“No…!”

“Her Highness!”

Kayden and the knights shouted in alarm. Like stones launched from a catapult, they barely managed to catch the bloodied Diana as she fell from the fortress wall.

“Di, ana.”

With trembling hands, Kayden reached out to touch her face. Her usually pale face, now smeared with sticky red blood, was too horrifying for mere words.

Cough…”

But Diana was already unconscious. Only irregular, labored breaths and blood escaped from her lips.

“Your Highness, over there!”

Through the daze, a scream reached Kayden’s ears. Rough hands grabbed his shoulders, forcing him to look up at the sky, and he gasped.

Ah. Perhaps this was how the first elementalists felt.

Something black, ominous, and massive was flying through the sky. Dark energy was gathering around the demonic dragon’s mouth. What would happen next was all too clear.

Before he could think, Kayden’s body moved on instinct. He threw himself over Diana, shielding her.

Just then, scorching heat and poisonous fumes, capable of melting the world, rained down. Drip- A sound of water dripping was heard from somewhere, and suddenly, the world turned black and white, freezing in place.

* * *

It was a few minutes before the demonic dragon rose into the sky.

Ugh…”

Rip- Duke Findlay, who had just defeated a monster that had bitten his arm, groaned softly. He tore off a piece of cloth and tightly bound his bleeding arm. But the makeshift bandage quickly soaked with blood, which began seeping out through the gaps.

The duke leaned against the debris of the fortress, which was like a wall embedded in the ground, panting for breath. He glanced over at the demonic dragon, which was ripping through the knights.

Kieeeek! The demonic dragon howled after swallowing a knight whole. The sound sent chills down his spine.

The duke gritted his teeth. I never expected something like that would come out…

After escaping the palace, the duke returned to his stronghold, Findlay castle, and locked the gates. He released all the monsters and mutant creatures from his underground breeding facility around the fortress.

“This alone won’t be enough.”

But he knew this was just a stalling tactic. Now that his research on monsters had been exposed, the entire kingdom of Valhanas had become his enemy.

The strength and numbers of the monsters he unleashed couldn’t be ignored, but if given enough time, they could be defeated. Moreover, Kayden had a dark-attribute elementalist at his side, so it was only a matter of time before the defenses were breached.

“Awaken, hurry!”

Thus, the duke placed all his hopes in the egg that lay in the center of his lab. It was the result of years of painstaking research. He had no doubt that a dark spirit resided within it. That’s why he had even drawn the blood of his servants to try to hatch it.

But the moment he saw the sharp claws emerging from the cracked shell, the duke realized something had gone terribly wrong.

“This is impossible…”

The claws extending from the egg were larger than the entire egg itself. It defied all logic.

Crack! By the time he realized it, the egg had already been shattered, and the massive front paw that emerged from it had crushed half of the lab.

At that moment, the duke knew.

“…I have to escape.”

What had kept the duke alive for so long as one of the highest nobles was his cunning, persistence, patience—And his instinct for knowing when to flee. Trusting the instinct that had saved him countless times, the duke immediately fled the castle alone. He heard the screams of his servants trapped in the collapsing castle behind him, but that wasn’t enough to slow his steps.

After barely escaping the castle, he encountered one of the monsters he had unleashed near the fortress and fought it off. Although he was now covered in blood, his heart still beat strong.

First, he needed to escape and survive. Only then could he plan to subdue or kill that thing.

After taking a deep breath, the duke looked back at the demonic dragon. They, too, seemed taken aback by the demonic dragon’s sudden appearance. The air was filled with confused shouts and screams.

It’s a shame the taming failed… But if it can’t be tamed, it’s better to eliminate it.

One powerful being was enough. Coldly calculating, the duke mentally crossed out ‘Diana Bluebell’ from his list.

Losing the fortress due to the unexpected demonic dragon was a great loss, but eliminating the only dark-attribute elementalist would be a net gain.

With a fierce grin, the duke bared his bloodstained teeth. I never lose. Not to the imperial knights, not to Kayden, not to Diana. To no one! Ever!

Satisfied that the demonic dragon had fully turned its attention to the imperial knights, the duke stood up. He planned to escape through the back of the fortress and head toward the village.

The people there were too weak to even handle an injured elementalist. He would gather the necessary supplies and flee before this place became a graveyard. But his plan failed before it even began. A voice stopped him as he took his first step.

“Where do you think you’re going, Duke?”

The tone was dry as if addressing a subordinate. The words grated on the duke’s pride. He stopped instinctively and turned to see the speaker, his face twisted in anger.

“You…!”

Rebecca stood there, her white sword hanging by her side, one corner of her mouth twisted in a crooked smile.

The duke, about to explode in rage, instinctively surveyed his surroundings. Noticing his caution, Rebecca answered in a graceful voice. “Don’t worry. It’s just me.”

“…Ha.

It was fortunate that no other knights were present, but that, too, irritated the duke. How had she known he would try to escape alone? She stood there, confident that she could handle him by herself. How arrogant and foolish his granddaughter had become, rushing recklessly into danger to save her pride.

The duke let out a dry laugh. With a flick of his wrist, a beam of light streaked across the air, and his white spear appeared in his hand. “Do you really think you can face me?”

“I think you’re confused. I was half torn apart back then. Don’t get too cocky for defeating me in that state.” Rebecca spoke as if her wounded self from back then were an entirely different being.

The duke’s lips twisted at her words. “Only losers make excuses like that.”

“…Sure. Think what you want.” Rebecca muttered indifferently and charged at the duke.

Clang! The long spear deflected her swift sword strike. Even as he aimed for her neck, the duke remained cautious of their surroundings. She might have hidden knights nearby.

For the Duke of Findlay, escaping without being captured was of utmost importance. He resolved to strike Rebecca down quickly and make his escape.

Ugh!”

The duke was indeed a formidable opponent. Rebecca gritted her teeth as she narrowly blocked his spear.

There was a significant gap between a high-level elementalist and an intermediate one, but the duke had years of experience. That experience closed the gap between Rebecca, a newly high-level elementalist, and the duke. However…

Keugh!”

At that moment, the duke coughed up blood and collapsed to the ground. As blood gushed out, his voice slipped through like air from a punctured balloon.

“H-How…” His voice was filled with shock.

Duke Findlay had spent endless time analyzing Rebecca. To avoid being bitten by his own dog, he had carefully gauged her strength, even counting her teeth. But the Rebecca he faced now was far stronger than the one he knew. Perhaps even as strong as Kayden in their mock battles.

Rebecca looked down at him, her face full of pity, and smiled gently. “I’ve been suspicious of you much longer than you think.”

Ugh, keugh…

“And I wouldn’t reveal all my cards to an opponent like you, would I?”
