Chapter 130

Side Story

Just as Cesare was about to take a sip of tea—

“Ugh!”

He made a face and gagged.

Everyone in the room turned to look at him.

“Duke, are you okay?”

“…Ahem. It’s nothing… Ugh!”

Once he noticed the bad smell, he couldn’t stand it.

Cesare jumped to his feet.

Everything in the room suddenly smelled awful to him.

With a pale face, he rushed out of the room.

The others just stared, confused.

What’s wrong with him…?

****

Cesare’s morning sickness revealed my pregnancy.

Oh my gosh, a husband who gets morning sickness for his wife? Isn’t this every woman’s dream fantasy?!

Thanks to that, I didn’t have to attend any annoying social gatherings.

No more noisy noblewomen.

I love it.

“You look happy, My Lady.”

Shannet smiled brightly.

Honestly, after working non-stop at the estate, coming to the townhouse felt like a vacation.

On top of that, I was pregnant, and my husband was the one dealing with the morning sickness. My body and mind both felt at ease.

So, I made a decision.

“I think I’ll try cooking.”

“…What?”

Shannet’s smile instantly shattered. She looked at me with a nervous expression.

“What… did you just say?”

“Exactly what you heard. I want to cook something for Cesare.”

“…I disagree, My Lady.”

I’m trying to be a good wife, and she’s against it?

“What if you get hurt?”

Shannet grumbled, looking full of doubt.

Listen, Shannet. Before I came here, I studied cooking. I watched tons of videos and learned all sorts of recipes. I even made food for myself!

The less I cook, the more special it is when I do cook.

And imagine—he’s dealing with morning sickness, and I make him a home-cooked meal? Heheheh.

“Just trust me.”

“My Laaady!”

I shook her off and declared with determination, like a general marching to battle.

“Tell the kitchen. I’ll be there soon.”

“Do you really have to do this?”

Pushing Shannet aside, I opened the kitchen door.

The head chef and the kitchen staff all looked at me with nervous expressions.

“Uh… My Lady…”

The head chef carefully called out to me, probably to stop me.

But I ignored him and washed my hands thoroughly, making sure they were squeaky clean.

“Cleanliness is the most important part of cooking. They say starting is half the battle, so don’t worry too much. Today, I’m going to make lemon sherbet and orange tart. Cesare has been craving sour foods lately, right?”

“I can prepare it for you myself, My Lady.”

“No, no. This time, I’ll do it myself.”

First, I needed to peel the oranges.

“…You’re holding the knife wrong. You’ll cut yourself.”

The head chef looked like he was about to cry.

“Oh, really? Then, can you peel the oranges for me?”

The head chef quickly took the knife and oranges from my hands.

Wow, I guess I forgot how to do it after such a long time. I didn’t know there was a proper way to hold a knife.

“Head Chef.”

“Yes, My Lady.”

“What kind of food is good for morning sickness? Cesare hasn’t been able to eat much lately. Is there anything besides sour food? He doesn’t even seem to handle soup well.”

“It would be best to avoid seafood for now. That goes for you too, My Lady. And nothing raw… Also, too much sugar isn’t good either.”

“Really? Ugh, having a husband who loves me too much is exhausting. I have to cook for him myself now. He must love me so much that he’s getting morning sickness in my place. Right, Shannet?”

“…Yes.”

While I was eating just fine, Cesare couldn’t swallow anything with even the slightest fishy smell.

I can’t believe something like this is happening to me—just like in a novel.

Hah, Cesare should’ve loved me just a little less.

“He’s lost a lot of weight lately, and I’m really worried. What if he collapses?”

“…That won’t happen.”

Shannet let out an awkward laugh.

“Are the oranges peeled? Then I’ll start making the dough—”

Just as I was rolling up my sleeves—

“My Lady! His Grace has returned home!”

“Really?”

I dropped everything and ran out immediately.

He must be so exhausted after attending meetings at the imperial palace in this condition!

Ever since my pregnancy was revealed, I had barely gone outside, but Cesare was still commuting to the palace every day—while dealing with my morning sickness.

“My Lady! You shouldn’t run!”

Shannet scolded me as she hurried after me.

Behind us, the kitchen door slammed shut with a loud bang! as if to say, Don’t come back.

“Cesare!!”

“Daphne.”

Cesare opened his arms wide for me.

I hugged him tightly and asked, “How was your day? Did you eat anything? Ugh, why did you have to get morning sickness now of all times? Terrible timing. You need to eat something.”

“I’m fine.”

“I’m worried you’re going to collapse at this rate.”

Cesare gave me a weak smile, his face pale.

His complexion looked awful. That’s why I was going to cook for him myself.

“Do you want to eat something?”

Cesare shook his head, looking exhausted—but still adorable.

Ugh, my poor Cesare!

“Then do you want to lie down?”

He nodded.

“Shannet, we’re going to the bedroom. Tell the head chef we’ll have to delay the cooking.”

“Yes, My Lady! Please, go ahead!”

With Shannet’s encouragement, I led Cesare upstairs to our bedroom.

He looked like he needed rest more than a bath, so I gently guided him to lie down on my lap.

As he closed his tired eyes, I softly ran my fingers through his hair.

“I hope your morning sickness gets better soon.”

“…I’m just glad you’re not suffering.”

My heart melted. He couldn’t even eat properly, yet he was still thinking about me…

Cesare placed a light kiss on my still-flat stomach. For some reason, I felt a bit jealous of the baby.

“Hey, don’t make your dad suffer like this! Ugh, being so stubborn already means you’re definitely going to be a boy.”

“…I want a girl.”

Cesare murmured weakly.

Of course, daughters were a dream come true for most fathers.

“…I wouldn’t want a son who takes after me. If he takes after you, maybe.”

“What’s wrong with a son who looks like you? I’d love that.”

“I wouldn’t.”

Cesare said firmly before closing his eyes again.

What am I going to do with him?

“You have another meeting tomorrow, right?”

Cesare frowned.

“Yeah. I have to see him again.”

Him probably meant Gabriel.

“What about you? What are you doing tomorrow?”

“Hmm… I want to go shopping for baby clothes. When do you finish work? I’d love to go together.”

“Did the doctor say it’s okay?”

“Yes. Thankfully, the baby is doing well. I just have to be careful and not walk around too much.”

“…I should be back by three in the afternoon. How about we go then?”

“That sounds perfect!”

Cesare let out a long breath and rested his head against my stomach.

His breath tickled my skin. I felt both worried for him and completely in love with him at the same time.

I gently patted his back.

“What did you do for fun today?”

“I ate well, slept well, and relaxed. The doctor said the baby is really healthy.”

“…That’s a relief.”

“I was going to cook today, but… I didn’t expect you to come home so early.”

“Cook?”

“Yes. I wanted to make something you could eat, but…”

“No.”

“…Huh?”

Cesare’s tone was firm.

“I don’t want you to do anything.”

“Cesare?”

“Please, just rest… for my sake.”

He whispered softly.

Wow, Cesare really doesn’t trust me, huh?

“Who knows? Maybe I have an amazing hidden talent for cooking!”

“Daphne.”

“Yes?”

“When was the last time you even peeled an apple?”

“…Um, never?”

“And have you ever used a knife?”

I didn’t even get the chance to today.

“Ahem….”

“Exactly. I just want you to lie down, eat the food other people make, and relax.”

Should I feel flattered or insulted? This was confusing.

I pouted, and Cesare kissed me.

His hands, strong yet gentle, held me close.

He stroked my cheek and smiled sweetly, his eyes full of love.

“Just stay still and behave. That’s the best way to help me, okay?”

Well… he’s made up his mind. Hmph.
