‘This is it.’

I swallowed hard as I looked at the crudely crafted gem inside the pendant.

When Paul gave it to me, I thought it didn’t look very pretty for something supposedly precious.

And I hadn’t taken his warning—that it would protect me from danger—very seriously either

First of all, I never thought I would be in danger.

Still, because it was something from the Medes and given to me personally, I kept it with me.

‘Then how do I use this?’

I quickly scanned the next sentence.

[Once transformed into a beast, the will to be human is weak. Over time, the person becomes more beastlike and eventually loses human consciousness.]

‘Isn’t that basically describing a divine beast?’

But as I recall, divine beasts had existed way before this document was written.

[If you then engrave Medest’s seal on your chest and place a jewel imbued with magic on it to infuse it, you will be able to return to being human again.]

With many questions still in my mind, I began to summarize what I had read so far.

According to the book, the necklace could be used to turn my father back into a human.

That alone would be enough to achieve the goal.

But I couldn’t just close the book here. The book’s contents continued.

[Because the ability to transform into a beast has left future generations with this side effect, the Medes lineage is essentially born with two curses. However, through Baron Artae’s research, the Medes family successfully combined these two curses, making themselves ordinary.]

Artae again.

The researcher’s family that served the Medes.

All the pieces were falling into place.

Originally, Artae had been researching ways to make Medes live as normal humans.

And the result of that research was someone like Mariel.

A high noble who didn’t even know she was born with magic…

Who didn’t know she possessed the beast-blood ability to suppress her own power…Living life as a completely ordinary human.

[Medes tried to pass this method on to Hyrad and Elijah, but they both refused. They preferred the powers bestowed upon them as much as the pain and madness that came with being so different from humanity.]

My heart pounded harder as I confirmed that phrase.

Yohan really wants to live like an ordinary person.

I remembered his gloomy words about not wanting to have children for fear that they would also experience that kind of pain.

‘Could Medes have been the key to helping him all along?’

Just then—

“It’s time. The meeting should be ending now,”

The attendant who had been watching me from behind opened his mouth.

“You should leave soon.”

It was a shame, but it was time to go.

I had promised with my own mouth, so I had to keep it.

‘A promise I never made doesn’t count… right?’

Still—

I smiled and immediately closed the book. Then, without a second thought, I stood up.

“Yes, I understand.”

I returned the book to its place and began walking back, following the attendant.

* * *

As the servant had said, the nobles’ meeting had already ended.

“Yurika, would you like to go back with Yohan first?”

Mariel said as if she were sorry.

“I’ll follow later.”

She didn’t explain, but judging from the way Roymond hovered behind her with a bright red face like he’d just been handed the world, it wasn’t hard to guess why.

“Okay. See you later at home.”

I waved with a grin—I wanted time alone with Yohan anyway.

Yohan also looked very pleased.

The way he exchanged knowing glances with Roymond made me suspect they’d planned this ahead of time.

And as soon as I got into the carriage, I started telling Yohan the contents of the book I had read in the library.

Yohan’s face became serious after hearing the whole story.

Trying to lighten the mood, I smiled and added:

“Perhaps even the Hyrad curse could be lifted. If you still think of your magic as a curse.”

“You don’t even know how yet.”

“I can just go back and figure it out.”

I said in a confident voice.

“I’ll transform into a squirrel and steal the key. I remember the attendant’s face. If I wait until His Majesty has no need to go there, I can sneak in again and read the rest.”

Yohan didn’t answer and just looked at me quietly.

“Anyway, everything seems to be working out well. Of course, there are bigger things to consider, but for now, I just have to think about my father.”

I smiled slightly as I took his hand.

“I never expected Paul to give me a family heirloom during the hunting competition. I did expect Rivena to try something, but still…

“About that, Yurika.”

Yohan said in a low voice.

“The more I think about it… doesn’t it feel off?”

“Huh?”

“Anyway, I don’t know for sure, but Rivena indeed summoned the boar. She controlled the beast, which wouldn’t normally come there.”

“…Yeah. I guess so.”

“She may not be able to control humans freely, but animals… she definitely can.”

“…I guess so.”

I answered in a trembling voice.

“Since Medest is a beastkin family, they must’ve done extensive research on animals—including me.”

Actually, I was also well aware of the part that Yohan pointed out.

Although it may not have been at a great level, Rivena was definitely able to control the instincts of the beast.

And more than that—based on what happened with my father and with me—she knew how to turn Medes’ blood into beasts.

Not just one method, but two:

A true divine beast with abilities—me.

And a powerless beast—my father.

“That heirloom… there’s only one.”

Yohan spoke slowly.

“Actually, I want to tell you to keep it for yourself.”

I swallowed hard at the unexpected words.

The book said the gemstone would sink in. Meaning it was single-use.

In other words—if I used it to save my father, there would be no second chance for any other Medes descendant who might suffer the same fate.

“But….”

As I hesitated and muttered, Yohan smiled and said.

“Of course, I know you won’t listen to that. You’re already stabilized as a human, and the Duke can’t return on his own. I’m just… saying what I think.”

I nodded sullenly.

I knew what Yohan was worried about.

Yohan loves me, so even if he respected my decision, he couldn’t help but think that way.

“Instead, would you like to make a promise with me?”

Yohan looked me in the eye seriously and said:

“As long as there is this kind of risk,… Don’t turn into a squirrel again. It’s dangerous to enter that library in that form. Rivena knows you can turn into a squirrel, and she knows you want to see more of the book. She can easily use that to set a trap.”

That made sense. I nodded.

“Okay.”

If he respected my decisions, then I should respect his as well.

Because it’s for Yohan’s sake, and I can’t do anything he doesn’t want to do.

“Then let’s find another way. There’s still a lot we need to investigate anyway.”

Besides, that wasn’t the only thing that was urgent.

Even at this very moment, Rivena’s experiments are likely continuing.

An experiment to turn back time using the father’s blood.

“Anyway, let’s start with my father.”

I said, patting Yohan’s hand.

“And then we stop Rivena.”

If my father returned to being human, he might be able to reveal the truth he knew to the world.

Maybe he could even expose Rivena.

If he remembered anything at all—it would be our biggest lead.

I prayed he had evidence connecting Rivena to the Temple in some way.

So, as soon as we arrived at the Duke of Medes’s residence, we immediately looked for the tiger.

The maid smiled and told us.

“Oh, the tiger is in the back garden with the Duchess.”

I held tightly to the bracelet Paul had given me.

‘Now I can really meet my father.’

“Shall I guide you?”

The maid asked kindly.

“No. I have someone to meet before that.”

I shook my head and said with a grin.

“I’m going to go to Viscount Trevor Olteva first.”
