“…”

Kayden and Diana wore complicated expressions, unable to speak for a while after hearing the story Amrien had delivered. Despite the distress and shock, the countless questions they had harbored until now finally began to make sense after hearing Amrien’s explanation.

So that’s why I felt calm and soothed whenever I touched it.

And the reason they sensed an aura similar to that of a dark elemental spirit from the mutant creature was because the dark elemental spirit itself originated from such creatures. The fact that they received human blood in exchange for lending their power, aside from mana, was a remnant of the nature they couldn’t completely abandon from their origins as monsters.

Still in confusion, Kayden muttered absentmindedly. “Then, the reason you were able to appear before us…”

<If we were to compare the size of the vessel that holds true mana to a number, I can only contract with someone who has a vessel precisely at 100. Neither an excess nor a deficiency will do.>

At this, Diana let out a small sigh. So, there was a reason why someone as exceptional as Kayden had been unable to contract with the spirit king.

<However, a light attribute elementalist and a dark attribute elementalist can adjust the size of their vessels through contact. One person happened to have a vessel size of about 120.>

Though it was hard to tell where Amrien was looking due to its spherical form, it was talking about Kayden. Then, it spoke about Diana.

<This one had a vessel size of about 80. The longer you two stayed in contact, the more you likely felt your mana decreasing or increasing, respectively.>

The truth of his words made the two nod simultaneously. Kayden’s mana had gradually decreased, and his seizures had lessened, while Diana’s mana had increased, allowing her to use a wider range of abilities.

<True mana, like water, flows from higher to lower. And just now, your vessels reached exactly the size of 100.>

Kayden and Diana exchanged a silent glance. It was then that a solemn voice interrupted.

<So, I ask you this.>

The overwhelming presence they felt when they first met surrounded them again, and a low hum emitted from the sphere.

<Will you make a contract with me?>

The two were silent for a moment. Diana was the first to speak.

“If we make a contract with you… can you get rid of that?” She asked cautiously, her eyes turning toward the frozen image of the demonic dragon hanging in midair.

But Amrien didn’t give a definite answer. More accurately, it was something it couldn’t promise.

<Who knows? I’m just a being that lends power. Everything depends on you.>

At Amrien’s words, Diana turned her gaze to Kayden, who had already been looking at her.

As she quietly held his gaze, Diana smiled faintly. Kayden, too, let out a small chuckle in response. They now knew what each other was thinking without exchanging words. And at this moment, they shared the same thought.

With a glance from Kayden, Diana looked up at Amrien with a smile on her lips. She slowly began to speak. “We…”

“Please, go ahead.” The knight opened the iron door of the prison cell and bowed his head.

Rebecca stepped inside without hesitation. She couldn’t have refused, even if she wanted to, as her hands were already bound.

Clang— The sound of the iron door locking behind her echoed, and the knight’s presence faded into the distance.

Sigh.” Rebecca let out a soft breath and sat on the bed inside the cell.

Originally, it was just a wooden plank, chained to serve as both chair and bed, but it had been changed thanks to Kayden’s consideration.

Heheh…”

Just then, a chilling laugh came from beyond the iron bars. Her gaze was naturally drawn to the source. Rebecca looked toward the opposite cell.

There, unlike her, lying sprawled on the cold floor, was Xavier Findlay. His usual pristine appearance, which didn’t seem like it would allow even a needle to pierce, was gone. His hair was a mess, and he seemed out of his mind.

Xavier, with his hands bound behind his back, laughed like a madman, mocking Rebecca. “If it were me, I would have chosen death over begging for my life from those vermin.”

“…”

“You were never fit for the throne from the start. I thought you might have inherited some of my cunning, so I let you sit on the throne for a while, but everything…”

Xavier continued to intermittently insult Rebecca as though breathing, but she showed no reaction. Instead, she calmly reflected on recent events in her mind. The memories were still vivid.

“What is that…”

At the moment the demonic dragon rose into the sky, Rebecca had momentarily forgotten her standoff with Duke Findlay, her gaze stolen by the sight. She, too, hadn’t expected the demonic dragon to be able to fly.

“Die!”

Taking advantage of the distraction, Duke Findlay swung his sword at Rebecca. By the time she realized it, the tip of the dagger was already about to pierce her heart. Rebecca instinctively widened her eyes, sensing death. Then, something unexpected happened.

Thwack!

“Aargh!”

An arrow flew in from somewhere, precisely striking the hand holding the dagger. The duke screamed in agony and fell to the ground, giving Rebecca a moment of surprise as she turned her head.

“What…”

“Your Highness! Are you alright?!”

“Are you safe?!”

Then, a few knights from the first order were seen rushing over from not far away. For one of the few times in her life, Rebecca was genuinely taken aback. That was because her claim to Duke Findlay that she had come alone wasn’t a lie. So when the knights, with worried expressions, rushed to her side, her voice instinctively became stiff. It was a reflex born out of her surprise.

“I told you to hold your position.”

“Ah, but… We were just worried since you were going alone…”

“We apologize.”

The knights, looking guilty, hung their heads low. Seeing the tops of their heads, Rebecca found herself unable to say anything as her throat tightened with emotion.

What awakened them was the wind and heat that suddenly swept over them. As they turned their anxious gazes toward the demonic dragon, they noticed the ominous energy gathering around its mouth and froze in terror.

“No…”

If they were hit by that, both humans and monsters alike would be annihilated.

Just as Rebecca gritted her teeth, sensing the impending doom. Something unbelievable happened.

“Y-Your Highness! Over there!”

The knights, also awaiting the end, shouted in surprise. Their gaze was directed toward the battlefield where Kayden and Diana stood.

They had certainly felt the intense mana that seemed ready to burn everything to ashes. But just before the flames from the demonic dragon’s mouth reached the people—Boom! The flames suddenly veered off and shot into the sky, as if deflected by some unseen force.

“What was that…”

“A person…?”

As the dust stirred up by the impact cleared, two figures were revealed beyond it. Kayden and Diana.

I heard they made a contract with the spirit king.

At the moment of greatest crisis, the two succeeded in making a contract with the spirit king and worked together to bring down the demonic dragon.

Diana bound the demonic dragon’s wings, forcing it to the ground, while Kayden ran in and severed the wings. After taking out both wings, they beheaded the creature and destroyed its heart. Their actions were as coordinated as a well-rehearsed performance, though they couldn’t control the aftermath. Everyone around them was preoccupied with trying not to get swept away by the demonic dragon’s thrashing tail and claws.

Rebecca, watching their battle in a daze, snapped back to reality as the demonic dragon’s head was severed and, together with the knights, captured Xavier Findlay. As Rebecca knocked him unconscious while he struggled, the battle against the demonic dragon also came to an end. Thus, Xavier Findlay’s final outburst was over.

The battle was over, but the real work always comes after a war. Through this incident, Kayden and Diana were fully hailed as heroes. It was only natural since they were the first to contract with the spirit king after the original five elementalists.

The existence of the dark attribute spirit was also proven. Where did they even manage to find those old tomes?

Rebecca clicked her tongue in frustration. She, too, had sought information on the dark attribute spirit but to no avail. In the end, it was Kayden who found the answers.

Recently, the deciphering of the old tomes that Kayden and Diana had gathered had finally been completed. The result was that the books they had obtained were the diaries of the first sovereign, Daisy Bluebell, and Lombard Dihanis, the first dark attribute elementalist.
