Ryu Won agreed with Yeon-young’s conclusion, adding that it made sense, and sent it straight to Zhaolin. After hearing the outline, Zhaolin smiled with satisfaction; it seemed to her to be a logical conclusion.

She added that she would investigate the grounds of Branch 1, and that she would schedule a meeting of the phantom as soon as possible.

Just as she turned off her comms with Zhaolin, Veronica appeared, just in time.

Veronica shook her head as she looked around the plaza, which was even more of a mess than before.

“…What happened here?”

“There was a problem, but it was resolved. We rescued a phantom.”

“Oh.”

Veronica’s eyes widened in surprise as she looked at the man standing in front of the clock tower with a dazed face. Looking around, Ryu Won quickly summarized the situation.

“Ahn Ji Hua will take him back to the center, and the rest of us will help with the recovery.”

As he organized, Yeon-young turned to look at Ji Hua. Her face had paled drastically due to her poor condition and the use of her abilities. Veronica furrowed her brow and looked at Ji Hua as well.

“That’s a good idea. Can we take her and head to the shelter first?”

“I have one more investigation to do, and I’m only going to the lobby after I give Zhaolin a hard time. You go straight to work.”

“Okay, I’m out of here. Take care of yourself.”

With a quick goodbye, Ji Hua disappeared into the teleport. Meanwhile, Veronica, who had been briefed on the situation, was troubled.

Yeon-young hugged the white sly clinging tightly to her ankle. The square was as silent as the night when everyone was asleep.

“Is there any point in building a fortress now?”

“Hmm?”

“Isn’t that right? From what you’ve told me, the enemy is inside, not outside?”

“Yes, because they are more likely to be spread out under the ground and concentrated under the first level.”

“Yeah, but building a wall isn’t going to stop them, they’re already in, you might as well stop what you’re doing…”

It was a conclusion that came from a seasoned phantom. Clearly, she was right. Building a wall around the perimeter and closing the gap was a poor strategy.

Veronica rubbed her forehead with her hand, wondering if she should change her route. Yeon-young, who had been listening to the conversation, chimed in.

“We still need to do a little more research, but if Negro has taken up residence under the ground and the burrow is a vital link… I think it’s better to find it and stop it first, though I don’t know how much.”

Veronica clapped her hands as if realizing something. Ryu Won and Yeon-young’s gazes quickly focused on her.

“She’s right, we shouldn’t be building walls, we should be sealing off the burrows!”

“How are we going to find the den? It’s going to be cleverly hidden, like under this clock tower.”

Finding Negro’s den would require someone who could at least read Snarl’s aura.

Given that Zhaolin had to stay at center and Ji Hua wasn’t feeling well, only Ryu Won and Yeon-young were left on special teams. It was a ridiculously small number to find and block every burrow.

Yeon-young looked at her with worry in her eyes. Veronica flicked her sweaty hair back and smiled lazily. Seeing that smile made her feel like her troubles were about to disappear.

“Yeon-young, don’t worry too much.”

“I’ll do my best to find a den, but there are only so many of us..”

“You’re going to do it all by yourself?”

“Even Ryu Won…”

“Well, there’s us, too. What do the villagers here think? We’re just two busy souls who need to help each other out.”

Veronica’s hands were completely free, and she grabbed Yeon-young’s shoulders and shook them back and forth, as if trying to energize her. Yeon-young felt a little dizzy from the shaking, but she couldn’t help but smile.

She was right. Everything didn’t have to be figured out and resolved within the Special Team, after all, Tanato was home to many souls, not just the Special Team. It felt like a tangled ball of yarn was slowly unraveling.

“Now that the plan has changed, it won’t be possible to implement it right away. We’ll have to get permission from the higher-ups and reassemble the team with available people.”

“We’ll be out of the office for a while, too, so call us when you need us.”

“It’s better if you don’t.”

Ryu Won said in a playful tone, but he meant it. Veronica rolled her eyes at him, then teleported away. Ryu Won and Yeon-young were the only ones left in the plaza that had been filled with spirits.

She stared blankly at the spot where Veronica had disappeared. She checked the time on her bracelet to see if it was too late to return to the center.

“Um…, Ryu Won. What do you think we should do? Should we go back to the center and wait for her?”

“No.”

His eyes, as clear as a blank slate, were looking across the plaza to where the Pillar of Iris stood. He stared at it for a long time without saying a word.

Yeon-young wondered what he was thinking as he watched the faint light emanating from the pillar.

She gave him time to collect his thoughts. When he finally turned his attention to her, he gave her the faintest of smiles.

“I think I’ll call it a night.”

“You’re going straight home, right?”

“Yes, to our house.”

Ryu Won said, emphasizing the word “our”.

Coming to a conclusion, they teleported to Ryu Won’s house, him going ahead with his long legs and opening the front door for her. With a slight wrinkle of her nose, Yeon-young thanked Ryu Won and stepped inside.

As soon as she stepped through the front door, the smell of freshly cut grass enveloped her. It was a scent that instantly reminded her of him, and when she smelled it, she felt like she had come home after a very long journey.

“It’s good, he has his body odor in the house.”

“Can you smell it?”

“Yes. I can smell it very well.”

She wondered if he felt as secure as she did.

She gave him a cool glance and headed for the living room. As soon as she walked in the door, like any other office worker, she flopped down on the rug in the living room.

Ryu Won opened the door to the refrigerator in the kitchen and looked inside.

“Aren’t you hungry? You should eat something, don’t you think?”

“I’m fine, Ryu Won, you should eat something too.”

Yeon-young replied in a drained voice, and her eyes slowly closed. She didn’t have the energy to raise her hand. Thinking back, so much had happened. From Saeri’s affair, to Ji Hua’s arrival, to Jung Jaeho. It was no wonder her mind was racing.

She closed her eyes and enjoyed the relaxing energy that came over her. If she let herself fall asleep, she felt like she could sleep without a care in the world.

‘They say the soul can live without sleep… Why am I so tired?’

Maybe she wanted to escape the reality of what had happened.

Just then, she heard quiet footsteps coming from the kitchen to the living room. The sound of the footsteps was enough to show how much Ryu Won cared about Yeon-young.

Yeon-young gave a small smile and consciously pushed the thoughts out of her head.

She wanted to clear her head, if only for a moment.

“Ms. Yeon-young, are you sleeping? I don’t think you’re going to eat yet.”

He called out to her in a lazy, mid-bass voice. She didn’t answer, so he asked again in a quieter voice.

“Are you sure you don’t want to eat? You’re not going to have any more energy after using your powers.”

“…….”

“Are you going to sleep like this? I’m hungry.”

“…….”

“Ms. Yeon-young.”

“…….”

“Ms. Yeon-young, can I kiss you?”

The moment she heard his last question, Yeon-young’s bloodshot eyes fluttered open.

And she sucked in a breath.

Before she knew it, Ryu Won was on top of her, his arms supporting his body on the floor. His eyes, like snow at first, were a mixture of amusement and primal need at the situation.

Ryu Won’s gaze was locked on her lips as he gently brushed his thumb across her full, soft lips. His fingertips threatened to invade the border of her lips, but never crossed it.

She swallowed dryly, unable to turn her head away. He played with his hands, sizing up the atmosphere, then lowered his head very slowly.

As if he wanted to remember this moment for a long time.

Naturally, Yeon-young’s eyes closed. There was no reason for her to reject him now. As their noses touched, nose to nose, their breaths intertwined, someone pushed between them. Yeon-young gasped, pushing Ryu Won away and pulling herself up.

“Ming!”

“Ah…!”

It was none other than the rescued white Sly who had burrowed into their arms. In their frantic rush to get home, they had forgotten about the Sly. The moment the Sly announced his presence and made a sound, Yeon-young felt sick.

Ryu Won stared at her lips, still unable to hide his regret. He tugged on her hand once more, but she refused to part her lips.

“Not in front of a baby, an adult should set an example.”

“I can set an example of a primal human need, don’t you think they should know what they need to know?”

“Shhh. I don’t.”

“All I need is Yeon-young, so from now on, don’t let any other living soul into the house besides us.”

With a grunt, he stood up and circled Yeon-young. The white sly quickly attached itself to Yeon-young’s ankles.

“What are you doing? Where are we going?”

“The second floor.”

Ryu Won didn’t even bat an eyelid as he carried her to her room on the second floor. He laid down next to her and pulled her into his arms, making a rustling sound.

“You said you were hungry. Aren’t you going to eat?”

“Later. You said you didn’t feel like it, so this is how we’re going to spend our time today.”

Yeon-young thought about heading back down to the kitchen, but fatigue washed over her again. With her hands and feet propped up, Yeon-young lay beside him, face to face.

The light from the window shone down on his face, making his eyes seem to glow.

Yeon-young closed her eyes, taking in the picture in her mind.

Wishing this could last forever.
