“Are you angry because I came in here just now?”

I stealthily grabbed Dazar’s hand, which was still covering my eyes, and lowered it. Perhaps because I had already turned away from the mirror, Dazar readily let his hand fall.

Dazar’s face was stiff when I looked at him. Meeting his eyes, which were filled with anger, I instinctively shrank my shoulders—

“Do you even have the right to be angry with me?”

As if I would.

Who was supposed to be angry here?

He had no right to be angry with me right now.

I was the one who had every right to be angry!

My hands clenched into fists, heat surged through my entire body, and then rapidly turned cold. An anger so fierce that I felt I could stop even a train coming straight at me welled up inside me.

‘You mean he’s known all this time that Axion is Ruben?’

A Transcendent—and not just any Transcendent, but someone who served as the leader among the Transcendents—had known all this time that the baby in his estate was Ruben.

“What exactly are you scheming? You knew Axion was Ruben, didn’t you? Did you deliberately bring Axion into the estate because you were planning to do something with him?”

Dazar’s stiff expression wavered.

“You’ve been showing quite an interest in Ruben for a while now…… I suppose you’ve gathered quite a bit of information.”

He looked somewhat flustered now that his attempt to get angry at me had backfired and put him on the receiving end instead. He let out a small sigh and pointed at the floor with his long index finger.

“This is going to take a while. Let’s go downstairs and talk.”

Axion’s past was still playing out in the mirror. The woman’s shouting echoed through the room. It was the voice of Cilia’s half-sister from her memories.

I pressed my lips tightly together and followed Dazar downstairs.

“Fine. Explain yourself. Now.”

We sat facing each other on the sofas. Just moments ago, the second floor had been warm and cozy, but now, only a frigid chill flowed between Dazar and me.

“Let’s clear this up first. You barged into a place you weren’t supposed to enter. Correct?”

He still hadn’t come to his senses.

I gave a derisive snort at Dazar’s voice, which still held traces of anger.

“Why is that something we need to clear up? Ah~ fine. I’m sorry for entering a place I wasn’t supposed to enter. But your cute little bird was the one who showed me the way here. You’re the owner, so some of the responsibility falls on you, too.”

“……What? Bird?”

For some reason, instead of looking at me, Dazar stared intently at the red bird sitting on my sofa.

“You can see that?”

What was he up to this time?

I frowned and shot back.

“Of course I can see him. He even talks. Is he some kind of magical beast?”

“……You can see Ben?”

“Huh?”

I couldn’t quite make out what he muttered under his breath. Dazar looked momentarily flustered before turning to the red bird and speaking coldly.

“Why didn’t you tell me? That she could see you.”

The red bird shrugged its wings before answering.

“Hm? You never asked? I suppose you forgot that you told me not to say a word unless it concerned ‘her.’”

Even to me, that was an infuriatingly smug voice that made me want to punch him on reflex, but Dazar didn’t seem bothered.

Instead, he merely tilted his head with a serious expression, looking as though he were thinking, This is really strange.

“Even if his body is impervious to external forces…… for someone who is not even Morocanil, who shares the same world, can see……”

He continued muttering, and he seemed quite seriously troubled, but I had no time to indulge him in his worries.

“Hey. That’s not what’s important right now. I already apologized for the thing you wanted to clear up. Now it’s my turn.”

I glared at Dazar and continued.

“When did you find out that Axion is Ruben? Did you deliberately lure us into your estate? Using Elston? What were you planning to do afterward? What exactly are you scheming?”

“……Wait, wait.”

Dazar frowned and raised both hands slightly. It was a gesture that practically said he surrendered.

“Fine. I understand that you were shocked to find out that that little brat is Ruben. And I’m sure it was shocking to learn that I already knew, too. But how about asking one question at a time?”

“……Then answer the first one. When did you find out that Axion is Ruben?”

“It hasn’t been that long. Since I ran into you at the cemetery?”

The cemetery?

If he meant the cemetery……

“When you pointed a very threatening weapon at me.”

“That wasn’t a weapon. It’s called a rattle.”

“Whatever. That rattle weapon.”

I folded my arms firmly across my chest.

That was when I first encountered Dazar. Back then, I hadn’t even realized that this bastard was going to be my in-law.

“I had just arrived there while tracking Ruben’s traces. I had only just discovered the residence of Ruben’s birth mother…… that is, your half-sister. I was able to deduce it through this mirror.”

“……”

“But she was already dead. I didn’t know where the child had disappeared to. And then you appeared with that brat.”

Dazar’s eyes darkened.

So that meant he had been searching for Ruben ever since Axion was born.

“To be honest, I was confused at first. Because of the Demon Dragon’s Dragon Heart residing in that brat’s heart. But after you entered my estate, I became certain. That little brat was Ruben.”

“Then why didn’t you eliminate Axion…… even after finding out that he was Ruben? You’re a Transcendent.”

“That’s right. I’m a Transcendent. But I have no intention of harming that little brat.”

What was this, like saying a cat hated fish?

“How does that make any sense? There’s no reason for a Transcendent not to eliminate Ruben…… Ah. You’re one of Ruben’s Followers, aren’t you? Aren’t you?”

There was only one reason I could think of for why Dazar, a Transcendent, hadn’t eliminated Axion.

Based on everything I knew so far, there was only one possibility.

Dazar was one of Ruben’s Followers.

Otherwise, it simply didn’t make sense.

Dazar raised an eyebrow.

“I told you I’m not. I thought we’d already settled that.”

“That was before I knew you were aware of Axion’s identity.”

Dazar was right. Even Morocanil had said that he wasn’t one of Ruben’s Followers.

But what other reason could there be?

Why would a Transcendent leave Ruben alone like this?

Dazar pressed his lips together and fell silent.

“……”

He looked as though he were deep in thought.

I felt a strong urge to press him for an answer right away, but I decided to relax.

Dazar’s expression was quite serious, after all.

At last, he opened his mouth.

“……Yes. You’re right. I did deliberately keep that brat by my side. But you were the one who started it. You came to me with food, remember? This was entirely a coincidence.”

“……Hmm. Fine. Let’s say I accept that. Then why did you keep him by your side?”

“I can’t tell you that, but if I don’t explain the reason, you’ll believe I’m one of Ruben’s Followers. And you’ll think I intend to harm you and that little brat.”

“Of course I will. I’m planning to leave the estate as soon as I return from the island. Unless you can give me a reasonable explanation.”

It was true.

I had already made that decision the moment I learned that he knew Axion’s identity.

Dazar gave a heavy nod after hearing my words. His reaction seemed to say that he had expected this.

Gulp.

I swallowed.

I had deliberately thrown out the threat that I would leave, but Dazar didn’t seem to have any intention of locking us up or anything. He didn’t seem anxious or desperate to stop me, either.

If anything, he looked strangely detached.

After a brief pause, Dazar suddenly began talking about himself.

“You remember that I’m a Transcendent who remembers my past life, that I lived in a previous world, right?”

“Yes. I remember.”

“It happens occasionally for Transcendents to remember their past lives. And there’s only one reason they remember their previous lives. When their previous world was devoured by Ruben.”

“……!”

The world…… was devoured by Ruben?

“Then does that mean the world…… was destroyed? And you…… died at Ruben’s hands, too?”

“That’s right. Everything was destroyed. I essentially gave my life to Ruben as well.”

Everything was destroyed.

Dazar spoke of it so casually, but what he was saying was anything but casual.

The destruction of a world.

The end of the world.

It must have been a horrifying end, one I couldn’t even begin to imagine.

It must have been a huge shock for Dazar. For someone who had the duty of protecting the world as a Transcendent to witness the destruction of that very world……

As I thought about it carefully, I started to feel just a little sorry for Dazar.

Just as I was beginning to feel a little sympathy for him, Dazar casually said with an expressionless face,

“And I was the one who led that world to its destruction.”

“……What?”

The sympathy I had been directing toward Dazar came to a complete halt.

No.

It retreated.

“I joined hands with Ruben and offered the world to him.”

Oh my goodness.

What in the world had that insane in-law of mine just said?
