The Road to Glory Chapter 237 - [Side Story] Chapter 39. And the Story Ahead (END)

Author: Dawn

[Sin Joohyeok: LMAO]

[Sin Joohyeok: No way, no way]

[Sin Joohyeok: Not knowing everything else is fine, but not knowing Gyeowool was a girl is just;;]

He doesn’t know how many times he’s heard this since the broadcast aired.

Since the mural broadcast, complaints have been flying in from everywhere.

Not just Sin Joohyeok, but from Liv to Teacher Hwang Ryongpil, and even his mother and father scolded him about how he couldn’t have known.

Even the members asked if he really didn’t know.

It’s been a while since he felt this stupid.

Besides that, they mostly ask about Gyeowool?

He thinks everyone has asked if she’s really similar to him.

And they say he should sign a contract with her before other labels snatch her away.

[Sin Joohyeok: Well, she might not want to come because she hates you LOL Have you apologized to Gyeowool? LOL]

He doesn’t even know why he’s calling her Gyeowool this and Gyeowool that when he’s never even met her.

[Sin Joohyeok: Is she not answering your calls? No, before that, do they even have telecommunications there?]

[She’s doing well even now]

[Sin Joohyeok: Oh really? What’s Gyeowool up to these days?]

She’s not doing anything special, just chatting.

Gyeowool says these days after school, when her mother finishes work, she writes lyrics. Taking her time, perfecting each line.

Also, when she talks about melodies that come to mind, Halo helps organize them.

And well, when asked to sing, she sings.

Recently, after hearing “The Last DaY” made by Halo and Frau Dwen, Gyeowool begged to be taught yodeling.

Thinking of that, Halo realized he hadn’t answered Sin Joohyeok’s question.

[Watch the broadcast]

[Sin Joohyeok: ?]

[Sin Joohyeok: The broadcast is over, what broadcast are you talking about]

[Sin Joohyeok: Hey]

Whether Sin Joohyeok complained or not, Halo suddenly remembered the words “could be taken away.” He had actually heard those words from Sir Veil.

August Veil, who watched the original broadcast from overseas, showed great interest in Gyeowool. He even made a request(?) to Halo asking if he could see Gyeowool’s sketchbook.

From what he heard, it seemed to have spread quite a bit through NuTube clips or something before the overseas broadcasting rights were sold.

Wise Island Life became known as either ‘Wise settling Life on the island’ or ‘The Documentary He is featured on’,

and as much as the four cast members became known, Gyeowool became known as ‘Winter’.

Gyeowool often informed him that many people were visiting the island. Koreans were the most numerous, followed by Japanese and Chinese visitors, and occasionally people from various other places came too.

The captain only brought as many as wouldn’t disrupt island life.

They quietly tour the island and leave, she said.

They follow the harbor and beach, walk along the mural path to see Baegun Elementary School, look at the now-empty cast members’ lodgings, and climb the mountain following the treasure hunt path to view the island.

And at the very end, they always return to the mural path, walking the path that Gyeowool and her mother walked, following the sheet music that Halo and Gyeowool drew together.

In May, when the broadcast was well underway, Gyeowool was happy that visitors from outside would give her snacks and such.

Halo was relieved until then.

However, the aftermath of Wise Island Life hit the island belatedly.

It was fine when the captain controlled the number of outsiders.

While there weren’t zero rude people, there were village elders, and even outsiders would stop other outsiders from misbehaving.

But when outsiders realized that bringing people to Baegun Island could make money, they started “businesses,” and Baegun Island began to suffer.

Outsiders barging into people’s homes.

Littering, and even excessively approaching Baegun Island residents.

Well, it would be somewhat understandable if it were just adults.

The children were the biggest problem.

Outsiders would enter the school to give gifts to children, try to play with them, and even touch them while calling their names.

They would point fingers from afar like watching animals in a zoo, take pictures, sneak into the school to try to steal Halo’s sketchbook or piano, and after they messed with the broadcasting club’s equipment as they pleased, the village was in an uproar.

And above all.

People’s greatest interest was in the “real prodigy” or “the second Halo.” The attention that had been split with another prodigy living in Seoul focused on Gyeowool.

“Can’t we ban outsiders from entering?”

“The island isn’t working properly anymore.”

Despite complaints to the city and district offices, there wasn’t a strong enough way to stop citizens in a liberal democratic country.

“Or should we send her across the sea to Ara Island…”

“What did Gyeowool do wrong? Why do people have to treat her so badly?”

“And what music can she make staying on the island, Gyeowool’s mother…”

Gyeowool, who used to roam all over the island, stayed at home. She didn’t say anything because she didn’t want to worry her teacher, but the village elders thought this situation couldn’t continue.

“We’ll look for other places too, but let’s send Gyeowool first.”

“Maybe we should contact her teacher once…”

“What does the child say?”

One day, Halo said to Gyeowool.

“Want to come here?”

Gyeowool couldn’t answer.

“You don’t want to?”

“No. That’s not it… but can I do well?”

“At what?”

“I don’t know anything.”

Gyeowool asked worriedly.

She didn’t know anything about Seoul, the children living there, or what she should do. She had never thought about living apart from her mother.

“I don’t know what you’re worried about, but.”

“…”

“I can help.”

Gyeowool’s eyes lit up at Halo’s answer.

It was something she had heard in the classroom before.

“Like we used to do.”

So.

Halo raised the corner of his mouth and asked.

“Do you want to come? Or do you want to stay longer? Do whatever you want. If you want to come, I’ll help you get here.”

“How?”

“Didn’t you say you were curious about what sound an airplane makes?”

Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo.

Instead of an airplane, Gyeowool got to learn what sound a helicopter makes that day.

While agreements with public institutions are progressing well, Wise Island Life would have to catch a cold.

Baegun Island residents sometimes regretted allowing the filming.

But soon, they start their daily lives smiling at the recorded boy’s morning broadcasts.

The empty spaces of people who aren’t where they should be.

And the murals they left behind.

What’s there to regret? It wasn’t their fault anyway.

I wonder if that skinny kid is eating well.

That’s right. They must be doing well.

Don’t you remember how well they lived here even though it was a strange island? They’re the type who’ll do well anywhere.

Right, let’s get back to work.

The ship’s horn sounds again.

#

The epilogue of Wise Island Life briefly contains edited behind-the-scenes footage and the story of the departure day.

Below the footage of the boy who surprised the production team by sliding down the stair railings while playing tag with island children, there’s a caption saying ‘Adults under 100 years old, do not attempt this’,

The uncle who was best at picking bean sprouts.

Lee Jeongmin taking photo shoots with pinwheels.

Lee Sora playing alone on the beach saying “try to catch me,” and other short videos were uploaded.

The amount was so vast it was hard to believe it all happened in just two weeks.

Also, viewers realized it was really ending as they watched the cast and production team’s impression interviews.

The song that Halo produced from Gyeowool’s sketchbook plays with the ending credits. They were able to include it because Gyeowool’s song, after she came to Seoul, was successfully registered with the copyright association.

[It’s really over]

[Why did it end ㅠㅠㅠ]

[Now I only believe in Welcome to my world…]

[The mural still gives me chills…]

[I thought it was just scribbles]

[The mirror trick is really chilling, there wasn’t a mirror there when they drew it, the fact that they drew it considering the reflection…]

[Music prodigies who can’t draw anything else but draw sheet music like ghosts]

[Gyeowool’s song is good… It’s ironic how some called her ordinary while others called her a genius]

[Didn’t the Kim Sunchul incident conclude that having a teacher who recognizes talent is the most important?]

[It became bigger because it was more about qualifications than personality LOL. A musician not being able to recognize musical talent…]

[Look at how all his current instructor positions got cut]

[Looking back now, the comparison is hilarious Kim Sunchul is better vs Halo is better]

[But didn’t Halo say he’s not her teacher? That he never taught her, can’t teach her, and has no intention to teach]

[Cheongdam mothers probably won’t think so LOL]

[??: Even if you won’t teach, please just be friends with my child ㅠㅠㅠㅠ]

[Since releasing an album with Halo would be advantageous for college LOL. They say even Juilliard is eyeing Gyeowool]

The screen went black and everyone thought it was over.

But as the screen brightened again, it showed the sea.

“Thank you everyone for your hard work.”

“Good work everyone on the filming.”

Viewers who realized this was the journey home after filming ended froze with their remotes in hand.

[Post-credits scene!]

The cast all had bright faces.

Rather than feeling sad about the farewell, satisfaction with the happy times was greater.

“Are you going back to dramas now?”

“Yeah, back to my main job. You too?”

“I already have a script I’m looking at.”

“Ooh.”

Viewers were happy about the two actors’ return news.

“What about Jeongmin?”

“I’m going to rest a bit more.”

“Rest is really important too. Good thinking.”

They were relieved.

And the last person remaining.

Like the three people, viewers also half-expectantly look at the boy.

With so many masterpieces coming from the village, he’ll definitely release an album, right?

He absolutely had to.

“I’m going to release my second full album now.”

As expected! Office workers clenched their fists.

“Oh! Halo’s second full album? People will love that.”

“No. This one is as Roh Haeil.”

“!”

Oh? This is even better.

Well, since it’s Korean music, Roh Haeil’s name would fit better than Halo. Office workers’ hearts stirred at the main character’s Revival.

“So you’re still doing your main character.”

“Then is ‘Halo’ taking a break for now?”

This is obviously-.

“No.”

Huh?

“I think Halo will release an album too. No, I heard that Halo will make a comeback soon.”

?!

Office workers blinked.

Huh? Halo is making a comeback? How?

“Huh? You said you’re releasing a Roh Haeil album.”

“Am I the only one not understanding?”

Lee Sora scratches her itchy back.

Kwon Jaeik-ssi, I don’t understand either.

Soon, at the sound that comes, office workers stopped thinking.

“That’s easy because I already have some things made.”

“!”

“???”

The community that was running the bulletin board together couldn’t understand and posted ?, which soon became flooded with [LOL].

[Easy? Ah, that’s easy]

[Hey, you said you were in a slump. If you said you were in a slump, at least pretend]

[LOL What did I just hear]

Regardless of people’s shocked reactions, Halo smiled playfully.

“Maybe. This time I might overlap release dates with Halo. It seems like it’ll be a very interesting competition.”

“I was impressed watching Halo’s recent award ceremony, it looked good. Since it’s come to this, should I try going too? The Grammy Awards”

If it was someone else, people would have laughed.

Is the Grammy Awards a joke?

Are you Halo? they would say.

But when the real Halo, no, Roh Haeil revealed that his ‘goal is to go to the Grammys like Halo’, everyone could only laugh.

Half in resignation.

[Crazy LOL]

[A singer from the periphery throws down the gauntlet to a Hollywood superstar]

[Haeil, the Grammys is a bit LOL]

[LOL This might cause some controversy]

[Beat Halo first before talking, Haeil LOL]

[How dare he try to compete with senior Halo LOL]

└Is Halo the senior?

└Roh Haeil debuted in March, Halo debuted in December of the previous year

└LOL 4 months definitely makes him a senior

[Haeil, does 13 albums in 1 year look easy to you? LOL]

[Is this Hollywood-style name fight round 2? Hollywood is brutal]

[How weak must Halo look to get caught in a name fight with Jason first, and now round 2 with Roh Haeil LOL]

People looked forward to hearing many songs this second half of the year, since while they weren’t sure if Halo would come with an EP or full album, Roh Haeil said he was coming with his second full album.

[So both Halo and Roh Haeil are making comebacks this second half?]

[Wow the second half lineup is intense]

[Is Halo doing a single? EP? Full album?]

The clash between Halo and Roh Haeil.

“Haeil, weren’t you in a slump?”

Like the viewers, Lee Sora, who had been laughing carelessly, belatedly came to her senses and asked.

It was something the viewers had forgotten too.

Halo’s expression slowly changes.

Anyone could see it was an ‘Ah, right’ face of just remembering something forgotten.

Then with a bright smile, ‘Wise Island Life’ completely ends.

[LOL]

[LMAO]

[Is this what they call phone slump or whatever]

[He definitely seems to have forgotten he was in a slump]

[Isn’t the slump overcome anyway? He was making masterpieces every day at some point on Baegun Island]

[Whatever happened, it’s good. My artist overcame his slump and is making a comeback this time]

[Articles already up Halo (sub-character)VS Roh Haeil (main character)]

└But is Halo really the sub-character?

└Isn’t his real name his main character?

└Should judge by scale

:

└Kids fighting again

└When have the kids not fought

└Leave them be, kids grow up through fighting

And this is the story ahead.

“Hey, can you look at this?”

“What is it?”

“I made a bet with Gyeowool.”

“What bet.”

“The loser has to call the winner senior.”

“…”

“Stop looking at me like that and just look.”

Jang Jinsoo handed over the sheet music sheepishly.

Gyeowool, who should be gloating about being the senior, was nowhere to be seen.

Halo looked at the sheet music.

“Hmm.”

“What? Is it bad?”

Jang Jinsoo watched anxiously.

His friend had clear likes and dislikes, so he always had to ask with preparation.

“No, it’s good.”

“As I thou- what?”

“I said it seems good. Though the connection is a bit weak-“

Jang Jinsoo stares blankly at Halo.

He couldn’t hear whatever feedback Halo was giving.

Just the single word that it was good kept repeating in his ears.

“You said it’s good?”

Halo’s expression soon turned sulky when he realized his words weren’t being heard at all, but Jang Jinsoo’s heart slowly lifted.

“Why are you so happy about it.”

Halo didn’t understand.

That this was the first time he had praised Jang Jinsoo.

The corners of Jang Jinsoo’s mouth twitched upward.

He knows there’s still a lot to learn and he needs to keep growing.

Still-.

Ah, I’m doing well too.

That realization hit him.

After finishing feedback for Jang Jinsoo, Halo looked for the members.

He wondered where the members went, but they were gathered in the lobby.

And he caught a glimpse of Gyeowool, and next to her, blonde-.

“Rose?”

Following the sound, the girl’s head turned toward him.

Gyeowool was stuck right next to Rose.

They probably can’t communicate, so how did they become friends?

“When did you arrive, Rose?”

“Just now. Came to watch a movie with dad.”

“Movie? Ah.”

This summer, when the teaser for the highly anticipated movie HALO was released, it created an enormous response. With Halo’s sound, the scenery of 60s and 70s Britain, and the lead actor’s performance.

And what caused even more talk was that before its simultaneous December Christmas release, it would premiere first in Korea, according to the director’s official statement.

BB wasn’t a director who was only popular in Korea, and there was no reason to premiere the movie in Korea first, it was clearly being done solely for Halo.

They didn’t have to do this.

Thanks to that, he received countless requests from acquaintances asking to be invited to the preview. N-th viewing appointments to watch the movie together were also made.

“I was thinking about heading out soon.”

“The bags are all packed! Ready to leave anytime!”

“Huh? Where’s everyone going?”

Gyeowool looked up at Halo in confusion.

Halo had been busy for a while with Roh Haeil’s second full album and Halo’s album release.

Such a Halo was standing there today with just a guitar case, looking somewhat relieved.

“Yeah.”

He was thinking of going somewhere far, but since guests had arrived, should he postpone it? Or-.

“Want to come with us?”

Rose, who had learned some Korean, tilted her head.

Halo turned his head.

People were bustling on the first floor of the label.

“It’ll be a bit of a struggle to get through.”

“Where are you thinking of going?”

“Haven’t decided that yet.”

“Then?”

At Gyeowool’s question, Halo smiled pleasantly.

Through his slump experience, he came to understand how to make Roh Haeil’s music. The reason he couldn’t make Roh Haeil’s music while Halo’s music was so easy was probably because he didn’t really understand the meaning of ‘songs for people.’

Just like he needed to listen carefully to hear nature’s sounds, it was the same with people’s stories.

To tell stories for them, he needed to approach their lives and listen to their stories.

Didn’t someone say?

That everyone has their own story, and it’s beautiful just as it is.

Now, he was going to go listen to their beautiful stories.

“Let’s go.”

Aren’t you curious?

Halo who tells his own stories and

Roh Haeil who tells other people’s stories.

Who will remain at that end?

No one knows yet.

That’s something we’ll only know when we reach that end.

And at that end, we might get results no one expected.

Just like how Halo started again from the end of death.

Yes, this is the story ahead that he will reach someday.

“To make music.”

  1. Thank you for your hard work!🙏 This series has been a delight from beginning to end, and frankly I could’ve read 500 more chapters of this. The author had a story they wanted to tell, and wrote only what that story needed. So while I’m sad to see it go, I also respect that they held back what could’ve easily been an infinite story (though I wouldn’t mind that lol) and finished grandly.
With all this said, I will be back to reread this masterpiece soon. Dawn, thank you for a great translation, and good luck with your next project!

    1. I am so very glad you enjoyed it! And thank you as well for your kind words!

  2. It’s the end??
At first I found the manhwa version of it but I was so disappointed that it was so short. Then I found the original novel. I loved this through and through. The way author describes everything is fabulous.
I will really really miss this. Thank you for this amazing story 😭😭

    1. Unfortunately, yess.
I’m glad you enjoy this series! Thank you so much for reading it as well~
