“What should we do, Daisy?”

Hmm.” Daisy pondered for a moment.

In an era overrun by monsters, the odds of someone escaping alone were slim. It was better not to face the person or creature behind the footprints alone until they confirmed who or what it was. However, time was also of the essence in locating and rescuing others.

While Daisy was deep in thought, the others waited silently. Though she wasn’t the oldest, Daisy was the strongest, wisest, and most capable among them, making her the de facto leader of the elementalists.

After a long pause, Daisy spoke with determination. “Niota and I will follow the footprints. The rest of you track the civilians. We’ll check the trail and catch up soon.”

“Got it. Just make sure to contact us immediately through the spirits if anything happens.”

“Okay.”

Maxi lightly patted Daisy on the shoulder before disappearing into the forest with the bickering Wicksvil and Wibur.

“Let’s go, Niota.”

“Yes.”

Daisy and Niota moved forward, following the footprints side by side. As they ran, Niota occasionally glanced at Daisy, his gaze filled with awe. Beautiful.

Her golden hair swayed near her small, fair ears. When the sunlight filtered through the trees and hit Daisy’s eyes, they gleamed like radiant gold. The white uniform and the white sword suited her better than anyone else. She was a warrior, a savior—someone who shone purely by her own merit.

That was Daisy Bluebell, the woman Niota had long cherished in his heart. But Daisy was utterly oblivious to such matters, so Niota had been suffering in silence for years.

“…It’s a cave.”

Daisy muttered, stopping in her tracks. Niota, still staring at her, was startled and came to an abrupt halt as well.

The footprints they had been following ended at the entrance to a dark, ominous cave. A cold breeze seeped out from the depths of the cave, indicating it went deep underground.

Niota took a step forward and spoke. “I’ll go in first, Daisy.”

“No, I’ll go first. You still haven’t fully recovered from your injuries in the last battle.”

“…You knew?”

“You say such strange things. Did you really think I wouldn’t care about my comrades? Besides, we’ve known each other the longest.”

Daisy smiled lightly and playfully nudged Niota’s side with her elbow. He groaned dramatically, doubling over and burying his face in his hands to hide his flushed cheeks.

Calm down. To Daisy, I’m just a comrade, and this is a monster-infested forest. Confessing now would be the worst… Niota clutched his pounding heart and barely managed to control his emotions.

“Alright. Just be careful.”

“I will. You too.”

With that, the two entered the cave. Niota followed behind Daisy, lighting the way while she took the lead, ready to fend off any threats. They had been walking through the pitch-black darkness for some time when, just as Daisy rounded a corner, sharp rocks suddenly rained down from above.

“Daisy!”

Niota shouted in alarm. But Daisy, unfazed, swung her golden sword and deflected all the falling debris with ease.

“Hey, attacking me without even knowing who I am—” Daisy began to speak in annoyance, but her words trailed off as she saw what lay ahead, fully illuminated by Niota’s flame. “…A monster?”

It was understandable why she was shocked. Pressed against the far wall, trying to stay as far away from Daisy and Niota as possible, were two figures. One was a monster resembling a wolf, and the other was a terrified human boy with violet eyes.

* * *

As soon as Niota confirmed the presence of the monster, he moved to kill both the boy and the creature. But Daisy blocked his way. She argued that neither the boy nor the monster seemed consumed by the same murderous intent typical of other monsters.

Soon, the other elementalists, who had been dealing with the monsters that had abducted the villagers, joined them.

“I’m against it.”

“Well, I’m for it.”

Hmm… Not that I want to upset Valfor like Allen did, but I’m also in favor.”

Wibur sided with Niota, while Wicksvil and Yelling supported Daisy.

In the end, the boy and the monster were taken to a barn near the village where the elementalists lived.

“What’s your name?”

“…”

“If you don’t have one, could I give you one? How about Lombard Dihanis? It’s the name of my favorite storybook hero.”

The boy and the monster remained wary of the elementalists, but they seemed to relax slightly when Daisy firmly intervened on their behalf.

Daisy kept trying to talk to the boy, asking him his name and how he came to live with the monster. But the boy could only make sounds similar to crying and couldn’t speak properly, as if he had lived with the monster since birth. In the end, Daisy couldn’t get a clear story from them and allowed them to stay on the outskirts of the village.

Contrary to people’s concerns, the boy and the monster only appeared briefly outside the barn when Daisy brought them clothes and food, and they never took a step beyond the barn’s boundaries. This precarious yet peaceful arrangement continued for a time—until the day a monster, which had narrowly escaped from the forest, returned, leading an attack on the village with other monsters.

Kyaaak!”

“S-Save us!”

Flames erupted everywhere, and screams filled the air. It was the first time such a large number of monsters had attacked.

“Niota, take the south! Maxi, cover the north! Valfor and Allen, handle the east! I’ll take the west!” Daisy issued orders frantically, leading the spirits. She moved faster and more vigorously than the others because she was the only one among the five elementalists who had succeeded in forming a contract with a Spirit King rather than a high-level spirit.

As the Spirit King of Light, Rollin, helped Daisy evacuate people, a sudden thought crossed its mind.

<By the way, Daisy, where is that boy you were so fond of?>

“…Oh!”

Daisy finally remembered the boy and the monster. Of course, they wouldn’t understand human speech yet, so they must be utterly confused by the situation. She had been so focused on the evacuation that she had completely forgotten about them.

“Keep leading the evacuation, Rollin. I’ll be back soon!”

Daisy entrusted Rollin with the task of guiding the people and sprinted toward the barn. But when she arrived, several monsters had already destroyed the barn and dragged out the boy and the wolf.

“No…!”

Daisy tried desperately to fend off the monsters, but with Rollin already manifested, drawing on additional power caused her body to collapse. It felt as though her insides were being crushed, and blood poured from her mouth.

Keugh!”

<Dai…!>

Daisy’s body crumpled to the ground. Rollin’s panicked voice echoed in her ears before fading away, likely the result of its forced reversion due to her overexertion.

The aftermath of the Spirit King’s reversion was severe. Blood continued to gush from Daisy’s mouth.

Kiiik. Kiik. Meanwhile, the monsters, having spotted Daisy, began closing in.

Her vision blurred from the blood loss. Daisy blinked groggily at the blade descending toward her head.

Ah…!”

Kiaaak!

Just then, the boy’s now-familiar voice pierced her ears. At the same time, the wolf leaped at the monster swinging its blade at Daisy, raising its front paw to attack.
