The secret story of Ki Hyeonmin’s birth.

His parents’ love story.

Family history.

This part is what infuriates me most in <On the Brink of Destruction>.

Ki Hyeonmin’s biological father and mother were madly in love with each other, but for some reason, his mother apparently went dark without even telling him she was pregnant.

The reason?

Don’t know.

Because his mother died when Ki Hyeonmin was five years old.

Anyway, Ki Hyeonmin was born.

But his biological father didn’t even know of Ki Hyeonmin’s existence.

And around that time, people of the world accumulated knowledge about the Awakened and discovered a new fact.

Among traits, there were inheritable traits.

Ki Hyeonmin’s biological father’s trait was Regressor.

That ability was inherited by a son he didn’t even know existed.

The father couldn’t reset so he crossed the River Styx forever, and Ki Hyeonmin’s mother who learned this fact belatedly apparently brainwashed my poor baby with ‘you must become the hero who saves the world.’

She dumped responsibility for something caused by two people’s weird love story onto a five-year-old child.

‘Crazy bastards!!!’

Even I, who won’t lose to anyone when it comes to offloading work, am flabbergasted. Because an extra offloading to a specialist is completely different from parents offloading to a child.

Anyway.

Ki Hyeonmin’s mother was murdered by an assassin the year Ki Hyeonmin turned five.

Who was that assassin?

Don’t know. They didn’t tell a five-year-old child such things.

She brainwashed him to become a hero following his father’s footsteps, but didn’t talk about the dangerous beings who might kill them.

And what about the scene of his mother dying?

His mother hid Ki Hyeonmin and died before him.

No, if you’re hiding a child, shouldn’t you get as far away from that location as possible? When you clearly know something horrific will happen?

The assassin even delivered a slow, painful death and left.

Because of that, as soon as the presence disappeared, Ki Hyeonmin crawled out from hiding, and his mother left a dying message like ‘you must become a hero’ with her last breath.

Wait, a skilled assassin did something like that?

Even an extra like me considers confirmation kills basic, you know?

Haa…

Anyway.

So Ki Hyeonmin grew up as an orphan, awakened at age 17 and learned his trait, and while repeating regressions learned the secret of his birth too.

But my baby is kind, so he blamed himself for this situation again.

That his father died because of him, and because of that the world lost a hero. That he must save the world.

Honestly…

This is a parenting problem.

What kind of parent in the world makes a five-year-old carry such a burden?

How could the kid not develop salvation trauma and endure this?

While I’m fuming inwardly,

“It’s late today, so we should continue tomorrow.”

Ki Hyeonmin calmly announced the day’s end.

As expected, my heart aches seeing Hyeonmin’s expressionless face.

To hand down unhappiness to such a pretty, beautiful, holy, kind, strong, perfect child…

Ugh, I should’ve been the one to birth you!

Then I would’ve raised you so happily…

Still, since this unnie possessed, I’ll make you happy!

No matter what!

Next day. Sunday.

I went to the library again with Ki Hyeonmin in tow, called the librarian unnie, and accessed materials.

Based on the soul stone’s memories, I could obtain lots of information. Since the person directly met them, naturally I could know where the tutorial fairy appears.

But just in case it’s not there even after going to that location, I need to prepare.

So I also referenced testimonies from other survivors the soul stone owner met and pulled out a complete list of places where the fairy might appear.

I thought there’d be quite a lot of work, but still, being two people, we could finish in half a day.

“I think we’re done now? Ki Hyeonmin, don’t you need to go train? I’ll wrap up the rest.”

“…”

My baby can’t skip training.

Because he needs to get strong.

But Ki Hyeonmin opened his mouth after a long silence.

“Do you think this fairy will appear in this training?”

“I don’t know either, not yet.”

“The Tower’s fairy disappeared 17 years ago.”

This is also quite a complex setting.

For 1st generation, fairies held tutorials in Seoul city, and for 2nd generation, they held tutorials in the Tower.

But 17 years ago, a system bug suddenly appeared and the fairy disappeared.

The year Ki Hyeonmin was born.

Why?

Junhwi has a theory about this, but…

That’s for later.

“Are you really leaving?”

The librarian unnie came.

Unnie guided us to ground level, and Ki Hyeonmin ran to the training grounds the moment he breathed outside air.

As for me…

‘The timing is awkward.’

A situation where I need to kill about 30 minutes.

30 minutes is such an awkward time. Too short to start something, but too long to just space out.

So I decided to have a conversation with the librarian unnie.

This unnie said some quite tempting things.

“If there’s anything I can help with, please tell me anytime!”

Actually, I have so many materials I need to find right now.

Just one of them… I decided to ask just one thing.

“Unnie, actually I’m looking for a classification system of demons.”

“Yes!”

“Looking at it, the lords of hell mainly appear as 7, right?”

“That’s right? They appear as 7 in Binsfeld too, so… But classification systems are so varied…”

“By any chance, are there cases divided into 9? I feel like I definitely heard it somewhere, but I’m not certain.”

“9… Just a moment?”

Unnie suddenly spun around.

Seems like she’s searching using some ability.

‘I can’t figure it out no matter what.’

I tried to find the 9 demons that are the mastermind’s motif… honestly, I don’t know where to start.

What I remember was search results from my previous life, that it was based on a book written by a medieval gentleman.

I can’t remember that gentleman’s name or nationality.

The demon encyclopedia had no 9-lord system.

I wondered if reading demon names one by one might spark something, but honestly… English names all look the same to me.

Abdiel, Abdusiel, Abzethibou, Abigar, Abigor…

The encyclopedia recorded information in alphabetical order, but the names are all similar… this will make me confused wondering ‘Is this it?’ even for things I originally knew.

Since I finally got an information network connection, I tried probing once—

“Aaaaah!”

The librarian unnie faced forward again.

Her face is extremely flushed with excitement.

“C-could it be! I-is this also for investigation?”

“Why?”

“There’s an incredible tracking magic on it! Just searching for this material sends an immediate report to a specific person!”

Not many people in this world know what significance ‘9 demons’ holds.

Ki Hyeonmin, Gyeon Junhwi, me…

And of course the mastermind.

Ki Hyeonmin and Gyeon Junhwi can’t use tracking magic, so naturally the one behind it is the mastermind.

They tried to catch anyone searching for motif materials!!!

‘Wow, thank god I didn’t search.’

Who knew there’d be a device sending notifications to the mastermind if you search unknowingly!

I really escaped a dangerous situation by a hair’s breadth.

At this point, the question Ki Hyeonmin asked yesterday comes to mind again.

‘Is this really luck?’

Wouldn’t ordinary possessors have searched immediately the day they realized this motif material’s existence?

Then they would’ve been caught on the mastermind’s radar.

But me?

My goal was to get close with Ha Seonwoo, mooch a free hypnosis skill, and use that to access my past life’s subconscious to find out.

I just put it off from the start intending to depend on Ha Seonwoo without lifting my own finger.

Thanks to that, I luckily avoided misfortune.

Also got good results from offloading grasshopper investigation.

Also got good results from offloading to this hacker unnie.

Maybe… this is my strong point?

The mastermind meticulously dug traps assuming the protagonist would naturally be smart, efficient, and diligent all alone…

But coincidentally, I have a tendency to depend on specialists without lifting my own finger, so I completely avoided all traps by postponing work to find decent specialists.

I feel like there were more similar examples…

I couldn’t continue thinking.

Because the librarian unnie is too excited.

“I-I’ve never seen this kind of formula! H-how! Yeon Sora-nim! C-can I try solving this?”

“If you solve it, does the tracking disappear?”

“Yes! The materials do exist! But wow… how did they do this? The knot is no joke, really only 1% is visible… Wow!”

Unnie wants to try neutralizing the tracking magic.

For me, who was debating whether to consider ‘offloading’ my strong point, this is good news.

“How long do you think it’ll take?”

“Hmm, normally it would take years…”

“It can’t be over 3 years.”

Because in the original, this world ends within 3 years.

Fortunately, the librarian unnie cracked her finger joints and displayed enthusiasm.

“If it’s me! Of course I can do it before then!”

“I’d be grateful if you did.”

“As expected, Yeon Sora-nim is my benefactor! I was already thinking lately there’s nothing fun in the world besides breaking the chairwoman’s barriers, so should I just die, but to have a project like this!!!!”

Now that I think about it, the day we first met, she said she laughed for the first time in years.

I wondered if there was some sad story… but she’d been depressed for a reason I never imagined.

Anyway, since I’ve hired a specialist, let’s exchange contact info.

“Librarian unnie, can we exchange DMs?”

“Of course!”

“Now that I think about it, I haven’t even asked your name yet, the word ‘unnie’ is just more comfortable.”

“Hahaha, it’s fine. We can get to know each other now. My name is Cheon Woori!”

Cheon Woori…

Feels like I’ve heard it a lot somewhere…

“By any chance, are you related to Researcher Cheon Ari…?”

“Ah, you know my older sister?”

I knew it.

Now that I think about it, the two don’t look alike at all, but their speech patterns, behavior, atmosphere, and this peculiar passion are exactly the same.

The mystery of genetics.

“Ah, but don’t get too close to my sister. She is my sister, but she’s a bit… scary when it comes to research. Not that she kills people or anything, it’s just that nothing exists in the world besides research, should I say…”

Ma’am, you just told me you wanted to die because there’s nothing fun to hack…

Anyway, we exchanged DMs and said goodbye.

It was a truly rewarding weekend.

Because I recruited a hacker to find information in my place!

And now for this weekend’s very last task.

My baby #1, a fortune-teller session with Gyeon Junhwi!!!
