And without responding to me, they abandoned the laundry and began leaving the laundry room one by one.
“Huh? Hey, friends! Where are you going!”
Even though I called out to them, they kept ignoring me, but then suddenly they stopped.
“Oh my.”
“…So you were here, Evien.”
Evan was standing in front of the laundry room, staring at me intently.
“Evan?”
‘Why is he here…? No, more importantly, how did he know I was here?’
The ghostly maids exchanged glances with each other.
“Why… aren’t you startled to see us?”
One of the maids asked Evan. After all, it would be normal for an ordinary survivor to be completely terrified at the sight of ghosts.
“Because I’m not scared.”
Evan treated the ghostly maids naturally, as if they were ordinary people.
“I have business with that evil spirit. Could you step aside?”
Evan came to a stop and waited until the ghosts moved aside, and only after they stepped to the left and right did he finally walk toward me.
‘They’re just ghosts, so you could pass right through them. Why bother…’
I approached Evan.
“How did you get here?”
“It’s simple. I asked the ghosts.”
Evan answered nonchalantly.
‘What’s with that calm attitude? Why on earth has he changed like that?’
“Evan… are you saying ghosts don’t scare you at all? Not even a little?”
“I’m not afraid of you, an evil spirit, so why would other ghosts be any different? The ghosts here just quietly go about their business—they don’t even try to harm us.”
Well, he wasn’t wrong. Aside from me and a few others, ordinary ghosts didn’t pay much attention to survivors anyway. I was about to ask Evan my next question when I saw the ghostly maids behind him. They were peeking their heads out, eavesdropping on our conversation.
“Look at him. His eyes are huge.”
“Oh my, there he is!”
Noticing that my attention was on the ghosts, Evan also glanced back discreetly.
“Ella, stop that and take a look too. That man over there. He’s a survivor, yet he’s not afraid of us at all, and on top of that, he’s handso—”
“Shh, shh! Lady Evien is looking at you!”
Only then did they realize we were watching them and quickly ran away. Evan, witnessing the scene, smiled faintly.
“Look at that. It’s not scary at all.”
“….”
How interesting. How can a person change that much?
‘No way.’
Suddenly, the mark of the evil god I saw on the ceiling came to mind—along with the words that had felt like a warning to me.
‘Could it be… Evan?’
If there really is a survivor connected to the evil god, it could very well be Evan. I slowly examined Evan’s large eyes, scrutinizing them carefully.
‘He wouldn’t be toying with me… would he…?’
Evan’s sudden change in personality was more than enough to make me suspicious. As I stared intently into his eyes, trying to discern the truth, he blinked.
“Why? Don’t tell me you find my eyes fascinating too.”
“W, what are you talking about?”
“But why are you staring at me so intently?”
Evan gave a sly, teasing smile.
“Forget it. So why did you come looking for me?”
“To see you.”
When I smoothly changed the subject, Evan just as naturally picked up on it and replied.
“What?”
Startled, I stepped back a little, and Evan deliberately moved even closer to me.
“Why, why are you doing this?”
“Haha. Your reaction is hilarious.”
Evan laughed.
“I’m usually the one who likes to tease, you know…”
Feeling my pride wounded, I puffed myself up and tried to show him just how terrifying an evil spirit could be.
“Be honest. You’re scared, but you’re just pretending you’re not, right?”
“I’m sorry, maybe it works on others—but to me, you just look like a flustered lady trying to act tough.”
“What did you say?”
Well, the last time I puffed myself up, he also said it wasn’t scary. I guess I really must look like a human to him.
“Why? You look pretty shocked. You’ve gone really pale.”
I touched my face.
“Your emotions change from moment to moment, and I can see it. Like I said before, unlike other ghosts, you’re not transparent. So when your face turns pale or flushes red, it’s all visible to me.”
He can even see my skin as vividly as a human’s? Why on earth does it only look that way to Evan?
“Anyway, the reason I came to find you is because of what happened yesterday.”
He got to the point.
“Ah, you ran away pretty well, didn’t you?”
After Basileon went back to his room, I checked the map and confirmed that Evan had safely evacuated to another floor.
“Not that. I saw you comforting the Duke of Ravenwood.”
Thump—
All of a sudden, it felt like my heart dropped.
‘Then… does that mean he also saw the part where Basileon hugged me…’
“You… your cheeks are flushed.”
“H, how far did you see?”
“Just. From the duke slashing at empty air, to you bringing over the piano cover and doing something that made him come to his senses. Then he hugged you… and the talk about the curse.”
Evan calmly recounted everything he’d seen.
“Ah. Ahh… really? I thought you’d evacuated right away.”
“I watched just in case. Even if you’re an evil spirit, something might’ve happened, so I didn’t run away and kept an eye on you. You helped me too, after all.”
That makes sense. Evan, being inherently kind, wouldn’t just run off and leave me behind.
‘But because of that personality, he ended up seeing something he didn’t need to… haha.’
It worried me. The current survivors shouldn’t know anything about the evil god. And if—just considering the slightest possibility—Evan really is connected to the evil god…
‘That would be way too creepy, wouldn’t it?’
Evan blinked his brown eyes and hit me with a direct blow.
“So, what exactly is going on between you and Basileon Ravenwood?”
‘…He’s actually asking that?’
I answered, pretending it was no big deal.
“Lilith already told you, didn’t she? Evil spirits are the second most dangerous beings after the Duke of Ravenwood.”
“Mhm. That’s right.”
“So, in a way, Basileon and I used to be partners. But now my thinking has changed, which is why I don’t go around with him anymore.”
Evan shook his head, as if he wasn’t satisfied with what I was saying.
“I don’t care about that. I mean yesterday—it looked… kind of emotional, you know? Watching that scene, I couldn’t help but think the Duke of Ravenwood might… like you.”
Once again, my heart sank.
“What are you talking about? Absolutely not. It’s not a matter of romantic feelings—Basileon has a reason to be obsessed with me.”
“What’s the reason?”
“You don’t have to know.”
I still couldn’t tell Evan everything, not when I didn’t fully trust him. Ignoring Evan, who clearly wanted to hear more, I flew outside.
“Kyaah!”
The ghost maids were flying back toward the laundry room, but when they ran into me, they screamed.
‘Don’t tell me… they came back to see Evan again.’
They were startled because I suddenly flew outside.
‘…Should I be glad they weren’t listening from outside?’
I let out a sigh and flew over to the maids.
“Ghost friends, his personality isn’t great. So don’t go liking him just because of his looks.”
Before Evan followed me outside, I whispered in their ears.
“L, Lady Evien, it seems you’re quite close with the survivors.”
“Well, I guess you could say so.”
At that moment, a good idea came to me.
‘Wait. Come to think of it… I might be able to use Evan as an excuse to get closer to the ghosts.’
I said it subtly.
“So… you’re curious about that platinum hair?”
“Oh, that’s…”
The ghostly maids fidgeted awkwardly, trailing off without giving a clear answer.
‘They’re dying of curiosity but pretending they’re not. Still, I can’t just let them take information from me for free!’
“I’ll tell you next time we meet.”
The ghosts looked as if they wanted to hear it right away, but I promised them for next time.
‘Surprisingly, Evan might actually be useful, huh?’
Then I heard Evan calling out to me, his voice strained.
“Evien, Evien!”
When I turned around, Evan was sprinting after me at full speed.
‘As if he’s going to catch up to me.’
I stopped and waited for Evan.
“Do you have anything else to say?”
“Mhm. Ah, thanks for the info on the ingredients last time…”
Evan spoke, panting heavily.
“You already thanked me last time.”
“Still, I wanted to say it one more time.”
He lifted the corners of his mouth into a bright smile. Perhaps from running so much, his platinum hair was a bit messy. It was a fresh smile, one that didn’t carry any malice.
‘Hmm.’
“Enough. There’s still a mountain of things I need to teach you, so brace yourself. As for Havel, just let him eat his fill.”
I said gruffly, pretending I had no choice.
“Mhm. See you later.”
Surprisingly, Evan obediently went back outside to where the survivors were gathered.
* * *
A deep, dark night. Basileon slowly opened his eyes. His head spun and throbbed, and his vision wavered hazily.
“….”
As his vision gradually cleared, he realized he was in an unfamiliar place. Basileon had opened his eyes in a pitch-black, silent chamber where he couldn’t see even an inch ahead.
‘There’s pressure on my body…’
His body was tightly bound. He realized that a gag had been placed in his mouth, making it impossible to speak.
“….”
“Are you awake?”
In the darkness, unable to see an inch ahead, someone’s voice was heard.
