The memory of Saeri’s liberation began with a voice saying.

“The world must be perfect after all. How beautiful.”

Crossing her arms and gazing pensively at the sky, Saeri concluded. There were many things that occupied a place beneath the sky that was like nothingness.

Fields as brilliant as her eyes, streams of water flowing through them, and souls twinkling like stars in the night sky.

This was the beginning of Tanato, a perfect world created by Saeri.

As she gazed at the world with a satisfied smile, Saeri’s eyes turned fierce. She jumped to her feet as if she were having a seizure.

“Shit…, they’re back.”

Saeri’s gaze landed on the place where the spirits were gathered. Black auras mingled amongst the shimmering lights of the Milky Way.

Seeing their presence, Saeri scratched at herself with her nails. Horrible black spots formed on her body.

The black energy ate souls. Evil created evil, and it grew in size.

Saeri snapped her fingers, using her thumb and middle finger. The black energy that had arisen in the world vanished in an instant.

When the auras that had disturbed the world were gone, Saeri’s body returned to its original state without a single scar.

“Disgusting bastards. I’m sick of them.”

Saeri rubbed her throbbing head as she caught sight of Yeon-young and Ryu Won walking through the fields.

The sight of them dutifully tending to the spirits made Saeri smile.

“Not enough room for anything but the beautiful.”

Saeri’s gaze locked on Yeon-young. She paused for a moment, noticing the smile on her face.

Tapping her chin with her index finger, Saeri pondered, then decided.

“I should probably give her one more warning, just in case.”

Saeri took to the sky like a free bird, and her flight to them was as excited and full of anticipation as a child on a playground.

There was a moment of darkness, and the scene in her memory shifted to another.

She was beneath an immaculate temple. Saeri sat cross-legged on the altar, staring down at someone.

The air was so thick that she could barely breathe.

“My sister-in-law said. You mustn’t let the spirit control you.”

At Saeri’s feet were Yeon-young and Ryu Won, her gaze fixed on Yeon-young. Yeon-young had a face that seemed to take it all in stride.

Saeri’s toes clicked regularly, as if she was dissatisfied with her demeanor. Ryu Won leaned his upper body forward, poised to jump at any moment.

Saeri grabbed Ryu Won’s wrists with both hands and dragged him behind her.

“Tell me. What’s the matter with you?”

“…As I told you last time, Snarl also coexists….”

“Enough. I have only one order: the Snarl will be destroyed upon discovery.”

“But the purification…!”

“You make a fool of me, I can’t keep the Snarl hidden without it.”

“…….”

“You should have gotten down on your knees and begged, then I could have made you…”

Saeri cut Yeon-young off. Her eyes were colored with betrayal. At the same time, she looked hurt. Saeri ran a hand through her hair roughly and continued.

“Did you know?”

Saeri asked Ryu Won. Ryu Won nodded once, blocking Yeon-young’s path. He seemed to have anticipated Saeri’s reaction.

Saeri let out a jilted sound, revealing her vulnerability.

They had a secret, and she didn’t know anything about it.

“You deceived me all this time. You’ve been deceiving me all this time.”

Her eyes flashed with uncontrollable anger. Swallowing a shaky breath, Saeri closed her eyes.

Then, as if making a decision, she regained her composure.

“You have no regrets about your choice, do you?”

Yeon-young answered the question with a nod. Biting her lower lip tightly, Saeri raised the spear strapped to her back, her golden eyes glowing with a cold, determined light.

It took only a moment for Saeri’s spear to pierce Yeon-young’s heart. There was a moment of silence, and then Yeon-young’s body began to shatter.

Ryu Won’s screams pierced Saeri’s ears. At that moment, she felt her chest heat up.

Saeri tried to ignore the emotion and blew the pieces of Yeon-young out of the temple. She left the temple, leaving behind Yeon-young’s crumbling form on the floor.

That was the end of the second memory. Once again, the surroundings darkened and another memory came.

In the ruined temple, Ryu Won and Saeri were talking.

“Why did you come back?”

“To get rid of this place.”

“You’re not sorry for what you’ve done, are you?”

“You could have listened to the whole story.”

His harsh voice stopped Saeri in her tracks. Saeri turned around, one corner of her mouth raised in disbelief.

He glared at her with a distorted face. Ryu Won’s resentment toward her was unmistakable.

Why did you do that?”

“I didn’t interfere then because Iris didn’t want to. She was trying to bring you back, not to deceive you.”

“And what has changed as a result, besides messing up the world?”

“…….”

“Why do you think I brought you here in the first place?”

“…….”

“Because I liked your pride, that good but stubborn pride that won’t be swayed by anything. But you’re crazy about women, and you’ve brought things to this point?”

Saeri stepped closer to Ryu Won and pressed her index finger firmly against his chest. He didn’t move an inch.

She opened her mouth, not hiding her exhaustion.

“Don’t make fun of the gods with your tongue.”

His eyes gradually calmed, as if he had remembered something, and she smiled with satisfaction. Then she reached out and placed her hand on his forehead.

Ryu Won’s body shook violently. It was as stiff and rigid as a stone statue.

“I’ve been thinking about it. What kind of punishment should I give you for making things like this.”

“…….”

“I’ve come up with a punishment that fits your tongue perfectly. You’re to remain here, neither dead nor alive, only a memory.”

“…….”

“The more you think of Iris and search for her, the more you will suffer, for I will erase her existence from this world.”

“I don’t think that will make Iris disappear from the world. You’ll regret it.”

“Do you really think I will?”

“You’ll regret it, just like I will.”

As if she didn’t want to hear any more, Saeri let out a strong glow from her hand. An orange-white glow filled the scene, and another memory came to her.

She was floating in a cloudless sky.

She looked at her arms, which were white and pale. They were densely covered in black spots. The number of spots had increased exponentially from what she remembered.

Saeri turned away and looked down at the sky.

“Damn Snarl. They gnaw at you.”

She had dreamed of a perfect world, but the reality was different.

Despite Saeri’s ability to steadily rid the world of Snarls, they multiplied like zombies. The more Snarls took over the world, the weaker Saeri became.

Saeri was Tanato, and that was the world.

As time went on, no matter how hard she tried to erase the Snarl, even her powers failed her.

“Why, why do things like that even exist in a world like this?”

She stared at the Snarl with a look of boredom in her eyes. Her eyes, the color of the morning sun, were filled with hatred for them. Saeri couldn’t stand this moment, this defilement of her world.

Saeri rose to her feet and clenched her fists.

Saeri’s view of the world was now devoid of Yeon-young and Ryu Won, and even the souls they cared for were hard to find. She bit her lip as she looked at the desolate Tanato.

It was then that a new snarl caught her eye. Saeri stepped to the ground to deal with it.

“This…, what the hell is going on…”

The moment Saeri saw Tanato again, she forgot her purpose for coming down here.

The spirits that had disappeared around the field had returned and formed a circle. She approached the spirits with a nervous look on her face.

The light was soft, cozy, and peaceful, something she hadn’t seen since their disappearance.

Saeri felt something stirring in her chest.

As she approached the center, the spirits cleared a path. Saeri slowly approached the strong light.

She flinched and looked at her arm, feeling a warmth that thawed her frozen body. To her surprise, the black spots were fading.

The snarl-stained Tanato was being cleansed.

Saeri turned her head to stare more closely at the field. A Snarl stood among the cleansed spirits. Her brow furrowed of its own accord.

“You crawled all the way here.”

Saeri stretched out her hand, remembering once again why she had come down here. It was then.

Snarl had lost his color.

From jet-black to inky gray. From gray, his soul returned, white as drawing paper.

Saeri watched, unable to look away.
