The snarl that emerged from the hole couldn’t get any closer to them. The dirt that had risen from the ground held the Snarl’s lower half firmly in place.

Ji Hua smiled reassuringly as Yeon-young looked around in surprise at the familiarity of her ability, and it dawned on her that she had used her powers to tie up the transformed Snarl.

Fortunately, no other Snarls were found in the hole. She slowly lowered her raised shoulders. It didn’t seem to be a sign of war.

Ryu Won studied the Snarl intently, as if trying to gauge something, like a predator on its prey.

Yeon-young’s hands fidgeted on his hard, broad torso, realizing for the first time that she was hugging him tightly. Very slowly, she moved her hands down her sides and up her back, pulling away from his embrace.

“Why are you untangling from me?”

“What?”

Ryu Won’s sweet voice sounded after a long silence as he watched the Snarl. The hand that had been hiding under his uniform coat came out and clasped both of Yeon-young’s hands. He placed them back on his own waist.

“You’re in danger right now.”

“…Now?”

The Snarl was being held tightly by Ji Hua. Even if Ji Hua didn’t help her, one wave of Ryu Won’s hand and it would be gone.

‘How could this situation be dangerous?’

“You said you’d protect me, then you should hold on tighter.”

Yeon-young’s palm touched his stomach. The hard shape of his muscles felt naked against her palm.

Firm sculptures nestled beneath his powdery white skin. Even without removing his shirt, she was reminded of the texture of these muscles.

He guided her hand deeper inside. But she shook her head and tightened her grip on his wrist.

“Stop, guys. I can’t do this. I’m still a patient.”

Ji Hua, noticing the strange air currents between them, crumpled her face and whimpered.

Whether she did or not, Ryu Won’s gaze was fixed on Yeon-young. He reached out a slender finger and tickled the inside of her arm.

The hairs on her spine stood up like someone was tickling her. She looked up at Ryu Won, her brow furrowing slightly. He smiled so wide that his pupils disappeared, and he moistened his parched lips with his tongue.

“Ah, I can’t wait to go home.”

“Ophir!”

“You can let go of that. I’m holding it.”

A moment passed that seemed like an eternity. As Ji Hua’s cries grew louder, Ryu Won gently let go of Yeon-young’s wrist. Feeling like she was on fire, Yeon-young rubbed her wrist with her other hand.

Ji Hua let out a small gasp. Then the dirt surrounding Snarl turned to dust and disappeared.

Snarl was poised to pounce at any moment, but he didn’t move. Ryu Won watched it with an impassive face, like a specimen in a laboratory.

“Black…”

A sobbing moan came from the Snarl. Yeon-young covered her mouth with one hand and took a step toward Snarl.

The Snarl was crying. It was hard to tell if it was lamentation or resentment for the situation. The tears made a path down its face and kept pouring down.

They didn’t have to focus on the Snarl’s aura to recognize it. This Snarl had no intention of attacking them.

“Negro’s test specimen, did he get away?”

The silent plaza was echoed only by the cries of desperation. Yeon-young looked at Ryu Won and asked a last question.

“Do you have any spare potions?”

“I’ll have to look, but the one I borrowed is almost gone, and the snarl is beyond severe, so it might not work.”

“Ophir, how come you don’t even have a quarantine room?”

There was silence again. She wanted to help it, but as much as she wanted to, it wasn’t in the cards. Even if she wanted to try something, she didn’t have the tools.

She waited in silence for his decision. After all, the choice was up to Ryu Won, her boss.

Ryu Won, who had been studying the Snarl with eyes as sharp as a viper’s, suddenly glanced at Yeon-young. With a smile that resembled a half-moon, he opened his mouth.

“Now seems like a good time, doesn’t it?”

She thought he was going to extinguish the Snarl right away, but she was pleasantly surprised. It was a flippant remark, but she knew he didn’t say things like that for nothing.

He reached out his arm and gently cupped her rounded shoulder blades.

“I’ll hold you, and you can try to cleanse that snarl.”

“What?”

“You said you wanted to improve your abilities. Wouldn’t now be a good time to practice?”

“Ah…!”

Yeon-young sighed at his insight. It was the safest place to practice her abilities, not in the midst of a crowd of Snarls, and not with a single Snarl being held by other teammates.

He was right, and now was the perfect time. Yeon-young stared at him with admiration and respect.

“What, you’re more inclined to marry me now?”

“Well, I guess I’m falling in love with you all over again because you’re serious about it.”

“Well, then, please lower your terms of marriage.”

“I’ll consider it.”

At his childlike complaint, Yeon-young let out a weak laugh. Ryu Won leaned his head on her shoulder, his silky white hair tickling the nape of her neck. In that moment, she felt like she was in a field in a dream.

Ryu Won patted him on the back a couple of times and walked over to the Snarl. The Snarl was still dripping with tears like chicken poop.

“Just in case, let’s keep the contact to a minimum, just one index finger.”

“Okay.”

“I’ll keep an eye on your back, so you can practice.”

Ryu Won had kept his word that he was willing to walk over to where Yeon-young was. Now it was her turn to live up to that faith.

She raised her right index finger in the air and closed her eyes for a moment. She concentrated on the sensation of pushing the power in the core outward.

Soon, her power spread evenly throughout her body. She gathered it back into her index finger and opened her eyes. The core of the Snarl rested in the center of its forehead.

“Let me…, let me help you.”

At the sound of the soft, feminine voice, the Snarl’s eyes fluttered open. The tears slowly stopped.

Yeon-young smiled brightly, trying to shake off the tension, and placed her index finger on Snarl’s forehead.

Her fingertips tingled like electricity as energy met energy. Yeon-young shrugged off the dull pain and pushed her own energy into the Snarl’s.

“Hmmm.”

“Ah…”

But that was it. The area around Snarl’s forehead cleansed white, then turned black again.

Yeon-young’s eyes were colored with regret. Her hands slowly dropped to her sides.

“…Hmm, failure.”

She wondered how to judge the success of the purification.

Before, just touching Yeon-young had purified a Snarl’s aura. But this time, even after infusing it with her original energy, the Snarl didn’t return to its original form.

Her mind was racing with thoughts. She rubbed her temples with her hands, trying to figure it out.

Ryu Won, who had been watching the scene from a distance, stood beside her, his cold eyes scanning up and down the power-bound Snarl. His gaze was like a sharp blade.

“Ms. Yeon-Young, try one more time.”

“May I try one more time?”

“Of course, but if you fail this time, this snarl will be destroyed.”

“What?”

“Ophir, don’t make me feel uncomfortable by doing it twice!”

“It’s Han Ryu Won.”

Ji Hua, who had been listening to their conversation, stepped in to intervene, but his steps were firm as he distanced himself from the Snarl again. At his demeanor, Ji Hua looked at Yeon-young with a furrowed brow. ‘What to do?’

This was the last chance he was giving her. She had to seize this opportunity and succeed. She nodded, accepting his offer. Ryu Won crossed his arms and remained silent as he followed behind her.

Yeon-young turned her attention back to her work. Just as the night sky swallowed the moon, the Snarl’s aura rose strongly. She swallowed dryly, gathered her strength once more, and raised her index finger to its forehead.

She hadn’t read the Snarl’s memories before, but it was clear how much pain it was feeling right now.

She wishes this black energy would disappear without a trace.

She hope that this soul, who was innocently turned into a Snarl by Negro, can find a new life.

“Uhhh…!”

Ji Hua’s voice was filled with pure admiration. Yeon-young, who hadn’t noticed the change at first, was now beaming.

The black aura was shattering like the surface of chocolate cracking, and Snarl’s figure, centered on his forehead, was gradually becoming transparent and white again.
