“Explain? What is there to explain? You saw what happened.”

He ran a hand through his hair and gently turned his head away. It seemed like he was trying to hide his flushed face, but that only made it more obvious.

“For some reason, the barrier I placed on you was nullified, and as a result, the monsters were able to see you. However…”

Dazar, who had muttered that much, continued in a slightly more serious tone.

“Why did the monsters go after you instead of me as well… That’s what I find truly strange.”

“Is that really so strange?”

“Of course it is. The Siastors are born with a damned magic spell cast upon them from generation to generation. No, I suppose it would be more accurate to call it a curse.”

“What?”

I asked again with a sniffle, and Dazar slightly furrowed his brow. His face, which had been bright red just moments ago, had already returned to normal.

In other words, his irritatingly handsome face was back.

Tch. He recovers quickly.

“The blood flowing through our bodies itself attracts monsters. To them, I must look like an incredibly delicious meal. The kind of food they’ve never even seen before, something so appetizing that they’d drool just looking at it.”

“……”

“The very scent emanating from my body is like that. So whenever monsters squeeze their way out through the gaps, they don’t head down the mountain. They all come straight for me.”

And yet, they left such a delicacy alone and came after me instead…?

I was absentmindedly chewing over his words when I suddenly felt a slight movement behind me and jumped.

Gasp. Now that I noticed it, this bastard was holding me!

“…What?”

“What do you mean, what?”

I hurriedly slipped out of his arms, crawled away, then sat cross-legged in front of him.

Dazar raised an eyebrow as if he found my reaction absurd.

“Am I some kind of bug? You jumped away from me like you were terrified.”

Had he somehow learned mind-reading in the meantime?

I looked a little startled and subtly averted my gaze.

Dazar’s expression became increasingly sour.

“Haah. I actually went looking for someone like you…”

He frowned as though he couldn’t understand himself.

Now that we were sitting face-to-face, I could clearly see his face, which I hadn’t been able to see earlier because he had been behind me.

So the thing that had dropped onto my shoulder earlier really had been sweat.

I blinked as I looked at his shirt, slightly damp and clinging enough for his skin to show through.

“Let’s say what happened last time was because of that little brat. No… Maybe not?”

He muttered softly.

“Let’s run a little experiment.”

“What?”

“Come here.”

Eek.

I cautiously backed away while still sitting down.

“What are you doing? Where are you going? I said come here.”

“No, it’s just… Ah, never mind.”

Was there something wrong with my mind?

Why did that wet white shirt look so incredibly seductive?

Wondering if it was because of all the books that had filled my shelves before I was possessed, I turned my head slightly away and approached him.

This time, instead of spraying blood like before, Dazar swiftly drew strange formulas in the air.

A cluster of white light, similar to the one that had once appeared around Axion, formed at his fingertips before fluttering toward me.

The mysterious glowing light drifted toward my body, scattering sparkles.

But the moment it touched me—

Ping!

It bounced away.

“Hm?”

“As expected.”

The light continued trying to touch my body, but each time, it gradually shrank in size.

Finally, it disappeared with a whoosh.

Dazar crossed his arms and narrowed his eyes.

He remained silent for a moment as though thinking, then rested his chin on his knee and spoke.

“So you weren’t lying.”

“What?”

“I mean what you said about the Eastern Continent.”

“Uh… Why are you suddenly bringing that up?”

As I brushed the dust off my pajamas, he let out a small sigh and said,

“You said you brought that new food from the Eastern Continent, remember? I didn’t believe you.”

“Hmm. Right.”

“But if your body is like this, then it makes sense that you were able to travel to the Eastern Continent. None of the barriers surrounding the continent would have any effect on your body.”

“……”

“Then does that mean you’re the only person capable of crossing the sea?”

Hearing him say it like that suddenly made me feel as though I were some incredibly extraordinary being.

Huh? Could it be that I actually possessed some amazing ability?

“Look at you grinning. It’s not a good thing.”

“…I wasn’t particularly happy.”

“Did you know your nose twitches when you lie?”

“……”

I silently covered the tip of my nose with both hands.

Dazar snorted.

“It was a lie. And you fell for it. How stupid.”

Wow.

What a bastard.

When the corner of my lips twitched, Dazar chuckled as though he found me absolutely hilarious.

It was unmistakably a mocking laugh.

“…Then why isn’t it a good thing?”

“Hmmm. I can’t tell you for free.”

“What?”

“Why?”

“You already forgot that you did something terrible to me?”

“Ah.”

He flashed a sly grin.

It was the elegant smile he always wore whenever he was putting on an act.

“That’s one thing, and this is another, Lady Evanroar.”

Could I kill this bastard right now?

As I narrowed my eyes and glared at him, he subtly averted his gaze before speaking.

“Give me that. That.”

“What is ‘that’? Duke Siastor, your vocabulary never seems to improve. Everything is ‘that.’ How remarkable.”

He swiftly turned his gaze back toward me and twisted one corner of his lips as though he found my words ridiculous.

Then he said confidently,

“I want that soy sauce egg rice you took away from me last time.”

So he was actually obsessed with the soy sauce egg rice?

I clicked my tongue and nodded.

“Fine. Fine.”

His eyes widened slightly before he smiled happily.

It was the first genuinely sincere smile I had ever seen from him.

***

According to Dazar, if other people discovered that my body was incapable of being affected by barriers, it would cause me a great deal of trouble.

Especially…

‘Never let that Tower Master find out.’

‘Huh… Why?’

‘Have you already forgotten? He was the one who implanted the Dragon Heart of the Demon Dragon into that little brat’s heart.’

‘He did it to save Axion…’

‘How do you know that? He could have implanted it into someone who was perfectly healthy.’

Hmm.

Putting it that way did make things a little confusing.

But it was true that there had been a carriage accident involving Axion and my half-sister.

And Axion really had been injured…

‘Then why are you using him as Vanilla’s teacher?’

‘There are circumstances behind that.’

Dazar had said that and then fallen silent.

I decided to accept his words to some extent.

In the original novel, Elston had indeed been revealed to be a mastermind.

Even though right now he was overly fond of Axion, acting silly and completely lovestruck, looking foolish, being a total airhead and generally hopeless…

Wait.

Why was my assessment of him getting worse and worse?

Realizing just how harshly I was judging him, I wondered if he really was the mastermind after all.

In any case, I promised Dazar that I would never let Elston discover this trait of mine.

“Are those the Black Hawks?”

We were outside the mansion.

I pointed toward the knights clad in black armor, who were leaping across the mansion rooftops like grasshoppers.

The knights were cutting down the monsters in a single stroke.

Dazar glanced in their direction and nodded.

“Yeah. They’re trash, but sometimes they’re useful. Most days, though, they’re completely useless.”

Was he complimenting them or insulting them?

I couldn’t tell.

As he spoke, Dazar continued sending clusters of white light flying from his fingertips.

The monsters rushing toward us exploded one after another with loud bangs at a single gesture from him.

As I had already noticed, his power was quite impressive.

I was following closely behind him, wearing the coat he had dug out of his room for me earlier.

‘Huh? Where are we going? You said we were going outside.’

‘You’re going out dressed like that? The outside is crawling with those black things.’

The coat he had tossed at me seemed to be his.

It was rather cold to go outside in nothing but pajamas, so I didn’t refuse and slipped it on.

It was quite warm and cozy.

Once we went outside, Dazar stood in the center of the open grounds and began slaughtering monsters left and right while keeping me beside him.

At first, the monsters were frightening enough to make me instinctively cry out, “Eek!” or “Gasp!”

But after watching Dazar slaughter them throughout the entire night…

It became rather monotonous.

Humans really were amazing.

I had been running away from these things in terror earlier, yet now I was already getting used to them.

Then Dazar and the Black Hawks must be even more accustomed to it.

‘I’m sleepy…’

As I watched the monsters flying around beside me, I gradually nodded off while sitting on both knees on the ground.

And the next day, the Siastor estate had returned to its usual state, as though nothing had ever happened.
