The woman named Chera. Unlike the version of her I had seen just moments ago, she was now a fully grown adult.
“Could it be… you?”
Chera saw my appearance and wore a shocked expression.
“Are you perhaps the Montrose’s Young Lady?”
‘What?’
How does she know me?
“W-wait. Chera, you know the evil spirit?”
Lilith looked back and forth between me and Chera as if she couldn’t believe it.
“A little.”
“Pardon? You know me?”
When I questioned back, Chera approached me with a worried expression.
“To think that you too were cursed by it. Lady Montrose, you who were engaged to Basileon…”
“En…gaged?”
I opened my eyes wide and sat in a daze before locking eyes with Lilith. Lilith’s face was deeply crumpled.
‘I knew Evien liked Basileon, but were they really engaged?’
“You look like you don’t remember at all, Lady Montrose.”
After that, I gained unexpected information through a brief conversation with Chera.
* * *
The secret passage of the Ravenwood family. It was a secretive space that only successive family heads could use. However, Basileon only realized something had changed after entering the passage connected to the dressing room.
‘…The layout has changed.’
He moved while carefully examining the passage. What he learned in the process was that the secret passage, which only the head of the house could use, was mixed up with the passages used by the servants. The information Basileon originally knew about the passage was of no help at all. Because with every step, an unexpected space appeared.
“…Damn it.”
Ultimately, Basileon got lost. In fact, it was highly damaging to his pride as the family head, but that wasn’t what was important right now. He had to find Evien. Basileon walked and walked. Fortunately, after an agonizing wait, he found the entrance to a certain place. But as soon as he stepped inside, Basileon frowned fiercely.
The place was none other than the Room of Mirrors, which Basileon loathed to the extreme. He closed his eyes. Knowing Evien was in the passage, he had to go back in, but he couldn’t lift his feet. It was a symptom developed in his childhood. His whole body froze just by looking at a mirror.
‘….’
However, Basileon couldn’t bear the passing time and stealthily opened his eyes. Then, he saw the mirror in front of him again. And his own appearance, with different colored eyes, was visible. The red left eye and black right eye. Basileon raised his hand and covered his right eye. Whenever he looked at a mirror, he felt miserable, as if facing his past self. He unknowingly gritted his teeth.
Crash!
Before he knew it, the Flamberge flew from his hand and shattered the mirror. Fragments of the mirror fell cluttering to the floor. Basileon picked up the Flamberge with a heavy heart. In the process, a piece of glass cut his hand slightly.
“….”
Despite this, Basileon showed no change in expression, as if his sense of pain were dulled. Blood dripped from his hand gripping the Flamberge.
‘…Surely it must be its intention.’
But Basileon only entered the passage again. And as expected, Basileon came to fight with memories related to his past inside the passage.
‘Stop.’
He shook his head to clear his mind. Turning his attention back to the passage, Basileon touched the wall. An unpleasant, gloomy aura seeped from the wall into his hand. It was similar to the aura of the evil god he knew. What if Evien couldn’t get out of the passage? What if the passage restricted even the free movement of ghosts… As Basileon began to move while having those thoughts, a sound was heard nearby.
Clang—. Clang—.
“Adolf?”
Swoosh—!
A swarm of weapons flew from afar. They were weapons controlled by Adolf. But they tried to attack Basileon. Basileon didn’t avoid it. Then, the weapons stopped right in front of his nose. The weapons bowed their heads to the ground as if to apologize for trying to attack the family head.
“…It seems your master is in a very sensitive state.”
“Who’s there!”
Belatedly, Adolf, who came clattering from afar, discovered Basileon and stopped.
“Wait… Young Master?”
“Adolf. What on earth is going on?”
“What are you doing in such a dangerous place, Young Master!”
Worry was evident in Adolf’s tone.
“Evien is somewhere in the passage.”
“The evil spirit? Oh dear… The whole castle has become a mess, I don’t know what on earth is going on.”
“What is the reason it suddenly became like this…”
Adolf cleared his throat and checked Basileon’s reaction.
“Hmm. I think I might know the reason.”
“What is it?”
“Young Master. That… Soul-Capturing Mirror. The ghost maid who went inside. I thought her soul had been extinguished as a sacrifice, but that wasn’t the case.”
Adolf’s voice was timid, as if feeling guilty.
“Keep talking.”
“I ordered these rascals to watch over the mirror. But these guys hated the evil aura of the mirror, so they were pushing the duty onto each other. Just like passing a bomb!”
Adolf said, pointing at the armaments he controlled. The weapons and armor pieces hid behind Adolf, looking thoroughly dejected.
“Damn it. It’s all my fault for entrusting the mirror to these guys! In the end, taking advantage of the loose surveillance while they were passing the task around, the ghost escaped from the mirror and ran away. The root of all this is this old man’s wrong judgment…!”
“Adolf.”
Basileon cut Adolf off in a low voice. The interior of the passage was damp and humid, causing Basileon’s bangs to droop. Adolf couldn’t see Basileon’s eyes.
“You don’t need to blame yourself.”
Basileon raised his hand and patted Adolf. The cold sensation of the iron shield was transmitted to his fingertips.
“Because I… was able to survive in this family thanks to you.”
“Oh my goodness, Young Master! Blood is flowing from your hand!”
Adolf was horrified to see blood flowing from Basileon’s hand. Only then did Basileon realize there was pain in his hand.
“Ah.”
He had been so buried in intrusive thoughts that he hadn’t even realized he was injured.
Rip—.
He used the Flamberge to slice and tear a piece of the soft lining from his clothes. He used that piece of cloth to stop the bleeding and wrapped the wound for first aid. Looking at his clothes, which were already bloodstained and torn, a sense of despondency washed over him.
“….”
“Wait! Young Master. Why are you wearing clothes like that, which is unlike you…”
Instead of answering, Basileon tilted his head slightly to the side and scratched his head lightly.
“Oh my.”
Adolf almost got goosebumps.
“Young Master. Could it be that you dressed up because of the evil spirit?”
Basileon nodded silently without a word.
“Don’t tell me you’re dressing up to confess…?”
“No. I was just getting tired of the clothes I wear every day.”
Basileon smiled as if his mood had improved a bit.
“Oh dear. You’ve really gone completely mad.”
Basileon chuckled. Thanks to meeting Adolf, he was able to escape from the unpleasant solitude.
“…Adolf. Will you come with me to find Eve?”
“Yes. In fact, I came inside after hearing rumors that a few ghosts went missing.”
Just then.
“Aaaaargh—!”
A human voice was heard from deep within the passage. Basileon and Adolf looked in that direction at the same time.
“…Let’s go.”
Undoubtedly, something bad was happening. They hurried their steps.
* * *
Inside the music box. The three of us had a long conversation while trapped in the music box.
“Have you been trapped in this music box the whole time?”
“…To be precise, I am cursed. Just like how Lady Montrose became an evil spirit and Lilith was trapped in the Duke’s castle.”
Chera wore a somewhat bitter look.
‘Wasn’t she sacrificed?’
“…You are sufficient enough to be a sacrifice. Even this rebellious spirit of yours.”
I recalled the scene I had seen earlier.
“Judging by your expression, you must have thought I was sacrificed as well.”
Chera chuckled as if it were amusing.
“When Lilith came in here not too long ago, she asked the same question. Clearly, this music box must have shown you my memories.”
“Uh… Evil spirit. Did you see Chera’s past too?”
Lilith asked with a slightly nervous voice.
“Yeah. I saw a scene of a conversation between Cera and some nasty-looking man.”
“As I told Lilith, I didn’t want to become a sacrifice, so I escaped the family. To be honest, it was as good as a success, but I was eventually caught by it. Because I couldn’t leave Basileon behind, my one and only younger brother.”
