“…Princess?”

Ellie’s face had gone so pale it looked alarming.

Her body trembled hard.

“Luden oppa…, oppa….”

She wanted to see Luden oppa.

This place was scary.

She didn’t like it.

She wanted to hurry back to her brother’s little cabin in the forest.

“Oppaa….”

A tear rolled down Ellie’s cheek as her voice shook.

Once the first tear fell, it carved a path down her face.

Then two, three more tears followed, running along that same path.

“Uuuh, hhh….”

“P-Princess?!”

Lombaton called out in a panic.

But it was already too late.

“Uwaaaahhhhhh!”

Ellie burst into a grand, loud cry.

“W-wait, why all of a sudden…? Did I do something wrong? Please stop for a moment, let’s talk calmly….”

All he had done was ask questions as they were.

It seemed like she had a tiny mix-up in her memory, so he lightly pointed it out—yet she was crying like his youngest students.

Lombaton, who possessed more knowledge than anyone in the world, didn’t understand such tiny social things.

“Your Highness! What happened?!”

Hearing Ellie’s crying from outside, Rilkiea rushed in.

Madam Laval also hurried over and quickly swept Ellie into her arms.

“The great scholar bullied her!”

Madam Laval accused him in Ellie’s place.

Rilkiea glared at Lombaton with eyes sharp like axes.

“N-no! I merely stated the facts!”

“You destroyed Her Highness’s dreams and fantasies!”

“Is that a crime?!”

“It is!”

Madam Laval delivered the verdict with unwavering firmness.

Lombaton: guilty.

Rilkiea, faithfully following Madam Laval’s judgment, became the executioner.

Even the great scholar of the Academy had no exception.

“Please leave!”

Rilkia dragged Lombaton out roughly.

Lombaton didn’t resist and let himself be pulled away obediently.

Either way, continuing today’s test was impossible now.

“Oppaaaa! Uwaaahhh!”

Once Ellie’s tears burst out, they did not stop. No, they couldn’t stop.

The funeral of the late king and queen had been the funeral of her real mom and dad, and her brother… was only a fantasy from a dream.

It was far too overwhelming for Ellie to handle.

“No, nooo! Oppa is real! Oppaaa!”

Oppa, please come get me. Ellie is crying so hard like this.

Ellie cried and cried until her brother came.

But no matter how long she cried, oppa did not come.

“What should we do….”

Madam Laval asked Marquis Simon while sobbing uncontrollably.

Marquis Simon had other official duties. But because he had been busy looking after Ellie, he hadn’t been able to do much of his original work. Recently, he managed to handle some tasks only because Ellie was surrounded by her teachers.

Then he rushed over after receiving Madam Laval’s urgent message.

The message was: “The princess won’t stop crying.”

Marquis Simon, who could practically qualify for the royal guard based on the speed he ran, arrived only to see Ellie crying her heart out. His eyes almost popped out of his head.

“What did that teacher do! What kind of ill-mannered thing did that supposedly educated man do!”

“He bullied Her Highness! He told Her Highness she doesn’t have an older brother!”

“…? But she doesn’t.”

“UWAAAAAH! OPPAAAAAA!”

Ellie flipped over again at Marquis Simon’s thoughtless comment.

She slid right off Madam Laval’s arms and ended up lying flat on the floor in her tears.

“Oh my, no! Princess! You can’t cry on the floor! No, no! Cry in my arms!”

“Oppaaaaaa! Uheeheee!”

Ellie was beyond caring anymore.

“Did that teacher tease her by saying she has no brother?”

“No, nothing like that…, but he firmly insisted she doesn’t have one!”

“……??”

Even hearing it again, he still didn’t understand what was happening.

“Then did the princess actually have a brother?”

“That’s uh…, no! She does!”

“She does?!”

“If the princess says she does, then she does!”

Madam Laval wasn’t thinking straight anymore either.

“I want oppa! Oppaaaa!”

Madam Laval looked desperately at Marquis Simon.

Right now, the only thing that could stop the princess’s tears was this “fantasy brother.”

‘What do you expect me to do?’

Marquis Simon asked with his expression. Even his face now showed panic.

Madam Laval mouthed the words while crying:

‘Just make one!’

“???”

How did that make any sense?!

But sense or not, he had to do something.

Marquis Simon hesitated for a moment.

Maybe he could say, “Your brother will be here soon!” and stall for time?

No, that would only delay things. And when the truth came out later, she would cry even harder—this time with betrayal mixed in.

Should he say, “I am your brother!”?

…No. On a human level, that felt criminal.

‘Hm?’

Then something flashed through Marquis Simon’s mind—a real oppa.

Not by blood, but a close acquaintance, and older by at least a year—wouldn’t that count as oppa?

“Your Highness! Please wait just a moment! I will go bring your brother!”

“H-heuheu… huh?”

Even in the middle of crying, Ellie froze at those words.

Madam Laval sighed in immense relief, fearing Ellie might actually stop breathing from crying so hard.

But now came the real problem:

Where, and what brother?

Even if she told him to “make one,” bringing a mud doll or a teddy bear and calling it her brother would only backfire.

Their princess was crying very seriously right now.

“He will be a brother you’ll be satisfied with!”

Marquis Simon declared firmly and hurried out of the room.

“Hic….”

Marquis Simon said he would go bring her brother, but Ellie knew very well that he couldn’t do that.

Her brother belonged to another world.

If Marquis Simon could bring him just like that, Luden oppa would have come to her first.

He was only acting to comfort her.

Which meant… she was back to square one.

“I-I don’t have anyone…. Hic….”

The tears that had barely begun to calm suddenly burst again.

Madam Laval sighed deeply and held Ellie tightly in her arms.

“Why would you say you have no one, Princess.”

“Mom and dad are dead…, and oppa isn’t real, so I’m alone.”

“You have me right here, Princess.”

Madam Laval spoke softly while patting Ellie’s back.

Ellie couldn’t deny that.

Madam Laval had been by Princess Ellia’s side until the moment she was kicked out of the palace. Literally every moment of her life.

She may have been a nanny, but a person can’t sacrifice their entire life so completely.

People have their own families to look after, things they want to do, and time they need to rest.

But Madam Laval had been with Princess Ellia from the moment she woke up to the moment she fell asleep—and even afterward, always near her.

When Ellie was just reading books, she didn’t think much of it. But after becoming Princess Ellia herself, she realized how strange it was.

“Madam Laval… why are you always with me?”

Madam Laval looked down at Ellie with a small smile.

Then she wiped Ellie’s tear- and snot-covered face with her hand—without a trace of disgust.

‘…Ah.’

Ellie could feel that the look in Madam Laval’s eyes was real.

Eyes filled with affection, pouring all of it into Ellie.

Madam Laval wasn’t caring for her to get something in return.

Her eyes were like Luden oppa’s.

“I don’t have anyone either, Princess. You are the only one I have.”

“Madam Laval…, you don’t have a family?”

Princess Ellia had never once asked such a thing despite living with her for years.

Even though she was the closest person to her.

“Yes, my parents passed away when I was young, and I had no siblings, so I spent a long time alone. I did have relatives, but… hm… they were more interested in taking my parents’ inheritance than taking care of me.”

Madam Laval gave a bitter smile and continued quietly.

It was an old memory, so she didn’t choke up anymore. But like tasting a food that has been chewed too long, there was still bitterness in her mouth.

“Then through an introduction, I met my husband and got married. But both my husband and my baby fell ill and died at the same time.”

“Oh…!”

Ellie looked up at Madam Laval in shock.

Madam Laval had also lost her whole family all at once.

Ellie’s heart ached.

Seeing Ellie’s surprised face, Madam Laval smiled back gently.

“At that time, my baby wasn’t even a hundred days old yet…. Around then, Your Highness was born. I didn’t even know that. But one day someone from the palace came and asked if I would become your wet nurse.”

“A wet nurse?”

A wet nurse and a nanny were different.

A wet nurse fed the baby milk; a nanny took care of them.

Wet nurses were usually commoners who had recently given birth, while nannies were noblewomen.

But Madam Laval, though a nanny, had directly breastfed Princess Ellia. Ellie remembered Luden oppa saying that part was strange.

“Yes. The woman originally meant to do it gave birth to twins, so she suddenly couldn’t. They were desperately looking for a wet nurse, and somehow they heard about me. So I entered the palace… and then I saw you. You were so beautiful.”

“……”

“In that moment, I decided. I would devote my life to you. So I offered to become your nanny as well.”
