“Huh?”

I watched the customer continue eating as if nothing had happened, then tilted my head and resumed climbing the stairs.

‘Well, maybe they were just curious about who was going up to the second floor…’

I tried to come up with reasons to understand them.

‘Perhaps they were simply intrigued by someone who looked like an outsider.’

I stopped in front of the locked door.

“I had such a hard time getting this open back then, too…”

After raising Kais’s affection level, I’d finally received an access card from him several months later, allowing me to come and go from his office freely.

Of course, I hadn’t visited often since it was his workplace, but I’d been happy because it felt like proof that we’d grown close.

‘So resetting everything really is sadder than I expected.’

I was the only one who still had all those memories.

Swallowing my disappointment, I tapped the access card against the office door. With a soft click, it opened.

“Excuse me—”

I poked my head through the open doorway.

Unlike the neat tavern on the first floor, the office looked as though someone had started tidying up but given up halfway through.

It was enormous.

One wall was lined with bookshelves packed full of books, while the opposite wall was decorated with a row of framed paintings.

On the long glass desk that looked like it was meant for work, piles of disorganized documents, pens, and stamps lay scattered about.

‘Is he not here?’

I walked closer to the leather sofa that appeared to be intended for visitors.

‘The sofa’s empty… huh?’

Something was draped over the armrest.

A foot wearing a dress shoe.

I approached, grabbed the back of the sofa, and peered down.

A man was asleep with a half-open book resting over his face.

I blinked as I looked at the man stretched out on the sofa, his long, model-like legs clad in dress pants.

“Kais?”

I called his name softly.

‘Did he return to the office and fall asleep in the meantime?’

I watched the veins on the back of his hand twitch and waited quietly for a response.

But the only sound in the office was his muffled breathing beneath the book.

‘I don’t want to wake someone who’s sleeping.’

There were days when you were so tired that you didn’t even want to lift a finger.

‘I’ll have to find a house another time.’

I gave up without hesitation.

After all, it was only natural to stay at Siad’s house until the event where I received Kais’s business card appeared.

Deciding to impose on Siad for a few more days, I picked up a neatly folded blanket from the side.

Then I tiptoed toward Kais, careful not to wake him with my footsteps.

I was about to spread the blanket over him and leave when—

“Whoa!”

My wrist was suddenly grabbed and yanked backward.

I barely managed to regain my balance before looking down again. Above the book that had slipped to one side, I saw a pair of black eyes staring at me.

Kais’s half-lidded eyes blinked slowly.

“Hello!”

We’d already met that morning, but seeing him face-to-face again filled me with excitement.

Kais removed the book covering his face, revealing the corners of his mouth curling upward.

“Hello, visitor. You’re back sooner than I expected.”

“Are you awake?”

“Thanks to you.”

He pinched the blanket between his fingers, lifted it slightly, then let it fall back into place before speaking.

“How thoughtful. So, what brings you here?”

“Oh, I came to look at houses! If you’re tired, we can talk another time.”

At that, he sat up fully and patted the sofa.

“Sit down. I’ll get the paperwork.”

“Okay!”

“Help yourself to the refreshments in front of you, too.”

Kais trudged over to the long glass desk and began sorting through the scattered documents.

I quickly sat down on the sofa, poured myself some water, and picked up one of the biscuits in front of me.

My stamina bar, which had decreased a little during my morning walk, shot right back up.

“So, you came to look at houses.”

“Yes!”

Kais flipped through the paperwork before finally sliding several sheets with photographs attached across the table toward me.

There were all sorts of properties: a magnificent mansion, a three-story country house with a garden, a four-story tower straight out of a fairy tale, and even a cottage that looked perfect for someone living alone.

“Pick whichever one you like, dear customer. I’ll lend you as much money as you need.”

A professional smile appeared on his face—one he would never normally wear.

Feeling as though I were sitting on a bed of nails, I carefully examined the photographs on the documents.

I looked at pictures of the exteriors, interiors, and even the floor plans.

But the one piece of information I was most curious about was missing.

The price.

“Kais, how much does each house…”

“It’s more important to figure out which house appeals to you most. Let’s look at the actual properties first, then we can talk.”

“Huh? The actual properties?”

Were we going to visit the houses in person?

Had Kais originally shown people around the properties himself? My memory was a little hazy…

As I wondered whether he meant we were going to see them right now, Kais chuckled.

“Don’t worry. We’ll look at them right here.”

Snap.

Kais snapped his fingers, and a floating, square-shaped cube appeared beside him.

“With this.”

A red dot appeared on the cube he pointed to.

“Um…”

“Look at it. Don’t take your eyes off it.”

I followed his instructions and stared at it intently. Gradually, my field of vision turned white.

It was a sensation I’d experienced once before, when I first arrived in Node.

I felt as though something were sweeping me away. The moment I blinked—

I was standing in front of the gates of a huge mansion.

Creeeak—.

The gates opened by themselves without anyone touching them.

“Ah!! What a surprise…”

I let out a shriek before I could stop myself, then quickly calmed down and stepped inside.

A vast lawn stretched out before me, complete with a swimming pool and parasols.

‘I could put a big swing in the yard here.’

After taking my time admiring the grounds, I approached the building, and the front door suddenly loomed right before me.

Then it swung open automatically, revealing a living room as large as a school sports field.

Beside the living room was a kitchen equipped with a refrigerator large enough to hold ingredients for ten people and an oven. Two staircases led to the upper floor.

At the end of the hallway, there was even a bathroom with a marble bathtub.

There was also a study as vast as a library, not to mention an expensive LD player tucked into the corner of one of the rooms…

“Wow.”

Cleaning this place alone would be a nightmare.

By the time I’d finished exploring the enormous mansion, including its bedrooms, study, and attic—

Snap.

Kais snapped his fingers again.

“Okay, next.”

The cube rotated, and a new illusion unfolded before my eyes.

It was so vivid that there was practically no difference between this and seeing the properties in person.

‘On the tablet, I only saw pictures. This is practically a real-life property tour.’

Still unable to close my mouth in amazement, I continued looking through the remaining properties.

First came a three-story country house that made me curious about what it would be like to live somewhere like that, followed by a tower with a split-level layout, and finally, a small but cozy cottage.

“Now, which one would suit our dear customer’s taste?”

Kais’s low voice sounded in my ear, and I returned to reality, sitting on the sofa.

I blinked a few times, still dazed, then quickly grabbed the paperwork.

“I want this cottage!”

“The cottage.”

Kais replied in a noticeably lower voice.

“Yes!”

“Are you serious, dear customer?”

He let out an incredulous laugh, leaned back against the sofa, and looked at me askance.

“You’re passing up all those other nice houses?”

“I’m going to live alone anyway. A big house would be difficult to clean.”

“You could just hire people to do that.”

He said it as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. If I’d given him a clueless response like ‘Oh, really?’ I would’ve been dragged right into his trap.

“I prefer taking care of things myself rather than relying on other people.”

“Then wouldn’t a house with a large garden be more rewarding to maintain?”

“I prefer a little vegetable patch!”

I smiled brightly at every casual remark Kais threw my way, nipping any attempt to steer the conversation toward taking out a loan in the bud.
