Possessor #2 Just Wants to Fangirl Chapter 98
The chairwoman’s filming permission is special.
It’s a filming permit mainly used when professors or academy staff commit corruption.
When investigating corruption cases? Naturally the villain uses their power to suppress and block access. So the chairwoman’s filming permit grants ‘authority to access all information.’
‘Using it like this, huh?’
I was just thinking it seemed wasteful since there was still time left on it anyway.
If I just present this and use the investigation excuse, I can basically enter any facility inside the academy.
Seems quite useful, so let me ask if it can be extended.
“Shall we depart immediately, Yeon Sora-nim?”
The librarian unnie didn’t even bother asking what I was investigating. But…
“Unnie, you can just call me Cadet Yeon Sora…”
“If you give me freedom of address, I’d prefer to just call you Yeon Sora-nim though?”
She’s so shy that I thought she had an introverted personality, but apparently not really. But this unnie is looking at Ki Hyeonmin standing next to me somewhat coldly.
“Is Cadet Ki Hyeonmin accompanying you too?”
“Yes.”
“I hope this time there won’t be any rude behavior like covering Yeon Sora-nim’s mouth.”
The favoritism is strong.
I’m also pretty extreme with ‘bias or out of sight,’ so I understand, but…
‘Unnie, Hyeonmin is your bias’s bias!’
Of course, I can’t say that out loud, so I just shut up and walked. But while moving through the corridor that only librarians use, unnie said something strange.
“Yeon Sora-nim, would you like me to turn off the footage?”
“What footage?”
“From here on there are pathologically many CCTVs. If you want a more secretive investigation, I can slightly manipulate things so no evidence remains.”
This unnie said something like that before too…
She treats CCTV manipulation way too casually.
“I have the permit and it’s not like I’m doing anything bad, so I think it’ll be fine.”
“Really?”
“Yes, it’d be terrible if you got in trouble.”
I need to research materials, but if I use tricks and threaten someone else’s livelihood, I’ll have bad dreams.
Hearing my explanation, the librarian unnie made a bitter smile with a dark expression.
“Well, if I get just 5 more penalty points, my service gets extended. I guess that could be burdensome.”
Penalty points…
Staff wouldn’t get penalty points.
Therefore, this unnie is doing public service work.
After graduating from the academy, to pay for the free tuition, you have to be tied somewhere for 3 years… combat types go to the Tower or rift management teams, and many non-combat types get assigned to the academy.
“From now on we’ll move by elevator. This way please.”
After boarding, unnie pressed floor B32. Floor B32… isn’t that almost touching magma level?
I was about to ask that when the librarian unnie is looking at me with a beaming smile. Somehow I get the feeling I should make small talk centered around unnie.
“So you’re doing public service work, unnie?”
“Yes.”
“How long has it been?”
“7 years.”
“What?”
Public service is usually 3 years.
When I tilted my head, unnie beamed again.
“I’m bad at following rules. Originally accumulated penalty points mean 1-year extended service, but they said if I cross the line this time, let’s just extend it 3 years.”
Wait, just how many incidents did you cause for 3 years of public service to become 7 years?
But on the other hand, I understand.
This unnie is obviously a hacker.
The hackers in <On the Brink of Destruction> are a species that when told ‘absolutely don’t do this!’ rush forward thinking ‘this is a new door!’
They’re not interested in what’s on the other side of the door.
They just want to confirm whether they can or can’t pick this lock.
Even so…
“With 5 points, you’ll be done if you break the rules just once?”
“That’s right!”
“But it’s okay to help me?”
“Ah! Don’t worry about it! I was already wondering how to fill those 5 points anyway, and if Yeon Sora-nim is uncomfortable, I can fill them somewhere else.”
This unnie seems to be quite brimming with foolhardiness among hackers. As expected, you can’t know people after seeing them just once or twice.
Ding!
“Ah! We’ve arrived!”
Getting off the elevator, there was exactly one room. The librarian unnie scanned the filming permit at the entrance, then guided us inside.
It’s a peculiar room.
In the middle of the dim room, there’s something like a glass display case with a purple stone inside.
That’s… a soul stone?
“Unnie, I wanted Great Cataclysm materials though?”
“Yes, this is it.”
“?”
A soul stone is a stone no different from an Awakened’s heart.
What I wanted was the Great Cataclysm. In other words… materials from 30 years ago, when the apocalypse first erupted in the <On the Brink of Destruction> worldview.
The librarian unnie approached the soul stone casually and began typing on a hologram window. While busily moving her hands, she gives me a separate explanation.
“There are almost no materials from that era in book or electronic form. It was a situation where survival was urgent due to natural disasters, gates, trials, etc… and above all, more than half the population didn’t even survive, right?”
That’s true.
“The survivors also only summarize the facts they remember years later, and by that time, they usually either self-glorify or develop biases, so the materials aren’t accurate. So we’re in the process of filtering out only reliable information through 1st generation soul stones… simply put, you can think of it as converting 1st generation Awakened memories into language. Ah! Done!”
Unnie smiled and sent the hologram window my way.
It’s just an ordinary search system.
“You can work with this. Everything that’s been converted to language will be searchable. Since it seemed cumbersome for you to handle directly, I made an easy-to-use interface.”
You made that on the spot just like that?
“See this bell-shaped button? If you press this, I’ll come pick you up again. Oh, and that red door is the bathroom. Then I’ll be going! Have a good investigation!”
With those words, the librarian unnie disappeared.
* * *
The search system was organized to find content by date and keyword. Thanks to that, it was really incredibly easy to access.
“Did you foresee this too?”
Ki Hyeonmin has a truly amazed face.
Lips in Gungsuh font. The expression of ‘What is this bastard?’
No wonder, since the stage of Tower 2nd floor is exactly 30 years ago Seoul, the day the Great Cataclysm occurred. The day this worldview changed from an ordinary Earth into a genre novel.
I basically found rare materials related to training right before training.
But my baby probably misunderstood that Yeon Sora predicted all this.
Overestimation isn’t good, so let me be honest.
“No, this is luck. You know how much I’ve been searching for materials, right?”
“…”
“Why?”
Ki Hyeonmin opened his mouth with a very serious face.
“How often do you think this kind of luck occurs?”
Now that he mentions it, I do seem lucky.
Could there be a luck stat I don’t know about?
…I just ended up chuckling.
“Maybe it’s because I asked? Surprisingly, when you ask, there are lots of people who’ll tell you.”
Ki Hyeonmin would never request help from the librarian no matter how many times he regressed.
That’s the difference between protagonists and extras.
Protagonists try to surpass specialists when they see them, but extras try to offload work when they see specialists. Specialist work should naturally be done by people with expertise, right?
That’s a true extra’s mindset.
“Anyway, it’s late so let’s look and go quickly.”
Searching for the Great Cataclysm day…
Although there are many broken characters, I could read the content.
Let’s see…
The owner of this soul stone was an office worker working at Gangnam Station.
The splendid forest of buildings representing Gangnam… an alley looking at that. Working in a 5-story building in a place lined with hotels and motels.
But one day, an earthquake suddenly occurred and a rift tore open in the sky.
You’d think leaving work would be natural at this point, so they packed up, but the evil team leader told them to stay for now. Even threatened that leaving at 5:55 would be marked as absence.
Meanwhile, hologram windows appeared before everyone.
[From now on, Earth will enter restructuring.]
[Only those who overcome the trials and prove their right to exist will survive.]
[Beginning tutorial]
[From now on, leaving the barrier will be considered abandoning the trial]
A random hologram, but surprisingly many people adapted quickly.
As expected, people who read web novels adapted fastest. But even people who don’t read web novels responded wisely.
The genre of ‘you die if you don’t play the game’ appearing out of nowhere is a cliché that appears extensively in comics, movies, and webtoons.
Thanks to that, many people quickly accepted the possibility this was real and didn’t do stupid things.
Only three people completely uninterested in subculture got sliced running outside the barrier. It was more amazing they crossed the green barrier that was obviously advertising not to cross the line.
Anyway.
Then, a fairy appeared from the mirror.
It roughly said fairy-of-the-tutorial-like things and threatened to blow their heads off if they didn’t believe… unfortunately, everyone in this office believed the fairy.
The three who didn’t believe were already dead.
The fairy grumbled that it finally learned a new skill but had no chance to use it, but started the tutorial.
[Tutorial – Human Proof (1/5)]
Prove you are human.
Capacity: 0/20
And suddenly a shapeshifter appeared!
A monster that copies human appearance exactly!
The people they’d been seeing at the office every day tripled.
They had to eliminate the monsters and prove they’re real humans, but only 20 people survive first-come-first-served!
‘Wait, this is interesting?’
Unfortunately, the evil team leader was a web novel veteran so he passed first. The soul stone owner…
“What should I look for?”
My baby’s voice called me back to reality.
Right, I didn’t come here to read novels.
“We need to find the fairy that appeared here during training.”
“Reason?”
“I don’t know either.”
Just because the quest window told me to?
I wondered if I should reveal the quest window’s existence while I’m at it, but that seems like something I should decide after consulting with Junhwi.
Our Junhwi is amazingly good at these calculations.
“…Understood. Should I identify this building’s location and where the fairy appears?”
“Yeah, that’s it!”
Our Hyeonmin would be disappointed if he missed out on this kind of thing.
So I continued reading the soul stone owner’s memories with a more relaxed mind.
‘This is fascinating.’
What I’m reading now are 1st generation memories.
The tutorial has a whopping 5 stages, and the difficulty is extremely brutal. It reads smoothly like this because the soul stone owner is humorous, but if I’d been at that scene, it would’ve been horrific.
The world of <On the Brink of Destruction> endured such horrific trials for a full 3 years.
A world where the world collapsed and humans killing humans was all too natural. Nations disappeared and everyone competed solely for survival.
That said, not everyone was selfish, and even in this world, there were heroes.
Some village-like things formed centered around heroes, and 7 heroes protected Seoul.
One of those heroes apparently said they absolutely couldn’t take it anymore and went to find the trial organizer. Then made some kind of deal, after which the trials completely disappeared and the Tower appeared.
The era of tower-climbing stories where only the Awakened climb the Tower arrived. These are 2nd generation hunters.
Afterward, with rifts and trials gone, society gradually stabilized, and those raised where all systems were established are exactly 3rd generation hunters.
And.
The hero who made that deal there is Ki Hyeonmin’s biological father.
