The Only Woman in a Zombie Apocalypse Vol. 3 Chapter 90 - Everything is according to God’s will. No, according to my mine

Author: Nikss

Dayoung and the group began walking eastward.

Please, let us not be too late. Let us be able to protect precious lives.

The group’s steps gradually quickened.

After walking just a little over 100 meters, the group spotted a building from which noisy, chaotic sounds were coming.

Is that the place?

Two men came out of the noisy building.

And the moment Dayoung saw what they were holding in their hands, rage flared in her eyes.

It was a naked woman. The two men, each holding one arm and one leg, grumbled as they came out.

They tossed the woman onto the pile of trash as if throwing away garbage, then went back inside the building.

The hand holding the rifle began to tremble violently.

Noticing the change in Dayoung, Hayun grabbed her arm and pulled her backward. She positioned Dayoung where the building couldn’t see them, held her arm, and gently shook it.

“Dayoung, Kim Dayoung. Can you hear me?”

“…”

“Dayoung, look at me. Please?”

“…”

“Kim Dayoung. Snap out of it and look at me.”

Dayoung’s unfocused pupils slowly turned toward Hayun.

Eyes like this… Hayun had never seen them before in Dayoung.

Eyes that seemed completely hollow inside. Hayun flinched for a moment, but soon began soothing her again.

“We still don’t know if it’s Jiyeong and Mihee. Right? You have to pull yourself together. Are you going to let everyone in the group get hurt?”

“No. No more people getting hurt or dying. But… I really can’t hold it in anymore.”

Dayoung handed the rifle to Hayun and said,

“Give me the pistol.”

At Dayoung’s firm words, both Hayun and Dodam pulled out the handguns tucked at their waists and offered them.

Dayoung removed the magazine, checked that it was fully loaded with rounds packed tightly, then slid it back in.

Dayoung walked forward with heavy, deliberate steps. When she reached the spot where the woman had been casually discarded, she looked down at the bodies.

Two women who appeared to have been dead for quite some time, and two others who were still bleeding.

Fresh bruises all over their bodies.

Eyes that hadn’t even been allowed to close in death.

Shin Jiyeong. Park Mihee.

Dayoung gently closed the eyes of the two women.

Then she returned to the group, clenched her teeth, and spoke.

“I’m going in alone. Seojun and Minshik-oppa, go to Team B’s base and… bring Hoyeong and Mihee-unnie’s father. The rest stay here and wait. And take off your t-shirts… and cover them.”

“Dayoung!”

“Noona!”

“Don’t come in. I’m so worked up right now I might shoot anyone, so absolutely do not come in.”

The group fidgeted anxiously watching Dayoung’s back as she headed toward the building.

They wanted to follow her in, and they knew they should, but her resolute voice made it impossible to move easily.

“You’re all fucking dead. You pieces of shit.”

When Dayoung reached the building entrance, her eyes were sharp and fierce. She quietly entered the building.

As if melting silently into the dark shadows.

“What the? A woman?? A woman came here on her own?? Hey, quick, get the boss—”

Bang—

“Ugh… uaaah.”

Bang— Bang— Bang—

The men collapsed without finishing their sentences. Dayoung moved inside, relentlessly pulling the trigger.

As she fired, she thought to herself, What kind of fucking will makes someone return to this place with a body that can’t do anything without a gun?

A body that can’t move as fast as Soldier-Dayoung, can’t even hit people properly—why the hell is a body like this needed?

Dayoung was furious. She pulled the trigger at every person she saw, then suddenly sensed a presence behind her and spun her body.

Surprised for a moment at how quickly her body moved compared to what she expected, she immediately pulled the trigger again.

While she was on the top floor, shooting wildly, someone grabbed her throat from behind.

‘Ugh…’

Dayoung’s throat was blocked for an instant, but she raised her hand and pulled the trigger right into the man’s face. Blood sprayed like a fountain over her head, but Dayoung simply wiped the blood from her eyes with a swipe and kept moving forward.

A pistol that held 7 rounds.

Dayoung shoved the two now-empty magazines into her side pockets and pulled out the pistol tucked in her back waistband.

And finally—

Bang—

While Seojun and Minshik headed toward Team B’s base, the remaining Hayun, Jiseok, and Dodam waited for Dayoung with worried hearts.

They moved Jiyeong and Mihee’s bodies and laid them out neatly side by side.

Hayun and Jiseok, who were physically larger, took off their own shirts and covered the two bodies with them.

The three men watched the building with uneasy hearts. Fifteen gunshots rang out, and then everything fell silent.

At the loud gunfire, zombies were growling and swarming in from all directions, but they were caught on the ropes the group had set up and couldn’t move.

A short while later, Dayoung emerged from the building. Her entire bodywas  drenched in blood.

The group couldn’t hide their shock at the sight of Dayoung walking slowly toward them with an expressionless face. Red blood dripped steadily from her hair onto her face.

As she indifferently wiped the blood covering her eyes, Dodam hurriedly took off his t-shirt and used it to clean Dayoung’s blood-smeared face.

“Noona! What happened? Are you hurt anywhere?? What is all this blood?”

“It’s not mine. I shot someone right above my head. It splattered.”

While receiving Dodam’s careful touch, Dayoung gazed at the two women’s bodies lying out neatly.

A surge of emotion rose from her throat, and she forced strength into her eyes.

Why. Why are women the ones who can’t be protected? Because they’re women?

Even if they said no, we should have taken them to the shopping mall. Why did we just leave them like that?

Dayoung began to blame herself.

Just as she barely managed to compose herself, something would come along and disturb her heart again.

Why on earth? What exactly do they expect from me?

A moment later, Hoyeong came running quickly, and Yeongseok—Mihee’s father—was being carried on Minshik’s back.

It seemed Seojun and Minshik had already explained things ahead of time. When Hoyeong hesitated and stopped, Yeongseok got down from Minshik’s back and limped forward step by step.

In the end, Yeongseok’s legs gave out before he could get close, and he collapsed to the ground. Hoyeong staggered toward Jiyeong.

“Ah… no… Nooooo!!!!!!! Noona, noona!! Wake up. Please, this can’t be happening!!!”

“Mi… Mihee-ya, Mihee-ya!!”

Crawling on all fours toward Mihee’s body, Yeongseok embraced the corpse and wailed.

Tears welled up in the eyes of the group members watching the scene. But Dayoung still stared at it all with an utterly expressionless face.

Hayun began to worry seeing Dayoung like this.

What if her emotions suddenly explode all at once?

She looked like she might end up unable to sleep again and suffering, just like when she was sick not long ago.

“Uwaaaah. No. Noona. Noona!!”

“How am I supposed to go on living, this father… Mihee, Mihee!!”

“…”

The two men’s wailing did not stop easily.

The death of the last remaining family they had in this world had paralyzed their reason.

“It’s because of me. Because of me! Noona, noona!!!”

After a long while of sobbing, when the two had calmed down a little, Dayoung spoke.

“You two, go back to the lodging and bring out Jiyeong and Mihee-unnie’s clothes. The cleanest ones you can find.”

“??”

“We can’t send them off like this.”

At Dayoung’s words, they looked at the two bodies covered only with t-shirts and staggered to their feet.

Minshik took the two men to the lodging, while the rest of the group carefully lifted the two bodies. When they arrived in front of Team B’s lodging, all of Team B’s members were already outside, sobbing quietly.

Hoyeong and Yeongseok approached, carrying the clothes. They wiped away the blood and dressed the bodies.

Dayoung looked at the two neatly laid-out corpses and remembered the night they had stayed up talking together.

Just one single night—out of so many days, only one night—but it was a night that would remain in her memory for a long time.

The images of the two women smiling brightly came to mind, and Dayoung clenched her fist tightly.

“There’s a small mountain nearby. Our group’s family members are resting there. We’ll prepare the graves in that direction. It’s the early morning of the 28th now, so we’ll bury them in the morning of the 29th. We’ll take them to the building next door for now. Say your final goodbyes. Tomorrow… I’ll come back again.”

The group carried the two bodies inside the building.

The weather was hot, so they knew the burial needed to happen as quickly as possible, but they still couldn’t send them off like this.

Dayoung and the others watched the sobbing Team B members for a moment before turning to leave. Before departing, Dayoung radioed the shopping mall.

“Connect me to Han-gyeol.”

―Dayoung-ah, are you okay?

“Yeah… I’m okay.”

―Noona, it’s Han-gyeol.

“The name tags we made last time… can you make two more?”

―…Hold on. I’ll grab something to write with.

A short silence followed, and then Han-gyeol came back with paper and a pen.

―Tell me the names.

“Shin Jiyeong, born April 18, 2003. Park Mihee, born November 15, 2000. Date of death… August 28, 2024.”

―I’ll make them right away. Noona, come back safely.

“Yeah.”

Seeing Dayoung trying hard to hold back her tears, the expressions on the group’s faces twisted.

How much time would need to pass before this became bearable?

How much longer would they have to endure until a day came when no one got hurt or died?

Would such a day even arrive?

In this place, they had to risk their lives every single day just to survive.

Could they really make it?

A heavy silence settled over them as the group arrived back at the shopping mall.

Seeing the dark expressions on their faces, the people who had been waiting at the mall couldn’t easily bring themselves to speak.
