“I-It’s okay! This is enough!”

Luize snatched the nightgown from his hand and briskly laid it beside the bed. Edward watched her back and chuckled mischievously. In fact, if Luize had said she needed more, he was thinking of fetching a towel from the bathroom.

“I’ll sit here, so Edward, you lie down on the bed.”

“Yes.”

A relaxed smile was on his face as he headed towards the bed. Only then did Luize realize she had fallen for his trick.

“… You’re terrible.” She muttered with a sulky face, leaning against the bed.

In the meantime, Edward quietly lay down and covered himself with the blanket. It was an unfamiliar feeling. Since leaving the palace, this was the first time someone other than assassins, spies, and his bodyguards stayed beside his bed.

“Did you close your eyes?”

“I did.”

“Then what shall we talk about?”

At Luize’s question, Edward’s lips curled up. “How about telling me old stories? I’ve never heard much about your past, especially your time with Maxion.”

“I have a lot to say about that. The first time I met Maxion was…”

Edward sneakily opened his eyes to see her hair, which lay beside the bed. Her hair was spread out on the bed. He turned towards her and tapped fingers. Luize was so engrossed in her story she didn’t react. He rolled her hair around his fingers. The thin, long hair slid softly over his fingertips.

“…So the apple pie made with bread is something I learned from the lady at the bakery nearby. Maxion said it was the only thing I made that was edible. Are you listening?”

“Yes.”

Luize continued her story. Even when her story ended, Edward was still awake.

“…And then I met Edward.”

“You must have been very lonely.”

“Yes. That’s why I’m so happy now.”

“I’m glad.”

“Can I ask about your childhood, Edward? Ah, only the parts you want to talk about.” Luize added cautiously, remembering his past was different from that of ordinary people.

“I don’t remember much when I think about the past. I pride myself on my memory, but my childhood memories are faint as if there were holes in them because I was so busy.”

“Isn’t that a big deal?”

“Maybe it’s not important if I forgot. But if there is something I remember…”

He shared surprisingly peaceful and minor pasts. Unlike Luize, he spent more time with nannies and servants than his parents, but everyone was kind to him, and he was the last to know about a secret romance between a knight and a maid, showing how oblivious he was in that aspect. He added that he became more curious about the outside world as he got older, though he couldn’t roam freely. However, he tried to recall as much as possible about the time Luize’s mother was his teacher.

“…That’s it.”

“…”

“Miss Luize?”

Edward got up and approached Luize. Moonlight swirled in her hair by the window. Her eyelids, still swollen from crying all day, seemed to have fallen asleep already.

“Aren’t you too defenseless in a man’s bedroom?” Edward smiled and got down from the bed to carefully pick her up. It seemed he had to sleep on the sofa tonight. Whether it was the bed or the sofa, it seemed he wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight either.

“…I hope you don’t think too comfortably of this.”

He laid her down on his bed. As he reached for the blanket on the other end, Luize’s lips moved slightly.

Umm…”

“…?”

Edward froze. If she woke up now, it wouldn’t be strange if she misunderstood his intentions.

“Blanket…”

As Luize groped the bed in her sleep, Edward softly laughed and pulled the blanket over her. He was about to straighten the blanket when tak. Luize’s left hand landed on his right arm.

Edward looked at her hand in surprise, and the moment Luize pulled his arm towards her, he almost lost his balance on the bed but managed to prop himself next to her pillow. He barely leaned over Luize to prevent waking her up.

Luize covered herself with his arm as if it were a blanket. Their faces were so close that even a slight movement would touch each other. It was hard to breathe, let alone speak.

As he hurriedly tried to get up, Luize firmly grabbed his arm again and placed it over her. Her grip was surprisingly strong for a swordswoman.

“…This is a big deal.”

He propped his head with his left hand and lay down beside her. Since his arm didn’t slip out, she looked content and fell back asleep. Her peacefully sleeping face seemed quite cute. He feels like this often when he looks at her these days.

“I guess I’m in pretty big trouble.”

He often found himself wanting to see her face, especially during the long nights above. He had wanted to wake her up in a room full of sunlight in the morning. How hard he had tried to resist that urge.

Edward could roughly tell the condition of his squad members through the magic stones they possessed. It was a feature installed to identify and rescue members who might be in dire need or severely injured. He didn’t wake her up that morning and didn’t accompany her because he checked her condition right before knocking on her door and couldn’t bear to wake her up from her deep sleep.

“How can I let you go like this?”

As long as she wouldn’t get hurt, he wanted to keep her in his sight. In any case, it wasn’t a good place to spend a long night with her, so he planned to enjoy the situation more before heading to the sofa. He wanted to fall asleep there, but he didn’t plan to act on it.

Because Edward had been suffering from severe insomnia, and after spending the previous night outdoors and being busy with investigations from the morning, he was extremely tired. So, he fell asleep there, which was definitely not his intention.

* * *

The morning sun flooded the room through the wide windows.

Umm…”

A warm, soft, and flat something was wrapping around her from behind. Pleased with the sensation, Luize leaned her head against the sturdy forearm under her pillow. Responding to her movement, the arm wrapping around her tightened its hold before stopping.

Wait, a forearm? Luize suddenly opened her eyes and looked down to confirm the arm wrapping around her. The firm, muscular, and soft fair arm was very familiar. Her face instantly flushed red as she realized the situation.

Silently screaming, Luize tried to untangle herself from his arm when a sleepy, distinctly male voice murmured near her ear.

“…Ah, so it’s come to this.” His tone was languid as if he was still shaking off sleep.

As Edward loosened his grip, Luize hurriedly escaped from his embrace and sat up on the bed. A flawless, handsome man, even in the morning, propped his head with his hand, lying down, and smiled at her.

“Did you sleep well?”

“…!”

“Thanks to Miss Luize, I think I slept well.”

His well-defined muscles were exposed under the blanket that covered him up to his waist. The brilliant morning sunlight softly fell on his skin, making him look like a god of beauty.

“E-Edward, to think you’d be such a scoundrel.”

“That’s unfair. It was Miss Luize who grabbed me and didn’t let go.”

“M-M-M-Me?!” Luize hurriedly escaped from the bed.

Edward got up from his sleeping position. His movement caused the white blanket to slide down, covering his lower body. His half-naked upper body was starkly exposed under the sunlight. He raised his right hand and slowly ran it through his hair.

“I’m sorry if I surprised you. I meant to go to the sofa after laying you down, but you wouldn’t let go of my arm, so I ended up falling asleep while trying to detach myself.” The latter part was a lie. To be precise, he had fallen asleep after watching her sleep. It wasn’t intentional to hug her in his sleep, but it led to a pleasant morning.

“Gosh. This is crazy. I must be out of my mind!”

“Still, thanks to Miss Luize, I’ve had a good sleep for the first time in a while. It seems Miss Luize aids my deep sleep. Do you have any other hidden abilities?”

“I don’t have anything like that.”

Under the bright sunlight, her face turned as red as a tomato, clearly visible to him. Edward couldn’t help but smile at her embarrassed state.

Luize spoke in a flustered voice. “I- I’m going to morning training today. So, Edward, you rest. What have I done? I’m sorry. Ah, see you later. Anyway, I’m going now.” Luize rambled before fleeing the room.

“Regrettably, I’ll have to say goodbye like this. It’s not the situation to get up.”

He couldn’t move the blanket covering his lower body as he sat up with one knee raised.

Thud. Behind Edward’s voice, the door closed quickly. He lay down again on the bed that still smelled of Luize. The smile never left his lips.
