If she found out he had followed her, she would look at him with a chilling expression that would make his entire body shiver.

She would say she’d sever their bond. There was nothing more terrifying to him than those words.

So, even if it felt like his heart was being crushed, he didn’t show it. Because he didn’t want to be abandoned by her.

But when Mirania leaned toward Donnie, his fists clenched tightly.

The tendons in his forearm split into three distinct ridges, bulging under the strain.

“You’re quite enjoyable to teach.”

Her laughter was as clear as morning dew. Her gaze was bright and serene.

All the things that had been taken from him.

Grecan’s body dissolved like dust in water, fading away into nothingness.

Once outside the mansion, Grecan bent forward, clutching his chest.

Gasping, heaving!

His hand, trembling with tension, gripped his chest as if trying to tear it apart.

Even amid his uncontrollable anger, he suppressed his breath and concealed his energy, afraid that Mirania, with her keen sensitivity, might detect him.

His skin prickled with a sharp, stinging sensation. The energy he couldn’t release churned violently within him.

Eventually, the internal fire reached his heart.

Gurgle—

Grecan, who had spat blood onto the ground, closed his furrowed eyes.

Deep wrinkles formed around his eyelids. He covered his face with both hands.

“…I can’t take it anymore.”

I want to see her.

Likewise, I want to meet her gaze.

Not only that, but I want to hold her hand.

I want to embrace her.

Furthermore, I want to kiss her.

All of it, with you.

If anyone could detect and see Grecan, they would have thought another student was attending the school.

Grecan’s movements were bold and composed, and he paid no attention to others.

That day, Kastin and Donnie couldn’t come to school due to their work, leaving only Eshi to attend.

Eshi was a boy a year older than Donnie, but he was incomparably shorter.

Working under a spider-like weaver, he spent his days in a dark house where sunlight never reached, leaving his skin pale.

Moreover, his lack of exercise left him with a skinny, frail body and short stature, making him look more like a girl.

But how lacking Eshi was in masculine charm didn’t matter to Grecan.

It would have been easier if he had ignored Eshi for being unremarkable.

Unfortunately for Eshi, Grecan had a peculiar temperament that found everyone close to Mirania irritating and worth his attention.

Grecan’s heart, filled with red-hot jealousy, was narrower than the mouth of a funnel and thinner than a sheet of paper.

Mirania and Eshi were sitting around a round table.

Grecan, occupying an empty chair with his arms crossed, glared at Eshi.

Unaware of the uninvited guest, the two were chatting softly.

“Eshi, you’re smart and understand the principles of magic well, but the problem is your ability to sense magical energy is a bit dull.”

“Ah… so does that mean I can’t become a mage?”

“For now, I’ll help you. Follow my guidance. Roll up your sleeve.”

Eshi rolled up his sleeve, revealing a soft, flabby torso without a trace of muscle.

Grecan’s eyebrow twitched, and when Mirania placed her hand on Eshi’s chest, his eyes widened like lanterns.

His jaw clenched so tightly that his skin stretched taut. He watched with bloodshot eyes.

“I’ll infuse you with magical energy. Try to guide it around your heart.”

“Okay!”

Silver magical energy flowed into Eshi’s body.

Though Eshi struggled to control the energy, sweating profusely, he didn’t lose focus even after Mirania removed her hand.

After circulating the energy around his heart a couple of times, Eshi’s face lit up.

In contrast, Grecan’s face darkened beyond measure.

“Wow! I can feel it! Is this how you store magical energy?”

“It’s my energy, so it’ll dissipate soon, but if you gather it over time, you can form a circle. I’ll go ask if there’s any magical tool outside that can help you.”

As Mirania left the room, Eshi rubbed his chest with an excited expression.

Grecan’s gaze was fixed on Mirania’s retreating figure.

Soon, his ghostly gaze shifted back to Eshi.

Poor Eshi, oblivious, muttered to himself.

“She’s so kind. Phew, I thought I was going to die from nervousness. My heart is still pounding.”

Eshi’s pale face flushed red as he thumped his chest with a fist. His expression was a mix of tension and excitement.

It wasn’t just because he felt the magical energy strongly.

Realizing this, Grecan’s expression turned vicious.

‘Disappear, you human.’

Startled, Eshi glanced around.

Grecan kept his mouth tightly shut. No sound escaped.

Eshi didn’t understand the meaning through his hearing.

Grecan had reached a level where he could convey his intentions to others without words or language.

Eshi, unsure whether it was an auditory hallucination or the voice of a ghost, was utterly terrified.

To be precise, it was Mirania who approached Eshi because he was struggling with his studies, but that didn’t matter to Grecan.

To him, Eshi was unconditionally the root of the problem.

In Grecan’s world, which revolved around Mirania, he glared at Eshi as if he wanted to kill him.

Click—

Mirania, walking gracefully, took a seat.

Grecan, who had sensed her approach beforehand, withdrew all his will and energy as if nothing had happened.

Gasp, gasp—

Eshi clutched his knees tightly, breathing heavily.

“I couldn’t find a magical tool right away. For now, I’ll help you sense magical energy better.”

Eshi, focusing on his breathing, shook his head.

“What’s wrong with you? Were you circulating the energy the whole time? Rushing like that won’t help.”

“N-no, it’s not that…”

Eshi, with a pitiful expression, fidgeted before letting out a deep sigh.

“No, I think I should go now. My, my parents told me to come home early.”

Though the sudden statement was strange, Mirania simply accepted it. She wasn’t the curious type, and her attention span was short.

Feeling inexplicably disappointed, Eshi bolted out of the school like a beast with its tail on fire.

Grecan finally felt at peace.

It was like removing a leech from his eye.

But the happiness was short-lived.

A few days later, Eshi started coming back to school.

In this world where humans were treated like livestock, even the act of attending school, a fragment of past civilization, was inherently risky.

The children who came to school, though skinny and unremarkable on the outside, had their resilience.

Eshi was no exception.

‘That human brat didn’t die and came back again.’

Grecan watched Eshi’s every move with cold eyes as he reappeared.

“It’s strangely cold.”

Eshi, his face pale, rubbed his arms as Kastin, who was eating a meal of hot water mixed with grain powder beside him, nodded in agreement.

“You feel it too? Me too.”

“Actually, I’ve been feeling this way for days.”

“Huh? Me too…”

“I’ve been having nightmares for a few days now.”

“Oh, me too!”

Eshi and Kastin exchanged glances, swallowing hard.

Grecan, leaning against the wall, looked down at them. His presence carried an oppressive aura that could stop a living creature’s heart with sheer killing intent.

Even though he had no intention of killing them and his energy was faint, it was not something ordinary boys, let alone non-mages, could endure.

Eventually, Eshi and Kastin, who had been losing sleep at night, began to distance themselves from Mirania.

Instinctively, they realized that this situation was somehow connected to her.

Eshi and Kastin only accepted assignments from Mirania and made excuses to stay away, claiming they wanted to learn swordsmanship and skills from other teachers.

But one person remained, taking lessons from Mirania.

The largest and most bothersome of the three leeches.

“Your rate of accumulating magical energy is quite fast. Even with your age making your energy murky, this level of achievement is impressive.”

Despite the praise, Donnie looked dazed.

Exposed to Grecan’s energy, he had been losing sleep.

Grecan’s gaze grew sharper, thorns seeming to sprout from his eyes. Donnie was drenched in sweat.

“What are you thinking about that you can’t even focus?”

“Well, Witch…”

“Go on, speak.”

“Do you believe in ghosts?”

“What? Ghosts?”

A brief, awkward silence followed.

“I’ll step outside for a moment. Would you like to take a walk, Witch?”

Mirania stood up, and Grecan naturally followed her out.

Mirania’s face was expressionless as she brushed aside the flowers, but there was a subtle softness in her weariness.

Grecan couldn’t take his eyes off her face. He rubbed his chest. His heart was pumping blood rapidly.

Her spiderweb-like hair, catching the faint sunlight, shimmered like jewels as she crouched to revive the withered flowers.

His fingers twitched involuntarily, and he grabbed his hand with the other to stop it.

“Wow, it’s beautiful.”

“…”

“Ah, come to think of it, this herb—when I grilled it with fish, Donaty really liked it. Seeing it like this, the flowers are pretty, too.”

“…”

“Is this also magic?”

“No.”

Donnie, who kept talking to Mirania nonstop, would have irritated Grecan under normal circumstances, but now it didn’t bother him much.
