It was night. A very, very late night. Dana finally opened her eyes. The first thing she sensed was a sweet, cloying fragrance brushing against the tip of her nose. It was a hazy scent, as though drifting somewhere between dream and reality.

“You’re awake.”

And there was a man sitting beside the bed, looking down at her.

“Does anything hurt?”

Dana smiled softly. “No. I’m fine.”

“It looks like you hurt your head. There’s no wound, but there’s some blood…”

“What does that matter?” Dana merely smiled bashfully and reached out toward him as if telling him to come over and to hold her.

Rumie did not take her hand. He simply stared down at her arms, spread wide toward him.

“Why are you just looking? Dana whispered. “Come on. Hold me.”

Rumie let out a small, dry laugh. “You’re doing this again.”

“…”

“Why on earth are you acting like this toward me?”

“Hurry. Hold me.”

“I told you, I can’t.”

“Why? Why not?”

He firmly shook his head. “If I say no, then it’s—”

Before he could finish his refusal, Dana pulled Rumie toward her. He was dragged forward helplessly and toppled onto the bed. She then climbed on top of him and pressed a hand against his chest.

“Do you really hate it? If you hate it, push me away.”

As expected, Rumie did not push her away. Like a defeated man, he merely looked up at her with eyes filled with helplessness. “Danaena.” He asked it like a sigh. “Do you really want to do this with me that badly?”

Instead of answering, Dana pulled her clothes down. Rumie abruptly turned his head away, avoiding her gaze. But soon, as though unable to withstand the powerful pull, he looked at her again.

Admiration, resignation, desire, humiliation, thirst, guilt… Dana saw countless emotions flicker through his red eyes. And she was simply dizzy and dazed. What she knew only one thing. The fact that she wanted this man.

Dana took Rumie’s hand and pulled it onto her waist. Then she spoke. “I love you.”

At that moment, his hand trembled as though convulsing.

Dana said it again. “I love you.”

Then, slowly… strength returned to his hand. The intent of his fingertips, fingers, and grip was all conveyed. Finally, he began to caress her flesh with his own will.

Dana smiled. “Touch me more. It feels good.” The next instant she said it, her entire field of vision flipped. She fell back onto the bed again while Rumie pressed her down. Their thighs tangled together tightly, fitting against one another without a gap. A moan like a sigh escaped her lips.

This was what she wanted. She had been longing for this so desperately… It was sweet. The sensation of skin intimately touching skin, the dizzying, wet feeling of her flesh being drawn into him.

Dana grasped his silver hair scattered across her skin and pulled him closer. “More.”

“More?”

“More.”

“Is this not enough?”

“Not enough. More. More, more.” She begged him with desperate eyes.

For an instant, a flame ignited in Rumie’s eyes. “You mean it?” He gripped her hair tightly. It was a force both rough and gentle. “You really want us to go all the way?”

“Yes.”

When she answered, he let out a rough laugh. “Then say it.” His eyes were intoxicated with heat as well, but he was still clinging to the last shred of reason. He breathed out a hot breath. “Annul your engagement, and say you’ll live with me.” His voice cracked under the weight of his desire. “Then I’ll do whatever you want.”

“Anything is fine. Hurry. I get it, so hurry.”

“Promise it.”

“Yes, I promise.”

“From now on, you’re, annulling, your engagement.”

The next moment, the bed creaked as Rumie pressed his weight against it. Dana’s breath caught in her throat.

“You’re… going to live with me…”

She could feel the end of his chin trembling. She had waited for this, longed for it desperately, yet instinctively, Dana pushed against his chest.

Rumie then whispered soothingly. “I won’t go all the way. Just… to the end.”

“No. I don’t want that.”

“It’s okay.”

Dana threw her arms around him and pulled him tightly into her embrace. For an instant, a sharp flash seemed to cut through even her soul, but even that was ecstasy.

It felt good. This sense of oneness. The fullness of finally becoming one. And then the relief of feeling as though she had finally gained a perfect shield. The comfort and pleasure she had finally obtained felt like nothing less than heaven.

At the very end of that rapture, intoxicated by intense pleasure, Dana lost consciousness. She sank into a deep sleep.

* * *

A mire… Beneath the streams of cold water pouring down on him, Rumie thought of that word. At this very moment, as he washed himself, he felt as though he had been plunged into a mire dirtier than ever before.

This was already his second shower tonight. The first had been after killing his maternal grandfather and his wife. To wash away their blood. And now, the second was after embracing Danaena. Because the blood that symbolized her first time had stained him…

Rumie wiped his wet face. Her first time? Then what had all those previous times been? Why had she lied, pretending she was already thoroughly experienced? Who would have thought I’d end up being her first partner? And she had been hurting so much, yet she had held onto me until the very end, refusing to let me go until the absolute last moment…

Rumie’s ears grew red again. Cold water poured over his head, washing everything away. Even so, the heat pooled within his body simply would not disperse. When his heated body refused to calm down, Rumie eventually decided to cool the heat himself. Slowly, he lowered his wet hand.

There was no hesitation. Why would there be any reason he couldn’t? With these hands, he had killed his maternal grandfather, killed his wife, and held that woman. He committed an offense against family and crossed a taboo. There was nothing left that these hands could not do.

He merely groaned low and slammed his head against the wall. And while being battered by the stream of water, while panting for breath… “Danaena…” He recalled that warm sensation from a moment ago. The pressure that seemed to squeeze even his soul, the body that moved together with his every motion, the breathtakingly beautiful flesh that seemed sculpted from moonlight…

At the end of a long, long pleasure, Rumie let out a rough moan and clenched his fist tightly. Then, suddenly, he burst out laughing. If even the demon saw him now, it would point a finger at him in scorn. What was laughable was that he did not think this corruption was a bad thing. The satisfaction he had enjoyed tonight was so great that it was enough to offset all this sense of guilt.

Rumie straightened himself and swept his wet bangs back. Then he thought about the future. Let’s live together with Danaena. Let’s send Mother away from the house, reduce the number of servants as much as possible, and surround ourselves only with vassals I can trust. And within the house, let’s not cross the line. Instead, let’s buy a villa somewhere secluded on the outskirts. Whenever Danaena begs for it like she did tonight, we can go there. Then it should be possible to live like that without anyone finding out. That the two of us together, forever, loving each other…

Love.

“I love you.”

Rumie smiled. Only after hearing those words did he understand. That he loves that woman. That must be why even after killing his maternal grandfather, he felt not even the slightest bit of guilt. So this is what love is. Danaena and I love each other.

Grinning like a young boy, Rumie washed himself. And then it happened.

[Even if Her Highness is not related to you by blood…]

His own voice echoed through the bathroom.

[Aren’t you siblings?]

Rumie looked down. Perhaps it had rolled out of the clothes he had thrown off. A crystal orb was being struck by the stream of water on the floor.

[If you continue harboring such feelings, God may punish you.]

From within the orb, he was lecturing the emperor.

[Having sexual feelings for your sister is a bit… Pardon me, but it’s disgusting. So please cast aside that filth.]

Had it been yesterday, Rumie would certainly have felt ashamed upon hearing those words. But after tonight, he had become a completely different person. Many things no longer mattered. He wasn’t even curious anymore about what that crystal orb was.

[Do not become obsessed with an improper relationship.]

What an annoying b*stard, acting all high and mighty. Rumie picked up the crystal orb, unable to stand the sight of it any longer. He would smash it. Right now. Yes, right now! He poured all his strength into his fingertips and squeezed tightly.

The once-solid crystal orb slowly began to crack. Crack. Crack. A cruel twisting sound rang through the air. And finally… crash! The crystal orb shattered into countless pieces. The fragments scattered through the air and fell to the floor.

It was that very moment.

“Gasp.” Rumie swallowed his breath. His body froze. It felt as though the shattered fragments had flown toward him and pierced him like daggers inside him, into his soul. “Gasp.”

The pieces of the crystal orb fell to the floor. Sharp edges of those fragments seemed to tear apart his spirit, wound him, and rake through him. Rumie sank to his knees on the wet floor. His fingertips began to tremble. His vision blurred white. In his ears, the sound of glass shattering and splintering rang endlessly. Then, soon after, it became thousands of voices, tangled and intertwined, surging over his consciousness.

[Rumie!]

[Brother Rumie.]

[Rumie?]

[How could you do this to me, Rumie? You traitor!]

What? What is this? What is happening?

[Take charge of protecting my sister, Princess Danae Geranze.]

Those memories flowing through the cracks…

[I trust you, Rumie Rolland.]

Fragments of memories poured out, one after another, rapidly filling his consciousness and growing clearer. Then, they burst forth like an explosion.
