Ah, Lady Luize. Please rest. It’s almost over now. I’ll somehow manage… to take care of this… I’ll give it a try…” Robin mumbled as he tried to put the statue back in its place with a pale face. The cleanly severed section was never going to be reattached.

“…”

Aiven glanced at Robin with a worried expression, then nodded towards Luize. Luize gave a small smile and collapsed onto the ground.

[God doesn’t answer the wrong questions.]

Just before her vision went dark, the inscription on the statue’s pedestal caught her eye.

* * *

What unfolded before her eyes was a scene from the distant past.

White Dragon Ron, known as the one closest to god, could hear the voice of the divine. Ron asked the Supreme God. “I cannot leave that child alone. Is there no way I can continue living with Run?”

God didn’t always answer his questions. Even though Ron had asked this question thousands upon thousands of times, they had never once responded. He interpreted the god’s silence as a denial. If not, why else would the deity refuse to answer?

Magic, like divine power, was a gift bestowed by the god to both humans and dragons. In other words, it meant that no ordinary magic could defy the will of the god. Even a dragon of immense power was no exception to this.

As death approached, Ron’s heart grew colder and more resigned. He had no intention of leaving his beloved behind, no matter what. While calming the anxious Run, Ron organized his plan in his mind.

There were three conditions for his plan. First, the power of the god.

“Supreme God, I will save a million lives for you. When that time comes, please grant me a part of your power.”

When Ron presented his condition, the god finally gave him a short answer: “So be it.”

Ron became the first pope, established the temple, and set the laws. Then, he created a secluded place and gathered those with divine power to prepare a space to meet the god. Using all his abilities, he began to save lives.

“Thank you for saving me. I also wish to follow Lord Ron and heal people! Though I am but a humble being without divine power, if you teach me how, I will live so as not to bring disgrace upon your great deeds for generations to come!”

“Your name is Servenia, correct?”

“Yes!”

“Very well, I will teach you the healing arts I possess.”

To save a million lives, Ron taught humans how to heal themselves. The lives saved using the healing arts he taught were also counted among those he had saved, allowing him to reach the number of a million quickly. As a result, Ron was naturally able to draw closer to numerous beings, including humans. The pure white and benevolent dragon—humans began to think of White Dragon Ron in this way.

“It’s time to prepare the vessel.”

Second, the vessel. If death and parting were inevitable, then they could simply be reborn and meet again. However, if he was born in just any body, Run might not recognize him. He needed a vessel that carried his bloodline yet stood out from others of the same generation.

Creating such a vessel was not difficult for him. The number of humans who desired to serve under him was as numerous as the followers of the temple.

“You wish to become my servant?”

“Yes.”

Among them, Lindeman of the North was intelligent and highly loyal. As Northerners, they had an excellent physique, and all these strengths would positively affect the continuation of his bloodline for many generations.

“The moment you wear this, you will be under my command. It means your life will no longer be your own.”

“I will consider it an honor.”

Lindeman wore the accessory that Ron handed him, a bracelet embedded with Ron’s magical stone.

“Your descendants will live comfortably in a prosperous territory for generations. However, if there comes a time when there is only one daughter left in your line, ensure that she forms a bond with the imperial family.”

“Yes.”

Thus, Ron had Lindeman’s bloodline carry his mana by placing the accessory on the first Lindeman. He cast a spell so that when the imperial blood and Lindeman’s bloodline merged, a part of his power would be activated.

“The trace of my power will remain in this blood. If it’s Run, she will surely recognize me.”

And the last, third condition remained.

“My child, for what reason have you called me?”

A part of the god descended into the most secretive space of the temple, the prayer room. Gentle light shimmered around the god. God sat on a statue and looked down at Ron.

Ron’s lips curled into a smile. “Supreme God knows all things, correct?”

“Indeed.”

“You must also know that I have touched forbidden power.”

“That is so.” The god looked at Ron with an expression of interest.

“I have dared to defy the natural order to borrow the power of the gods. The binding and severing of ties are within the domain of the divine. I intend to bind my soul to Run’s so that we may meet again.”

“You were certain that I would not lend you my power?”

“From the moment you refused to answer my question, I abandoned that hope. So I intend to forge my own path.”

Ron raised his hand and snapped his fingers. At that moment, his pure white hair turned black. Simultaneously, a magic circle made of blood appeared where a part of the god had been sitting. And that very third condition was black magic.

“Black magic requires a price. Even if you use part of my power to bind your fate, you will have to pay a corresponding price before you can meet again.”

The light faded from the part of the god. Losing its halo, the god, now appearing as an ordinary human, descended from the statue and approached Ron.

“Are you prepared to accept it?”

“Yes.”

Now, all that remained was to return and inform Run. To tell her what he had prepared for her. How they could reunite after his death…

“…Ah.”

But he hadn’t even taken many steps before he fell to his knees.

“The price you paid takes effect the moment the magic begins.”

“…”

“For a long time before your reunion after reincarnation, you have wagered your misfortune. It is a choice fitting of you, my child.”

With only a short time left to live, it wouldn’t have been strange for him to die at any moment. Still, he knew exactly when his death would come. There were still three days left until his death. Yet, his body was already failing to move.

“You will die without being able to inform Run of the news of your reunion.”

“…”

Unable to respond, Ron barely managed to move himself to his territory. He then collapsed in the middle of his domain.

“Ron, what’s wrong? Ron! You said there was still time left. Where have you been? Why is your body like this?”

Run, who found him, held his dying body and cried until he drew his last breath.

But we will meet again. Just as we wished. And so, he closed his eyes.

God does not answer the wrong questions.

“I cannot leave that child alone. Is there no way I can continue living with Run?”

That was the wrong question. Run would not be left alone. The moment Ron died, she would choose death as well.

* * *

Run traced Ron’s vanished traces. But dragons left no corpses, and after he disappeared, so did his domain.

“…Ron, where are you? You wouldn’t have left me behind and just gone away.”

Unable to properly bid farewell, Run wandered the world, having lost her mate. It was one day at the end of the first spring after Ron had left. As she wandered aimlessly through the empire’s streets, she came across a red petal on the ground.

Gathering her scattered thoughts, she caught the scent of Ron. Run lifted her head and looked around with wide eyes. The world was filled with flowers that resembled his heart. His scent was everywhere in the air, yet he was nowhere to be found.

For the first time in five thousand years, Run felt fear before the immense vortex of time that stretched out before her. The flowers he left behind, claiming they were in place of himself, only intensified the reality and longing that she would never see him again.

“You said it yourself. Dragons are the most beloved souls of the gods and are reborn in the mortal realm as demigods. But, this is a curse. I do not wish to be left alone, Ron.”

Run tried to take her own life but found it impossible for a dragon. Dragons could not die by their own hand. In the end, she decided that she would have a human, whom Ron had cherished so much, kill her. Only they could end her life.

She burned their crops and destroyed their buildings to provoke them. She focused on destroying their livelihood, though she tried to avoid causing casualties. But there were still victims.

“The nobles must have it good. They don’t have to live like this. In my next life, I want to live comfortably too.”

“At least you’re getting married soon. I heard your future wife is quite capable.”

“She is, indeed.”

“Lucky you. I’m not sure if I’ll ever get married. I don’t have anyone who gives me that kind of certainty. I might just end up wandering for the rest of my life and then die alone.”

“You think I will get married for certainty? Just do it. Anyway, I’d better get back to work.”

“Wasn’t today supposed to be your day off?”

“Do you think weddings happen for free?”

A worker with golden hair and blue eyes was setting up a wooden pillar when he looked up at the black shadow that covered him. At that moment, Run’s eyes met with the worker’s blue eyes. But she had already unleashed her breath.
