Transit Love After Revenge Chapter 22
Yoonhyuk straightened up his upper body again. He drank half of the alcohol left in his glass. Haeyoung stared at him intently.
Was he comforting Haeyoung because he knew her circumstances? Or was he just teasing her?
She couldn’t tell his reason or his intent, but one thing was certain, those words, whatever they were meant to be, had oddly comforted Haeyoung.
“What about you? Did Minji catch your eye at first sight?”
“Hmm.”
Even though they had agreed to say it was love at first sight, Yoonhyuk hesitated.
Her palms grew damp with sweat. ‘He shouldn’t say no.’ Even though Yoonhyuk was on her side, he still felt like a wild card, you never knew where would land.
“Yeah.”
“Minji is cute, isn’t she?”
“Yeah.”
‘Phew.’ His expression wasn’t exactly what you would expect from someone who found someone cute, but at least he was sticking to the agreed script.
“Have a good date tomorrow.”
“I’m good at everything. What about you?”
“Huh?”
“What are you doing tomorrow? It seems like you don’t have any plans.”
“Going on a date.”
“With who? Seongjun-nim?”
Yoonhyuk lifted his head and stared intently at her again.
It was a gaze she still hadn’t gotten used to. He was just looking, nothing more. But for some reason, it felt like standing completely exposed in front of him.
She shook her head. Yoonhyuk’s brows arched. ‘If not Seongjun, then who?’ His questioning gaze said it all without a word.
“Jaeyoung. I asked him out on a date.”
She didn’t expect anything to come of it, but she had booked the slot ahead of time, hoping she might snag an extra vote that would have gone to Minji.
“With another guy? I didn’t see you like that, are you the player type?”
“What? I just wanted to get to know everyone.”
“Have you forgotten that you were supposed to get my permission before seeing other guys?”
“Are you my father?”
“Let’s just say I’m your guardian. So what time are you leaving?”
“Well, we decided to have lunch….”
“What time will you be back?”
“If it’s fun, it might run late.”
“Then come back early.”
“You’re worried you will feel awkward because you’re not close with anyone yet? Don’t worry. You’ll be with Minji all day anyway. You’ll probably come home later than me.”
“Come home and wait for me in your room.”
“What, I’m not your dog.”
Yoonhyuk tilted his head. A serious wrinkle formed between his brows. ‘Was that too harsh? Or is he pondering something again?’
“I don’t like dogs. But I’ll let you do it if you want. You’re my dog, and I’m your guardian. Perfect match.”
“I never asked for that.”
“Even if you didn’t, I’ll do it for you.”
“I decline.”
“You don’t have to decline.”
“Please, I earnestly decline.”
They burst into silly laughter at the same time. At this rate, they might actually look like friends on screen.
“What did you do today?”
“I went to a sheep ranch.”
“And? Tell me what you did while I wasn’t there.”
Yoonhyuk leaned his chin on his hand and urged her to go on. It was a question completely unrelated to their prior strategy or her revenge.
So Haeyoung slowly recounted what she did that day. Yoonhyuk asked questions every time she paused.
Answering him led her to share even the most trivial things, how it felt to pet the sheep, whether she was scared, how sore her legs were after the hike, what the weather was like, how the sky looked. The small talk kept going endlessly.
Suddenly, she realized it had been a long time since she had had a moment like this. Even when she was dating Seongjun, they rarely had everyday conversations like this past the early days of their relationship. Back then, she had just listened. That was all.
But those distracting thought would quickly vanish whenever Yoonhyuk threw out another question.
They passed the time chatting about nothing important, and oddly enough, her heart felt a little lighter. She didn’t think about revenge, or the show, or how others might perceive her, or even the sickening sight of Minji and Seongjun together.
How long had it been?
There was no sound of showers anymore. Even the occasional footsteps from upstairs had stopped.
“What are you two doing?”
Haeyoung was startled by the unfamiliar voice that shattered their private world.. Was there anyone still awake?
It was Seongjun. Maybe he had come out while getting ready for bed, or maybe he had already been asleep. His hood was pulled over his head.
He looked back and forth between Yoonhyuk and Haeyoung, who were sitting apart in the dim living room.
It had been over three hours since the drinking session had ended.
There were two glasses on the table. There was no one else. Seongjun’s face hardened.
“Aren“You’re still up?”
“I couldn’t sleep, so I was having another drink.”
“Just the two of you?”
His voice was laced with cold thorns. Haeyoung instinctively looked to him, checked Seongjun’s expression.
If they weren’t on camera, Seongjun would have already lost it. He hated it even when she exchanged casual messages with other men.
There was even a time he mistook a spam ad for a message from one of her guy friends and they had a huge fight.
‘Why did he do that when he didn’t even like me? Did he hate the idea of someone like me betraying him?’
But now, no matter what she did, she didn’t have to feel sorry anymore.
She almost hoped Seongjun would take this as cheating. Blow up. Rage. Get so mad he couldn’t sleep.
“Oh? Earlier you picked Minji, and now you’re with Haeyoung? Yoonhyuk, are you one of those flirty types who tries a little bit of everything?”
Seongjun said with a smile, but his tone was not like that at all. It seemed like he was openly picking a fight.
Haeyoung panicked. What if Yoonhyuk bit back? The show had just started. They couldn’t cross the line this early.
Contrary to Haeyoung’s worries, Yoonhyuk just let out a hearty laugh.
Then he turned to Haeyoung, flashing a bright, cheeky smile. As if to say, ‘Did you hear that?’
“Did you hear that? Haeyoung-nim, looks like we’re the same now.”
He was referring to the words he had said to Haeyoung a little while ago, calling her a player.
However, Seongjun’s face darkened even more. It seemed to bother him that they were having a conversation only the two of them understood, right in front of him.
“What were you two talking about that was so interesting? Mind letting me join? I actually came out because I wanted a drink too.”
Anyone could tell he had been getting ready for bed, but Seongjun sat right down next to Haeyoung on the floor as he said that.
“A drink sounds nice. But what a shame, we were just about to get up.”
Yoonhyuk held up two empty glasses as if he was showing it to him. Then he grabbed Haeyoung’s wrist and stood up together.
Left sitting alone, Seongjun looked up at them, no, at the hand Yoonhyuk had wrapped around Haeyoung’s wrist.
Haeyoung knew that expression. He was about to yell. To curse her out.
But maybe because Yoonhyuk was bigger than him, or maybe because of the cameras, Seongjun did nothing. He simply glared at Haeyoung, barely holding back his rage.
“If you want a drink, I’ll get it for you. That much, I can do it. Beer? Whiskey? Wine? What would you like?”
Yoonhyuk finally put the finishing touches with a smile that didn’t quite look like one.
“Still, don’t drink too much. Drinking alone like that? That’s how you end up an alcoholic.”
* * *
A short while earlier, after the drinking party had ended, Seongjun lay in his dark room, wide awake. He couldn’t fall asleep easily.
“Han Yoonhyuk….”
The newly arrived cast member was already getting on his nerves. It was to the point where he wondered if there could be someone he didn’t like from the first impression.
Sure, the guy was smooth and good-looking, but Seongjun didn’t think he lost out in comparison. If anything, he might have even had the upper hand. That guy might have had the textbook handsome look, but when it came to what women really liked, he had his own advantages.
It was just that Yoonhyuk was more impactful because he was introduced as the ‘catfish’ contestant.
The PD’s pick?
Maybe the main PD just preferred that type. Figures.
The PD was a woman, right? Women tend to be emotional. That explained it.
‘But in terms of height, um, wasn’t I a little taller? … Or not?’
And then, there was the fact that guy Han Yoonhyuk chose Minji the moment he arrived.
At that moment, Seongjun realized why Han Yoonhyuk’s first impression was so bad.
It felt like being thrown back to high school, back to the days when he had a crush on Minji for years.
