, then there would have been peaches in the cake! If that was the case then, why would Prince Fabian be safe even after eating the cake?”

“… That’s true, though.”

Theodore narrowed his eyes and took a step back.

They had reached the end of the story that Meredith discussed with him.

“Even so, I cannot hide my disappointment over this incident. I can’t shake the feeling that the Princess framed the Empress for no reason.”

“I’m just worried about His Majesty…”

“How is it possible that the Empress doesn’t even know the ingredients that went into the cake arranged by her for my birthday?”

Catherine was so intimidated by Theodore’s words that she could not say anything more.

The friendly atmosphere had long since become cold.

Meredith watched the situation for a moment and then opened her mouth.

“Your Majesty, it’s a nice day. Please calm down. I am concerned that your health may be damaged by excessive anger.”

“But the current situation is quite scandalous, isn’t it?”

Theodore still showed some discomfort with a less angry expression on his face.

“Why on earth did Princess Schwartz make the situation turn out in this manner? I really can’t figure out her intention.”

“If she had remembered what I said to Her Highness, the Empress Dowager, she would have been worried. She also said that she has a keen sense of smell.”

Her words about Catarina’s absurd excuse were undoubtebly sarcastic

Catarina winced and bit her lower lip.

“Anyway, the matter has been safely resolved without anyone getting hurt, so let’s not worry too much and just enjoy the banquet.”

“… Sure.”

“Everyone, please raise your glass to make a toast to wish for good health to His Majesty.”

Meredith raised her glass first, and the others followed suit.

“Cheers to His Majesty and Valtejain.”

“Cheers!”

People clinked their glasses together in harmony with Meredith’s toast.

Meredith smiled gracefully and looked down at Catarina, who was trembling with contempt, not even thinking about raising her glass.

‘… It’s over for you now, Catarina.’

Catarina’s position in social circles would now be irreparably reduced.

The Schwartz family was falling further and further into the abyss.
