“To not kill you….”

Yohan spoke coldly, stepping on the assassin’s waist with an arrogant attitude.

“I held on desperately.”

In fact, it wasn’t difficult for Yohan to eliminate one assassin who was his target with magic.

It would have been the easier, simpler option.

“Soon enough, you’ll be begging me to kill you.”

However, he was determined to capture the skilled assassin, and he even went as far as destroying the streets to catch the skilled assassin himself.

Of course, the reason he didn’t kill the assassin was obvious—

To uncover who was behind the attack on me.

‘It can’t be Rivena. Then who?’

I, too, rolled my eyes in thought.

Of course, I was shocked to the point where my heart skipped a beat, But in the face of this unexpected situation, my mind quickly began to analyze.

‘No one would take such a reckless risk at a time like this.’

Even though it had been a long time since I had been out, I was still accompanied by Yohan, the greatest wizard in the empire.

That meant this assassination attempt had virtually no chance of succeeding from the start.

Besides, even though I had avoided it with my beast-like instincts, the assassin’s skills seemed to be of a very high level. Even Yohan hadn’t noticed the presence until just before.

‘This doesn’t make sense. Someone capable of hiring such a skilled assassin wouldn’t be this careless.’

The only real enemies I had were from the temple. Nowhere else had I made enemies.

That just made the situation all the more puzzling.

And besides, the High Priest and the other senior Priest were still awaiting trial.

Even if they had subordinates to act on their behalf, there was no logical reason to risk a stunt like this and worsen their sentence.

While I was biting my nails, Yohan, in a grim voice, turned to his subordinates and gave an order:

“Take him to the underground prison.”

He had also used quite a bit of magic.

Perhaps that’s why, despite his usual eerie expressionless demeanor, he had a dangerous air.

The uncontrollable anger and the surging pain mixed together gave off an eerie vibe that anyone who saw it would feel.

“I’ll interrogate him myself.”

“Yes.”

Those who had been attached as escort knights immediately began to capture the assassin and take him to the Duke of Hyrad’s house.

“And make sure to compensate anyone who was harmed.”

“Yes, Master.”

The adjutant immediately bowed his head and walked away toward the messy scene.

Yohan, who had been watching the scene for a while, turned his head to me and asked worriedly.

“Yurika, are you okay? Are you really not hurt anywhere?”

“Uh… I’m fine. As you can see.”

Once again, Yohan’s attitude of checking if I was hurt was extremely affectionate.

But just by looking at his slightly trembling fingertips, I could tell how unstable he was.

Though he tried not to show it, his purple eyes were violently shimmering.

I looked at Yohan, who was brushing the dust off my dress, and spoke quietly.

“You’re the one we should be worrying about.”

Yohan didn’t react to my words, but gently responded:

“Once I interrogate him, I’ll know everything. Don’t worry too much.”

“Yohan….”

“Until we figure out who’s behind this, it’s best if you don’t go out for a while. Even if it’s frustrating, let’s stay inside my house.”

He spoke as if his own suffering was of no importance at all.

I furrowed my brows and whispered:

“Doesn’t it hurt? Why did you push yourself to use so much magic?”

“Because if I hadn’t caught him, you might’ve been in danger again,” Yohan answered calmly.

When I blinked in surprise, he gave a mischievous smile and added:

“Actually, I’m joking… I did that because I was angry. How dare someone try to hurt my Yurika.”

The knights of the Duke of Hyrad were not bad in terms of skill.

Even without using magic, he could’ve just ordered them to pursue the assassin.

After all, the attack was on me, not Yohan.

As I made a puzzled expression, Yohan playfully nudged me and said:

“Of course I did. We’re lovers. This is only natural.”

“Ah….”

It was only then that I realized that we were pretending to be a couple in front of many people.

In a way, Yohan’s words were right.

There’s no way a wizard like Yohan would sit idly by while his lover is attacked.

“You’re right.”

I bit my lower lip slightly as I looked into Yohan’s violet eyes.

He gently took my hand and said:

“Okay, let’s go back quickly. Just in case, let’s meet with the doctor.”

Honestly, he was probably in way more pain than I was.

The moment our hands touched, I could feel the tangled mess of magic pulsing through him.

“It’ll take quite a while to get to Duke Hyrad’s house. Let’s leave quickly.”

That was also true.

We had come quite far and had to take a long carriage ride back to the duke’s house.

“Thanks anyway, Yohan.”

I answered with a slight smile.

I smiled slightly and added in a casual tone:

“As a token of gratitude… should I give you a kiss?”

We’d kissed once before.

The first time is hard—but the second time… maybe not so much.

Besides, Yohan wasn’t in good condition. Even if we went by carriage, it was too far to get to Duke Hyrad’s house.

And of all times, I hadn’t brought the potion Runart gave me—the one that turns me into a squirrel.

So, I think it would be an efficient choice to just lock lips for a moment and calm him down.

At my words, Yohan’s calm face hardened slightly.

“Of course. We’re lovers. This is only natural too.”

It was exactly in the same context as what Johan had said earlier.

At my calm suggestion, Yohan’s breathing grew slightly heavier. I let out a small laugh and said,

“Of course, only if you’re okay with it. I have no intention of forcing you. It’s just… just a suggestion.”

“That can’t be true, Yurika.”

His response came quickly.

“But….”

Yohan spoke in a tone that seemed to be suppressing something.

“I might not be able to stop….”

“It’s okay.”

I grabbed his hand and pulled him towards the carriage.

“If it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t have even caught that assassin.”

Yohan let out a sigh and ran a hand through his hair, then muttered in a low voice,

“I’m such trash…”

I looked at Yohan for a moment with eyes that seemed to ask why, but he immediately smiled bitterly and wrapped his arm around my shoulder.

“Wizards are originally trash, Yurika.”

‘Hmm. I did feel like I was digging my own grave here…’

“You don’t know how lucky I am that you can’t read my mind right now.”

With a suddenly serene expression, Johan whispered kindly, as if the eerie atmosphere from earlier had never existed.

“Let’s go.”

* * *

I am human too, but human life is truly difficult to predict.

Even though I was the one who made the first suggestion, I was incredibly nervous being alone with Yohan in the carriage.

Inside the carriage, with the curtains drawn tightly shut, I felt strangely restless.

“It’s just like last time,” I said, looking at Yohan, who sat there calmly.

“Just like we did in front of Prince Theodore.”

“Yurika. Sorry, but I’m a little on edge right now.”

His expression looked relaxed, but his voice was tense and low, and I could tell he really was on edge.

“I hate even hearing that bastard’s name come out of your mouth. Maybe stop saying it from now on.”

“Okay, I won’t say it.”

It wasn’t that difficult, so I answered quickly.

Then, gripping the hem of my dress tightly again, I added,

“J-just a little contact, okay? Just a little.”

My heart was racing even though I hadn’t done anything yet.

“Let’s just calm down a little… Then when we get to the Duke of Hyrad’s estate, I’ll calm you down in my divine beast form…”

I fumbled over my words for a long while, rolling my eyes, then finally let out a deep sigh.

“Sorry. I must sound so pathetic.”

Yohan stared at me silently without saying anything. I continued talking, wiggling my fingers.

“But unlike you… I’m a little nervous…”

To that, Yohan responded slowly.

“Why am I different from you?”

“Huh?”

“Do I look like I’m not nervous?”

I cautiously looked at Yohan’s face.

Now that I looked closer, I could faintly sense a mix of pain and anticipation.

“Well… you seem kind of calm, I guess.”

“I’m not calm.”

“It’s like you can handle it, but I just went ahead and suggested it like an idiot…..”

“I can’t handle it.”

At the same time, he leaned towards me.

The slight flush in his eyes and the barely-tensed corners of his mouth came into view, and it made me dizzy.

‘What the heck, my heart is beating faster than when I was almost assassinated earlier.’

“Yurika, you shouldn’t have said things like that.”

“huh?”

“Even if you tell me to stop now, I won’t be able to.”

“Ah… Well, I said it out of my own mouth and I have no intention of taking it back.”

I blinked, trying to act nonchalant.

“Besides, you’ve been through a war, so you can probably stay way calmer than me, right?”

In fact, it was something I blurted out without even knowing what was okay and what was not okay.

Yohan answered with a slight smile.

“Yeah, I have. But right now, I think you’ve turned me into a complete fool.”

His voice, like he was holding back something tightly, continued slowly.

“I’ve become someone completely uncomposed, someone who can’t handle anything…”

Now my eyes are filled with Yohan.

Compared to the impulsive kiss in front of Theodore, this moment wrapped around my whole body so tightly it felt suffocating.

“Shall I prove it to you now?”

He immediately closed the distance, and soon I fully understood what he meant by that.
