Byeon Gudo was fast on his feet.

He truly seemed optimized for ‘stalking.’ I wasn’t sure if I should be relieved he became an investigator instead of a criminal…

The problem, however, was—

‘Cha Jeonhyeok might not be a combat-type, but Byeon Gudo’s own combat stats aren’t exactly high either!’

Furthermore, as a production-type hunter, Cha Jeonhyeok possessed insane physical strength.

And so, this happened—

“Ughhhhh!”

Byeon Gudo, who had tried to block Cha Jeonhyeok, was slammed directly into the floor.

When I reached the Sky Garden via the emergency stairs, the first thing I saw was the granite floor of the garden cracking as Byeon Gudo collapsed onto it.

“Fuck…. Seriously…. Unit Chief, why are you doing this? Get a grip….”

Byeon Gudo spat out blood but managed to grab Cha Jeonhyeok’s ankle.

Just as Cha Jeonhyeok’s fist was about to drive into Byeon Gudo’s jaw, an immense force snatched Cha Jeonhyeok’s hand.

“Don’t you touch my kid.”

It was Pi Sowon.

Blood was still gushing from her hand.

The moment Cha Jeonhyeok had tried to bite his tongue to kill himself, Pi Sowon had shoved her hand into his mouth to stop him.

I had been told I needed to aim for the moment the mental control failed, but it seemed ‘this much’ didn’t count as a failure.

Now, there was only one way.

‘I have to aim for a definitive failure.’

As Cha Jeonhyeok reached for the gun tucked into Pi Sowon’s waist, she immediately drew it and struck him over the head with the grip.

She seemed to be trying to knock him out, but—

‘They’re both A-rank hunters.’

There was no way it would work.

With eyes rolled back, Cha Jeonhyeok kicked Pi Sowon in the abdomen. Her balance broke.

Seizing the opening, Cha Jeonhyeok struck Pi Sowon’s shoulder and proceeded to stomp on her hand as she fell.

Pi Sowon let out a scream. The sound of her fingers crushing was vivid.

Just as Byeon Gudo, sprawled on the ground, tried to lunge at Cha Jeonhyeok again, Cha Jeonhyeok quickly snatched Pi Sowon’s gun and walked toward the railing of the HIB building’s Sky Garden.

That gun was the one Pi Sowon had taken from the guard; it was loaded with live ammunition.

I lunged at Cha Jeonhyeok but was promptly kicked away.

He mercilessly stomped on me a few more times.

“Ugh…!”

It hurts.

It hurts like hell!

Just as Cha Jeonhyeok was about to stomp on me once more—

Flutter!

It happened then.

Pigeons flew in from somewhere.

One, two, three….

At least five of them began peck at Cha Jeonhyeok’s head frantically. Cha Jeonhyeok screamed and began firing the pistol at the pigeons.

Bang! Bang, bang!

The bullets from the guard’s gun were fired into empty air.

Only then did I see Ma Deokho standing behind us.

Ma Deokho was continuously muttering something toward the pigeons.

“Pick his eyes out. You nasty b*stard…. What do you mean, a son of a bitch…. Dogs are so kind…. You fucker, how dare you insult dogs….”

‘Animal Communicator…!’

Well done, you b*stard!

From now on, you can wear your headset as much as you want!

While I was thinking that to myself, the gun ran out of bullets, leaving only the clicking sound of the empty firing pin.

Sensing this, Cha Jeonhyeok’s gaze turned hollow once again.

With an unreadable face, he stood atop the Sky Garden railing. He acted as though the pigeons still pecking at him didn’t matter at all.

“Kwon Ikseong… made me do it….”

It was impossible to tell if he was smiling or crying.

Though there was no emotion in his hollow eyes, his mouth moved restlessly.

“This is unfair. Kwon Ikseong made me do it all….”

This is insane.

This whole scene would be captured on CCTV.

And in the next moment.

Cha Jeonhyeok’s body plummeted below the Sky Garden railing.

Kwon Ikseong was just returning to the HIB after a long-awaited break.

‘A long-awaited break.’

Ironically, it had been a month since Kwon Ikseong last returned to his apartment.

He had finally been forced to rest only after his position became so precarious.

Since he was being investigated as a suspect, he had been placed on probation, and all Team 1 operations had been suspended.

That was when he received a call from Hong Jaegyeol.

[I think you can stop playing around now.]

“What do you mean by that…?”

[The Hunter Administration Bureau wants to conduct an investigation tomorrow. They’re probably trying to feel out the internal situation.]

“…If we hide it, that will be a problem in its own right.”

Hong Jaegyeol let out a chuckle at Kwon Ikseong’s reply.

[I have no intention of hiding it. I’m going to tell them everything exactly as it is.]

“Pardon…?”

Hong Jaegyeol, who had placed an embargo on all investigative progress out of consideration for public opinion until now, was saying something strange.

[Team 5 pulled off another one. Or should I say the ‘Gamer’ pulled off another one.]

At the word ‘Gamer,’ a crack appeared in Kwon Ikseong’s expression.

[We found evidence that an item might have been used in Yeo Hyeongse’s death. It’ll take some time for the results to come in from the autopsy room, but we plan to look for any drugs or food he consumed twenty-four hours prior, so I have plenty to report.]

In short, a crucial lead had emerged that could clear his name.

And the Gamer had delivered that lead to Team 5.

The Gamer.

Just who is that person?

Kwon Ikseong felt his heart waver at the strange emotions that had surfaced since that day’s phone call.

At the same time, it bothered him that the Gamer had brought that clue to Team 5 of all places.

Because Lee Yuji was there.

Of course, since Team 5 held the investigative authority, it seemed logical to bring the lead to them, but his intuition was screaming that something was wrong.

In particular, while taking his break, Kwon Ikseong had been thinking about the moments when his body hadn’t felt like his own.

The events surrounding those times.

‘Ah…. Team Leader Kwon.’

‘Investigator Lee Yuji. What brings you to Team 1…?’

‘Oh, I was supposed to have a meal with Investigator Ham Ina.’

Among those moments was the unexpected encounter with Investigator Lee Yuji, who said she was going to eat with Ham Ina.

Why is Lee Yuji always there whenever the Gamer is involved?

Just why—

As he was thinking this while parking in front of the HIB building.

The moment he stepped out of the car and closed the door, something fell onto the hood of his vehicle.

Wee-woo— Wee-woo— Wee-woo—

Along with the sharp blare of the emergency alarm, shards of glass from the windshield splattered toward him.

But he didn’t blink.

He stared at the man who had fallen onto his car’s hood.

“Cha Jeonhyeok….”

It was the Equipment Management Unit Chief who was supposed to be under investigation by Team 5.

Cha Jeonhyeok squirmed as he pushed himself up, then fumbled to pull something out of his shoe.

“…What are you…”

Kwon Ikseong’s brow furrowed.

Cha Jeonhyeok, having pulled himself up, reached out a hand toward Kwon Ikseong.

Kwon Ikseong instinctively took Cha Jeonhyeok’s hand.

In that moment.

Cha Jeonhyeok slipped a ring onto Kwon Ikseong’s finger.

A ring identical to the one already on Cha Jeonhyeok’s own finger.

Just as Kwon Ikseong was feeling bewildered by this sudden ‘proposal.’

Cha Jeonhyeok spoke while clutching his ribs.

“It… hurts….”

“….”

“By the way, I’m going to go try to die again in ten minutes…. So…”

The gaze looking directly at Kwon Ikseong.

The subtle choice of words and tone.

“…Please save me…”

Kwon Ikseong was clearly looking at Cha Jeonhyeok, yet strangely—

‘Save me…. Ikseong-ah….’

……Another woman’s face overlapped with his.

In that instant, his intuition provided a clear answer.

“Lee Yuji.”

Kwon Ikseong momentarily gripped Cha Jeonhyeok—no, her hand.

Then, he caught Cha Jeonhyeok, who was losing his balance and about to roll off the hood onto the ground, in his arms.

Their bodies overlapped as they tumbled onto the pavement together.

Then, Cha Jeonhyeok, with eyes dazed and unfocused, whispered into Kwon Ikseong’s ear.

“You’re even more handsome up close…. You… damn it…. You’re guilty….”
