Deciding that there was no sign of White Slys in the mountains to the northwest, they returned to the center. Another day had already passed.

They went straight to the director’s office, where Zhaolin was still there for overtime. Ryu Won reported the events in the northwest mountains one by one.

She listened with a blank face, her mood darkening as time went on. She seemed to feel sorry for the twisted situation.

“In the end, Jung Jaeho is a spy, and the White Slys is the material to complete the experiment. And we missed it all. Do I understand you correctly?”

“Roughly.”

“Ha.”

She felt the weight of responsibility in that short sigh. In fact, to turn the whole situation on its head, the White Slys had to be saved. Yeon-young pursed her lips and looked at the ground.

A tide of self-pity washed over her like a tidal wave.

Zhaolin tapped her index finger on the desk a couple of times to lighten the heavy mood.

Yeon-young’s gaze met Zhaolin’s blazing eyes.

“There has to be a way, right? It’s not like we’ve missed everything, after all.”

Zhaolin leaned down and tucked her upper body under the desk, and something leaped out of the desk, startling her.

She stumbled back in surprise. Luckily, no one was hurt, thanks to Ryu Won’s wind blocking the object.

“Ming!”

“Ah…, uhhh!”

Yeon-young let out a strange groan from how startled she was. A white Sly stood in front of her, radiating light.

Ryu Won’s eyebrows also curled slightly at the appearance of the mysterious creature. The white Sly skillfully dodged past Zhaolin and Ryu Won and clung to Yeon-young’s leg.

She remembered the moment when she had shaken off Jaeho’s energy and teleported one of the White Sly into her teleportation.

“Take charge and take care of it. That’s an order.”

“Me?”

“It can’t be merged with the existing Slys, and the white sly doesn’t like anyone but you, as you can see, so we can’t just leave it there, especially when it might be the most important key to finding the White Slys.”

“You’re right.”

“So take it with you for the time being.”

Yeon-young carefully lifted Sly from her leg. Ryu Won looked down at the Sly and frowned slightly. The Sly must have felt the momentum, because it burrowed deeper into Yeon-young’s arms, and the lines between Ryu Won’s brows deepened.

“Now I have to be jealous of a Sly, why did you give it your arms?”

“Mr. Ryu Won, they’re just like babies. They’re purer souls than the Sly in the field.”

“We should never have children. I don’t want to share Ms. Yeon-young.”

“Do me a favor and take your lovemaking outside.”

Ti-ling-

Just then, their communicators rang at the same time. When they checked, it was from Veronica.

She is asking them to help her with the restoration work of Branch 1.

As Yeon-young scanned the summary, she naturally looked over at Zhaolin.

“We had a meeting while you two were gone, and the bottom line is that we’re going to continue as before, focusing all our power on Branch 1 and preparing for the next attack.”

“Aha. So the recovery operation is ahead of schedule?”

“Yes. With the loss of Sly, the next one will be an all-out war, no matter how you slice it, so we need to be ready for it.”

There was no arguing with Zhaolin’s clear explanation. Yeon-young nodded slightly in agreement. Zhaolin slowly rose from her seat and gathered her uniform coat.

“You go ahead. I’ll catch up with you after I deliver the files.”

“Alright, we’ll go first.”

Zhaolin teleported away, and Yeon-young stared at the spot where the light had disappeared. Quickly regaining her composure, she opened the teleportation via her bracelet.

But Ryu Won reached out and turned off the teleport she had created. When she looked at him in confusion, he smiled slightly and said,

“Shall we take a short walk to our village?”

For some reason, hearing the suggestion made her breathe easier, and he extended his hand as if he understood how she felt. Perhaps he was feeling the same way.

“Okay.”

Yeon-young took Ryu Won’s hand as if drawn by a magnet. She liked the familiar, warm sensation of his hand squeezing hers tightly. A smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. Ryu Won watched her smile long enough to imprint it on his heart.

They left the center via the road less traveled and headed for the village. After everything they’d been through, this small request was a welcome relief.

Of course, it’s not trivial at all, since it’s about preparing for war.

As they got further and further away from the center, the view of the village began to become clearer and clearer. As she headed toward it, Yeon-young tried to organize everything that had happened so far in her head.

For example, she thought about what she should prioritize in the future.

Of course, Ryu Won pointed out that she was only halfway there, but she decided not to be impatient.

The more urgent the better.

‘Should I spend the rest of the time practicing my abilities?’

The immediate problem was the exponentially growing number of Snarls and Negroes using Corrupted Souls. With the White Sly taken away, the only way to get the Snarls back to normal was to…

Yeon-young was conscious of Ryu Won’s hand. In addition to being able to read memories, she had found a new ability. Slow and feeble, but she was definitely able to purify the Snarl.

She wondered what difference this ability would make in the future.

‘If I use the purification ability, Snarl can become like a normal soul, but if I think about it the other way around…’

Yeon-young turned her head and sneaked a glance at Ryu Won’s side. As the sun shone on his face, his transparent skin glistened like white sand. The sun was strong, and every time he squinted, the small mole under his right eye disappeared, making him feel regretful.

Tanato’s light didn’t make him stand out, but his presence made him look radiant and beautiful.

His eyes curved into half moons as if he felt Yeon-young’s gaze. Feeling the warmth of winter in his eyes, she wished she could protect that smile.

She wanted to stop him from becoming a snarl with all her might.

“Mr. Ryu Won.”

“Yes, Ms. Yeon-young.”

“We should stay together for a long time, don’t lose each other, and this time I’ll protect you.”

“That’s what I do best, chasing after you even after death.”

Ryu Won’s boastfulness made Yeon-young laugh out loud. When he spoke, he sounded even more convincing.

“My purification powers are starting to return.”

“…As you search for your memories, you’re also regaining your inherent abilities. I knew you’d find them someday.”

“And you believe me?”

Yan Ying narrowed her eyes and stared at him intently. Ryu Won rolled his eyes, his eyes as clear as the first snow, and averted his gaze. Then he spoke in a quiet voice.

“Because, as usual, I can’t trust anything other than you.”

“Never mind, I need to practice my abilities more, they’re too weak right now.”

“It’s good to try it out, but it’s definitely…overwhelming.”

“That’s right, the best way to improve your skills is to face off against Snarl.”

“Let’s think about it some more and get back to it.”

As they walked down the road talking, they came to a village. At the entrance to the village, Yeon-Young stopped in her tracks.

The quaint little town had long since been destroyed by the Snarl’s attack. About half of the town’s buildings were shapeless and crumbling, giving the place an untidy, dingy atmosphere.

“The situation is similar to the Center.”

“It wasn’t just the center that was attacked.”

“Have all the town spirits evacuated?”

“They’re all at their posts, probably grinding their teeth.”

“Aha. That makes sense, because I’m sure there are many souls who lost their companions like we did…”

Many souls were extinguished or dragged away by the Snarl invasion. Who would have thought that they would have to face another death in Tanato. Yeon-young sighed with a heavy heart.

They walked to Veronica’s tavern. Luckily, Veronica’s building seemed to have survived the melee.

Spotting Yeon-young, Veronica waved her hands in the air to welcome them. Marie came running over to her, happy to see her. She patted Marie’s head a few times and headed back to her seat.

“Huh?”

“Hey.”

Yeon-young stopped in her tracks when she saw an unexpected figure sitting in front of the bartender.
