Moreover, every member of the group had blood smeared all over their bodies in various places, and Dayoung in particular was in no state to speak of, having been drenched in it.

“I left the boiler on. For now, everyone should wash up and get some rest.”

They had set out in the evening, arrived at Team B’s lodging at dawn, then rushed back and arrived in the morning.

Seeing their exhausted, hollow faces, Minho patted their shoulders and sent them up to the third floor.

Dayoung couldn’t enter her room looking the way she did, so she asked Seoyeon to bring her some clothes. Then she went into the changing room and took off her clothes.

Bloodstains were still on her body too.

Dayoung showered and washed her hair, scrubbing away the blood that clung to her skin.

Red water flowed down the drain. She stared at the bloody water as it swirled away, and when no more blood ran, she stepped into the small tub, drew her knees up, and hugged them tightly.

It hurt. How much more of this pain would she have to endure in the future?

Even facing their deaths for just one day had torn her heart apart like this.

If something happened to even one person in the group, could she hold on? Why had she thought the only enemies were zombies?

Why did she have to lose the people most precious to her to humans—to the very people she had to survive alongside?

Her thoughts chained one after another, and the overwhelming flood of them made her head throb. Then, one by one, tears began to fall from Dayoung’s eyes and splash onto the water’s surface.

“Hng… uwaaaah…”

Dayoung’s sobs echoed inside the bathhouse, soon passing through the changing room and ringing out beyond.

The crying reached the ears of the group members who had been anxiously pacing outside the bathhouse, worried about her.

Their hearts ached because they couldn’t go in to comfort her.

“Should I go in and at least try to comfort her?”

“No. This isn’t something you can endure just because someone comforts you. She has to overcome it herself. Dayoung-noona is strong—she’ll get through it.”

As Seoyeon stomped her feet anxiously while speaking, Ian gently soothed her.

For a long while, Dayoung’s crying could be heard, and just when it seemed to have finally calmed, the group began to relax a little, when a loud curse suddenly rang out.

A very crisp, satisfying one.

“Ah. Thinking about it pisses me off. You call me here because you need me, then why make me cry? Do you think I’m that easy? You wanna go one-on-one with me? Wanna try daidai with me? Hey!!!! You 18-color crayon bastard!! Just because you’re a god, that’s everything?? Do I look like total dog shit to you?? I was gonna go easy on you, but now I can’t. Is a person’s life a joke?? Are we that!! That worthless?? You said to protect people… Didn’t I get sent back here? Then you should at least give me a chance to protect them… So I can… protect them… You have to give me that chance, don’t you… Hic… Ughhh. So annoying. Screw everyone! Uhhheung.”

“I really love and like Noona. But sometimes I get worried.”

Dohun shook his head at Dayoung’s furious outburst as it burst out of the changing room and looked at the group.

Hayun, who had just come out of the changing room, lightly smacked the back of Dohun’s head.

“You shouldn’t say stuff like that. Even I would’ve exploded like that.”

“No, I get that it’s tough. But sometimes she goes on about gods and whatever. I get why she resents God, but the way she says it is kinda weird.”

“Just let it slide. She’s probably not in her right mind right now.”

Hayun patted Dohun’s head and trudged back to the room.

The group that had gathered in the changing room also began to leave one by one.

A while later, Dayoung returned to the room, struggling to open her puffy, fish-like eyes. Having traveled all night and cried for so long, she collapsed onto the bed like a sack and fell asleep.

Time passed, and when dinner time approached, Dayoung woke up hungry.

She felt a bit of self-loathing—how can I be hungry in a situation like this?—but it was a physiological need, so what could she do?

She rubbed the sleep from her eyes and shuffled out, when Dohun, who was coming out of the room, quietly took her hand.

Dayoung squeezed back the warm hand.

“We decided we’re all going together tomorrow for the funeral procession. Only four people will stay to guard the mall, lock it up, and the rest will go pay respects. You know how they say the more people at a funeral and procession, the better. Plus, we can see Iseo and Jiseo too.”

“That’s a good idea. Jiyeong and unnie Mihee will like it too. They were missing our group.”

“Us?”

“Yeah. I bragged a lot about how kind, handsome, pretty, and cute our kids are. So we planned to come hang out at the mall after setting up all the barricades…”

“Then tomorrow we can just go show our faces.”

“Yeah…”

“Noona.”

“Hm?”

Dohun stopped walking and called out to Dayoung.

At the sudden halt, Dayoung stopped too and looked up at Dohun’s face.

“Our pretty noona’s face is a total mess. Still… stop crying now. Tomorrow, let’s send the two of them off with a smiling, pretty face. Okay?”

“Yeah… I should…”

Dohun hugged Dayoung tightly, then took her hand again and headed toward the cafeteria.

The mood among the group gathered in the cafeteria was grim.

Most of them were still too young to properly accept someone’s death, and getting used to something like this was something no one could do, no matter their age.

Dayoung forced a smile at the sight of them and stepped inside.

“What’s for dinner?”

“Today it’s extra spicy budae jjigae.”

“Wow. Sounds delicious. Let’s eat!”

Dayoung tried to act cheerful and scooped a big spoonful of rice into her mouth. Then she put some budae jjigae in her mouth and gave Theo a thumbs-up.

But soon, tears streaming down her cheeks forced her to lower her head.

Seeing Dayoung like that, Ian and Minho, who were sitting next to her, quietly patted her back and handed her a handkerchief.

“Sniff. Sorry. I wasn’t going to cry. Just today. Sob… only right now… I’ll cry and then stop… Hic.”

Dayoung cried for a long while before finally stopping. Then she bravely shoved rice into her mouth. So she could send the two of them off with a smile—bravely.

The next morning, the entire group dressed in black clothes. Dayoung also wore black pants and a shirt and stood at the entrance.

Everyone shouldered large bags and climbed onto their kick scooters.

At Dayoung’s words, Hoyoung and Youngshik picked up their spoons.

Once the two of them started eating, the rest of the group also began to eat one by one.

Except for Dayoung and Hayun, the group left for the shopping mall, and Dayoung distributed the guns she had brought in her bag to the others.

“I’m going to teach you about guns for the next two weeks or so. We have rifles and pistols, and I brought a lot of ammo, so use these to protect yourselves.”

“Anyone who’s been in the military, raise your hand.”

At Hayun’s words, about a dozen men raised their hands.

Dayoung carefully memorized their faces.

“Then eleven of you. We’ll start practice tomorrow morning. Since you’ve served in the military, you’ll probably learn quickly.”

At Dayoung’s words, the men nodded with expressions full of tension.

After dinner, Hoyoung guided Dayoung to a room.

“You can stay here. This is where Jiyeong unnie and Mihee unnie used to stay.”

“Okay… thank you.”

“No, I’m the thankful one. Thanks to you, we could send the unnies off properly.”

“…”

“You must be tired today, so rest well.”

“You too, Hoyoung.”

A week had passed since Dayoung and Hayun started staying at Team B’s lodging.

From the shopping mall side, reconnaissance teams started carrying items needed by Team B, two or three people per day.

There was still quite a lot of food left, but daily necessities were almost gone.

They gathered and carried essentials like toilet paper, wet wipes, face-washing tools, and so on.

The month had changed to September, but the midday sun was still scorching hot.

As men who had completed military service, they handled guns with familiarity and spent time practicing against nearby zombies.

At this rate, it seemed Hayun and Dayoung would soon become unnecessary.

Dayoung tried to fall asleep.

Maybe because it was an unfamiliar place?

For a week now, Dayoung hadn’t been able to sleep properly and kept tossing and turning.

Even when she barely managed to fall asleep, she would wake up again after just one or two hours and repeat the tossing and turning.

“If this keeps up, my dark circles are going to reach my feet…”

Dayoung sighed and tossed again.
