Empress’ Game: Make-up Master Chapter 14 - Pretending to Be Crazy and Foolish
The guard’s face turned green. Both of the Eighth Prince’s hands were about to be crippled, and his own little life would not be safe either. Terrified, he loosened his grip, and the knife fell into Wu Sheyue’s hand. Wu Sheyue looked at the blade in her hand, cried out in fear, and threw it upward.
The knife traced a graceful arc through the air and landed in front of Nanny Jin’s toes, almost slicing off her toes. Nanny Jin shuddered, and her mind immediately cleared.
As if slowly waking, she opened her eyes and saw Wu Sheyue and Ning’er at the gate, entangled with a group of men near the manor gates. Wailing miserably, she lunged forward.
“Oh heavens~ what’s going on here?!”
Chaos erupted on one side, while on the other, the gathered crowd quietly parted to make way for someone.
A tall black horse approached. Riding atop it was a cold and stern middle-aged man dressed entirely in black robes. His expression alone carried an intimidating authority. The moment he saw the commotion outside the Prime Minister’s manor, his face darkened frighteningly.
Wu Sheyue had her back to the gate. She had just thrown away the knife when she saw someone riding over. She did not know who had arrived, but he was definitely someone with significant status.
So she suddenly avoided the hands of several guards and moved toward the howling Xin Zhi. Seemingly unintentionally but with neat, practiced skill, she clasped his bleeding hand and said, “Eighth Prince, this counts as interest for killing Concubine Yin. The rest can be repaid slowly later.”
Xin Zhi was startled. So it had all been deliberate? The pain in both his hands intensified, and his heart became even more panicked and furious.
The black-clad man on the horse had just arrived close by. He spoke sternly. “What is going on here?”
The guards stopped at that shout. In the instant the surroundings fell silent, Xin Zhi happened to fling Wu Sheyue’s arm away with all his strength and roared, “Your mother threw herself onto my sword! It’s not like I killed her!”
Wu Sheyue followed the force and fell to the ground with a cry of pain. Xin Zhi had not expected this fool to actually accuse him of murder. He raised his foot to kick her.
Then he heard Nanny Jin cry from behind him, “Chancellor, you’ve finally returned!”
Xin Zhi turned back and saw that it really was Chancellor Wu Hantian watching him with a dark face. He suddenly remembered the matter he had agreed on with Wu Hantian at the time.
Did this count as violating the agreement? But the wounds on both his hands hurt too badly for him to lower his head, so he viciously waved his arms at Wu Hantian. “Look! Look at what your daughter did!”
Wu Hantian’s gaze landed on Wu Sheyue’s face. His pupils shrank, and the joints of the hand gripping the reins turned blue.
Wu Sheyue sat on the ground and was not in a hurry to get up. She leisurely observed the reactions of the people around her.
That so-called father of hers seemed about to explode, the Eighth Prince was close to being ruined, and only Nanny Jin was still full of energy as she complained. Tsk, tsk.
Wu Hantian had already dismounted and hurried to Xin Zhi. “Eighth Prince! Are you hurt?”
“Let go, let go!” Xin Zhi wailed and pulled back his arm, thrusting both hands in front of Wu Hantian. “Chancellor Wu, you must give me an explanation for this!”
Wu Sheyue guessed that Xin Zhi did not dare mention the part about killing someone just now, so she stood up by herself, patted her backside, and sighed loudly. “Ah. My concubine-mother’s mourning hall is still set up. I should go back and tidy it away…”
Wu Hantian had just been about to say he would certainly compensate the prince, but Wu Sheyue’s words choked him back. If he really said that, the common people might stab his spine with their gossip.
Wu Hantian could only take a deep breath and say to Xin Zhi with a stiff face,
“Your hands – we should hurry inside and have them examined. We must not delay.”
He only hoped everyone would hurry inside and close the door. Then all matters would be easier to handle.
At that moment, a young servant wandered out from inside the gate. With his hands tucked into his sleeves, he looked to be in a good mood. When he stepped through the gate and saw the important figures at the entrance, he froze.
“The Old Madam and… and F-First Madam invite the Eighth Prince inside to discuss matters…”
“Discuss shit,” Wu Sheyue muttered. The show was nearly over, and they only arrived now.
Their efficiency was lacking.
Wu Hantian was furious inside but maintained a formulaic smile on his face. Half pushing and half inviting, he guided Xin Zhi through the gate, then turned back and said coldly to Wu Sheyue, “You! Come here.”
Wu Sheyue followed woodenly through the gate.
Wu Hantian seemed to be holding back a bellyful of anger. He waved his hand and shut the main gate.
Wu Sheyue thought, Now I’m finished. This cheap father of mine actually has legendary ancient martial arts too. She had been thinking she could be lazy and simply chop everyone to death. Looking at this now… she could not chop down a single one of them.
Xin Zhi cried out in pain the whole way. Wu Hantian told a young servant to hurry and invite a physician, then personally supported Xin Zhi beside him. But along the way, his thoughts were all on this daughter whom he rarely saw.
Although he did not often see her, this daughter was far too wrong today. The birthmark being gone was not important. But the two sentences he had heard at the gate… every word had been clear and logical, hitting the key point exactly.
And… suddenly seeing that face five parts similar to Yin Qiuming’s today, he felt inexplicably irritated.
Wu Sheyue and Ning’er followed behind. Ning’er lowered her head, her expression uneasy.
