Wedding Ending Chapter 15
Kang Seunghyun stood up. Without realizing it, Secretary Song took a step backward. Feeling stifled, Kang Seunghyun unbuttoned his suit jacket. He flung it off immediately. The black jacket hung precariously on the edge of the desk for a moment before dropping to the floor with a thud. Sitting back down, Kang Seunghyun loosened his constricting tie and tossed it away carelessly.
“How about Jaeyoon?”
Kang Seunghyun looked back and forth between the two sheets of paper.
Secretary Song spoke politely.
“From what I know, I heard that the two of you grew up together almost since childhood. Rough estimate, I believe it has been about 20 years.”
“When did we get married?”
Secretary Song felt as though he were being interrogated. Even so, he answered without a pause.
“May 20th of this year.”
“Really? It hasn’t even been that long. But he’s already received two copies?”
Secretary Song did not dare mention what had unfolded inside the car on the day of the accident. This was because Kang Seunghyun was staring down at the paper with a frosty gaze, looking as if he were about to tear it to shreds.
“Just what on earth did I do?”
“….”
Kang Seunghyun stroked under his chin. Suddenly, he snapped his head up.
“Are you married?”
“Me? No, sir.”
Secretary Song shook his head from side to side.
“Useless.”
Secretary Song’s heart dropped. Feeling a sense of crisis, he shifted his steps, pulled a laptop out of his bag, and set it down. At thirty-nine years old, Song Taehoon was not a ‘useless’ person. Kang Seunghyun trusted him, recognized his competence, and always kept him by his side. Whether that was the case or not, the current Kang Seunghyun didn’t show even a shred of interest.
“Oh?”
He stared at the desk, where a laptop similar to the one Secretary Song had set down was already sitting. Compared to its size, the items on Kang Seunghyun’s desk were quite sparse. A metallic desk lamp, a telephone, a notepad, and the laptop were everything.
As if reacting instantly, Kang Seunghyun powered on the laptop. Secretary Song’s dumbfounded expression lasted only a moment. Kang Seunghyun narrowed the space between his eyebrows.
“A password?”
This was something the current Kang Seunghyun could not know. Secretary Song moved his fingers nimbly. He successively tapped the keyboard of the laptop Kang Seunghyun was looking at.
“It’s 0520.”
It was exactly as he said. Turning his head to glance at Secretary Song’s face, Kang Seunghyun shifted his gaze. Staring at the laptop screen, he muttered under his breath.
“Our wedding anniversary?”
“Yes. That is correct.”
Secretary Song answered with a confident face. However, at the words from Kang Seunghyun that followed immediately after, he completely lost his confidence.
“Which means, Jaeyoon wanted me to see this?”
Secretary Song couldn’t say a single word. It was a fact that while Kang Seunghyun used to put his things neatly away in the drawers, he had left this out on the desk for all to see. Since he hadn’t even taken it to the company, it always sat in the exact same spot. If it was Min Jaeyoon, he would likely know roughly when Kang Seunghyun came and went. Literally, if he set his mind to it, he could look at it whenever he wanted.
Kang Seunghyun began opening various folders that were organized sequentially on the screen. And it didn’t take long before the 142-story ‘Eden Resort’ popped up.
💍
Wearing a bathrobe and drying his wet hair with a towel, Min Jaeyoon stared into the mirror. Filling the tub with water only for it to turn cold, and cooling down yet again. Consequently, by the time he stepped out of the bathroom, over two hours had already flown by.
He loved water very much. He frequently soaked his body in the bathtub while looking out the window. Furthermore, he enjoyed watching the rain fall and loved to swim.
Whir— His fine strands of hair scattered by the hairdryer felt fluffy. Min Jaeyoon fastened the buttons of the white dress shirt he wore over his cotton trousers. When he stepped out into the living room, the surroundings were as silent as a dead mouse.
“Is he still in the study?”
In the past, once Kang Seunghyun and Secretary Song went into the study, they had no intention of coming out. But wasn’t the situation different this time? He was someone who should have stormed out by now. Tilting his head to the side, Min Jaeyoon was walking toward the sofa when he turned his steps around.
The lightbulbs hanging on the tree had turned off. Christmas was over now. He never wanted to experience that chaos a second time.
Drinking a glass of water in the kitchen, Min Jaeyoon found the quiet house familiar yet slightly foreign. That was probably because the person he came with had changed. Lowering the glass onto the dining table, he dragged his slippers. Moving back and forth in front of the refrigerator, Min Jaeyoon turned his body.
Arriving in front of the study door, Min Jaeyoon hesitated. Would going in right now actually be a disturbance instead? Staring at the doorknob, he paused for a brief moment. Soon, tightly clutching the tray he held, he gave a low knock. It contained black coffee for Kang Seunghyun to drink, orange juice for Secretary Song, and cookies.
Min Jaeyoon slowly opened the door. Contrary to his worries, Kang Seunghyun, who was sitting quietly at the mahogany desk, lifted his head.
Inside the study, an eco-friendly solid wood bookshelf tailored to the wall, a classic storage cabinet, a long table, and a leather sofa sat facing each other. Because only practical items were placed there, there was a lot of empty space. For that reason, it didn’t feel stiff and instead exuded a relaxed atmosphere.
Min Jaeyoon thought he had worried for nothing. I shouldn’t have disturbed them. Secretary Song is working so hard like that…
“…?”
Meeting eyes with Secretary Song, Min Jaeyoon stepped forward with a puzzled face. Secretary Song, who was sweating profusely by Kang Seunghyun’s side, looked as if he were gazing upon a savior.
Though Min Jaeyoon was merely drawing a little closer, Kang Seunghyun completely changed his facial expression and said with a smile:
“Jaeyoon, look at this. I can write with both hands.”
Min Jaeyoon bit his lower lip hard. He felt like he knew why Secretary Song’s face had ended up in this state. Not learning the things he needed to learn… Min Jaeyoon slammed the tray he held onto the desk.
“I know that too.”
“Right. You would have known. Since you’re capable.”
Kang Seunghyun was ambidextrous. To be precise, he was born left-handed, but most objects in the world were for right-handed people. Naturally, Kang Seunghyun mastered how to use both hands. Even so, he handled his left hand more freely. Because of that, his watch was always worn on his right hand, and even when in a hurry, his left hand took the lead.
Min Jaeyoon’s gaze lingered on Kang Seunghyun’s hand. On the back of his clean, unblemished hand, blue veins stood out faintly. It was a hand large enough to completely cover Min Jaeyoon’s face. That very hand had come right up to Min Jaeyoon’s nose on that day.
Before Min Jaeyoon’s eyes, the disastrous scene that had unfolded inside the car flashed by. Min Jaeyoon’s body fluttered here and there against the violently spinning steering wheel. At that moment, a large hand flew ferociously before Min Jaeyoon’s eyes. Tilted heavily, Min Jaeyoon’s head was thrown back.
Kang Seunghyun extended his left hand out long, wrapping it around the back of Min Jaeyoon’s head to pull him into his embrace. Burying his head against the hard chest, Min Jaeyoon closed his eyes tightly. And with both arms, he held Kang Seunghyun tight.
“Thank you for the drink.”
Min Jaeyoon snapped out of his thoughts instantly. Secretary Song spoke briefly, snatched up the glass of orange juice, and gulped it down. Soon after, a convulsive, aching pain was delivered to the back of his neck, but he did not stop drinking.
As if showing off, Kang Seunghyun brandished the fountain pen he held in his right hand. It was a sweeping stroke. It was a clear handwriting style with no rough edges. However, the paper he was writing it on was the problem.
Checking the phrases written at the top of the ‘Mutual Divorce Confirmation Agreement,’ Min Jaeyoon’s pupils trembled. Without looking at him, Kang Seunghyun tossed the fountain pen to his left hand as if throwing it. This time, he engraved the three characters of Min Jaeyoon’s name.
In an instant, the ‘Mutual Divorce Confirmation Agreement’ turned chaotic. It became filled with the words Kang Seunghyun scribbled down carelessly. It was right when Min Jaeyoon was about to open his mouth. Kang Seunghyun beat him to the punch.
“Song, you can leave now.”
“Pardon? But sir….”
The actual work hadn’t even begun yet.
“Forget it. Maybe because he’s a useless person. He can’t even tell when it’s time to exit.”
Secretary Song closed his open mouth and packed his laptop. Lifting the bag he had set down on the floor, he turned his body spiritlessly. Soon, the door closed.
Min Jaeyoon quickly moved to his side and said:
“Are you going to fire Secretary Song?”
Right now, Kang Seunghyun needed a reliable helper. The memories Min Jaeyoon could fill in belonged to an extremely private realm. Secretary Song was the person who could fill in the memories of Kang Seunghyun’s public life.
“You’re doing this because you can’t remember. Secretary Song is important to you. A person who is absolutely necessary….”
“A necessary person?”
