* * *

The memories came crashing in like a tidal wave, and Rumie stopped breathing. It was the only thing he could do. Stop everything, breathe, and simply accept it all… And then he naturally realized.

[Come here and brush my hair again, Rumie. It feels awfully strange when I do it myself.]

Everything he had seen in the crystal ball until now. Everything he had thought was fake had all been real memories of the past. Every last one of them was his memories. His past.

[How could you betray me?]

Ah, yes. I remember.

[I didn’t even trust my own sister, yet I trust you.]

That was right. Under the pouring stream of water, Rumie remembered. When he was the loyal vassal of Raios Geranze, whose hair was golden. He had betrayed Raios. Because he fell in love with her.

[Choose me in your next life, you b*stard.]

And that life ended with him being executed by Raios. Wasn’t it supposed to end there?

“Ha, haha.” A laugh escaped him.

But life continued even after that. As though a clockwork mechanism had been rewound, it returned to the beginning. Yet with a different relationship. Life began once again.

In the next life, she was no longer Princess Danae Geranze. She was Danae Windsor, the young lady of the Windsor family. And he was her cousin. Back then, she was engaged to Raios Geranze. But when it was revealed that the two were blood siblings…

“Brother. I don’t know how I should persuade Raios. No matter how much I tell him we’re siblings, he won’t listen.”

Dana had demanded the engagement be annulled, but Raios wouldn’t let her go. So she came to Rumie to vent her frustrations and leaned on him.

“Don’t go, Brother.”

“What?”

“I want to stay together with you tonight.”

She seduced, came, and hid behind him. All to avoid Raios…

“Haha…” His laughter kept coming.

He knew. She chose to love him because she needed somewhere to hide. Even knowing that, Rumie gladly accepted it. Whatever the beginning had been, in the end it was love. Even if it hadn’t been love, he wanted her.

All the sex scenes he had seen inside the crystal ball had happened during that time. A life in which he dated her and promised to marry her. And what happened to him in that life? Did he marry her?

No… I couldn’t.

The answer came to him immediately. The burning mansion.

“I’ll be fine, so get out, Dana. If you stay, the mansion will collapse.”

There, they parted forever. And that life ended. Yet, another life began… And eventually, it came to the present time. Now, this very moment. The time in which he lives.

Rumie blinked. Cold water streamed down like tears. At last, the memories of the several years he had forgotten came flooding back. So did the memories of the cousin he had forgotten, Danae Windsor. They came back.

[I miss you.]

He remembered the moment he had rushed there like an excited dog at the sight of a single letter she had hastily scribbled out. But she wasn’t there. She wasn’t anywhere.

After that, Rumie was imprisoned for the crime of violating military law. He was stripped of his captaincy, his medals, his uniforms, losing everything until all that remained was just his bones. Throughout that time of his downfall, as the life he had built up until then was collapsing, she never, not even once, came looking for him. And when he went looking for her again, she greeted him with a smile as cold as ice.

“You called me, Dana.”

“I did.”

“What did you want?”

“I had a problem, but it’s resolved now.”

“Resolved?”

“Yes. It’s all over now. So you don’t need to worry.”

She spoke it so calmly.

“If it’s alright with you, I’d like to offer you financial compensation.”

She had toyed with him.

Rumie gently rubbed his throbbing eyes. Yes. That’s what happened. When Danae Windsor told me she would compensate me with money, I was so hurt, so angry. What did I do after that?

“You should call me by my name, Dana.”

He had entered her bedroom, closing the window. Rumie didn’t know what he was thinking. He only knew for certain that he couldn’t simply leave like that. And afterward…

“Then, would you like to hold me?”

She took off her chemise with a mocking smile.

“If you don’t want financial compensation, I’ll compensate you physically.”

“Haha.” Rumie laughed. A bitter laugh kept escaping him. “Ahahaha.”

He was quite the fool back then too. Just because she was beautiful, he was blinded by her. He even rushed toward her, enjoying that humiliation.

“Are you… satisfied now?”

But the misery that washed over me at the end of the act was beyond words.

“Or is once not enough?”

The woman he loved so much that it made every breath constrict was lying beneath his body, gasping for breath.

“Then do it more. As much as you want.”

Just as though tossing food to a beggar, she looked at him with eyes that seemed to say that now that he had eaten enough, he should just go away…

“If you’re finished, then leave now.”

His eyes grew hot. Even simply remembering it again made his chest ache as though it were being squeezed. With damp hands, Rumie covered his aching eyes.

“I have paid the full price with this. So, I hope we never have any reason to see each other again.”

And that’s why he…

“I’m sorry. I was wrong.”

He begged.

“I’m sorry for everything. So please, don’t say that we should cut ties.”

Rumie pleaded.

“No, I don’t want to. I never want to see you again, Brother.”

She was like a blade.

“How about it? I’m really a bad person, aren’t I? Forget about a terrible woman like me. Just think of it as having been bitten by a dog.”

It felt as though he was being murdered by that blade.

“I don’t want to see you again, so go! Please, stop clinging to me and go away! You’re so annoying! I really hate you!”

And in the end, it was on the journey back alone. Did I cry the whole way? Or did I laugh…? He didn’t remember that very well. What he remembered clearly was that he was in excruciating pain throughout the entire night.

“Ahahaha…”

And one thing is certain right now. He was laughing. Or was he crying? Rumie didn’t know.

Swaaa. Beneath the pouring stream of water, Rumie simply covered his face. How much time had passed like that? At last, he turned off the faucet. Drip, drip. The remaining water trickled down to the tip of his chin.

After drying himself, Rumie put on a robe and headed toward the bedroom. On the bed, that selfish, witch-like woman was deep asleep, her beauty dazzling.

“Dana.” He called her quietly. “Are you asleep?”

She did not wake.

What had he intended to say when she woke up? Rumie didn’t know.

A faint sense of unease lingered in the air.

Rumie pulled up the blanket that had slipped down and gently covered her body with it to keep her warm. Then he slowly turned his head and surveyed the room. First, he should take care of the bodies of his grandfather, his wife, and his father. Then erase their bloodstains. Dana would surely be shocked to learn he held her in a place like this. And if she found out that he held her despite that, she would be horrified by him. Therefore, he would do that so Dana could be at peace the next day.
