The Only Woman in a Zombie Apocalypse Vol. 2 Chapter 55 - Battle with Humans (1)
The lingering effects of the long sex weren’t easily shaken off.
Dayoung, whose whole body was trembling, found it difficult to move and could only function normally after resting for another day.
Even as the color returned to Dayoung’s face, which had been pale with dark circles under her eyes, the group continued to scold Minho.
“Stop scolding Minho… I’m fine, you know.”
“Noona, if you’re having a hard time, you should say you’re having a hard time. If you just take it like that, he’ll get used to it.”
“I get it. From now on, I won’t make Dayoung suffer, okay?”
As she watched Dohun and Minho grumble while eating breakfast, Dayoung looked at Hayun sitting across from her and asked.
“Is the training going well?”
“Yeah. The kids are keeping up well. Ian and Sion especially have high accuracy rates.”
“Really? That’s a relief. It’s good if everyone can handle all the firearms we have. Which ammo do we have the most of again?”
“We have a lot of K100s. I think it’d be best to focus on getting familiar with rifles primarily.”
“Okay. You and Dodam are working hard. Training every day and going out on reconnaissance.”
The thought that the two had struggled because she had been away for two whole days made her feel terribly sorry.
“But it wasn’t hard because there are a lot of people who can handle guns. Don’t worry.”
“I’ll handle the training this morning.”
“Got it.”
After the meal, Dayoung picked up a rifle and went up to the rooftop with the untrained members.
“Hello. I’ll be teaching you today. But first, let’s check how well you’ve learned. Joohan, what is this part called?”
“The buttstock!”
“Hanyeol, what about this front part?”
“The front sight!”
“Dohun, this part?”
“The rear sight!”
“Ian, what is this part?”
“The selector switch!”
“You’ve all learned well. Today, we’ll focus on learning how to hit moving targets. So, each of you should attach the silencers you brought to your rifles. I’ll mention this again after training, but since the silencer gets hot, you must not repeatedly touch it with your bare hands. You’ll get burned.”
“Okay!”
The group answered as they attached silencers to the fronts of their rifles.
“There are two ways to hit a moving target. Either move the barrel along with the moving target, or predict its direction and aim the barrel in advance.”
The group listened attentively to Dayoung’s words.
That’s because when it came to hitting moving targets, Dayoung was more skilled than even those who had completed military service, as well as Dodam and Hayun.
“I’ll show you a demonstration. Gather around here. See that zombie in front of the gray building over there?”
Dayoung climbed onto a high platform and pointed at a zombie moving most actively in the distance.
“At that speed, even if you move the barrel along with it, the hit rate should be decent. However, since you have to pull the trigger while moving, it’s more difficult than predicting. But since zombies are slow, it’ll be much easier.”
Dayoung placed the rifle stock against her shoulder and aimed at the zombie using the sights. Her upper body moved in the direction the zombie was moving, and bang—it hit the head exactly, and the zombie collapsed.
The group stared blankly at the scene, then clapped and cheered.
“Today, we’ll practice hitting targets by moving the barrel along with them.”
“Okay!”
Dayoung called them one by one to the railing and assigned them targets. She then pointed out incorrect postures or aiming methods one by one.
Thanks to Dayoung’s one-on-one instruction, the group’s hit rate improved.
Even Jiwoo, who had never managed to hit a zombie before, returned to her spot dancing with joy, and Jihu approached Dayoung’s side.
While aiming through the sights at the target Kim Dayoung had designated, Lee Jihu called out to her.
“Noona. I think there are people over there?”
“Where?”
“Behind the target. On the left diagonal. They’re hard to see because the building’s in the way, but they look like people.”
At Jihu’s words, Dayoung raised her gun and checked the area behind the target.
They were hard to see, obscured by the building, but she could make out the figures of men peeking their heads out.
“Everyone, get down!”
Dayoung shouted as she came down from the platform, and the group all ducked below the railing. Then, bang—a gunshot echoed through the quiet shopping mall.
“What? What’s that gunshot? Did the scouting team fire??”
“I don’t think so. They went scouting to the west today. This is the east.”
“Then? Did they… just shoot at us???”
The group, crouched below the railing, began to stir.
They were all young adults in their early twenties, most without military experience, so their faces were painted with terror at the sound of gunshots aimed their way.
Dayoung gritted her teeth, pulled the ear-mic from her pocket, plugged it into her ear, and turned on the walkie-talkie attached to her waist.
“Scouting team, where are you?”
—We’re in front of the shopping mall. What’s going on?
“We’re under attack at the mall right now. Men with guns. These bastards… I think they’re from the Sports Center. Get back to the mall now.”
—Got it!
Dayoung moved to a spot where supplies were stacked higher than the railing and aimed her gun through a gap.
Had they really shot at the mall?
To double-check, she looked through her sights to confirm their position.
And then she saw the muzzle. Using the building as cover, she could see the muzzle and a small head. The muzzle was unmistakably pointed toward the shopping mall.
Minho, who always kept his walkie-talkie on, quickly came up to the rooftop.
Seeing the group hiding below the railing, he crouched down as low as possible and approached Dayoung.
“An attack? What happened??”
“They shot toward us. If Jihu hadn’t noticed first, someone would’ve been hit.”
“What?? Is it really those bastards from last time?”
“Yes. They only brought the guns they were holding that day. I checked just now. It’s definitely them. We should’ve killed them all that day. If we had, our people wouldn’t be in danger now.”
“Dayoung, calm down. You’re too worked up right now.”
Dayoung wasn’t one to get angry easily, so the sight of her highly agitated and rambling left the group holding their breath.
Ian, Jiwoo, and Jihu, who had been at the gymnasium that day, instinctively clenched their fists. The others, who had heard about the incident, felt the same.
“They’ve lost their minds. Those sons of bitches. Boss, isn’t this a good time to take care of them?”
“That’s true, but we’re not exactly good at shooting. Noona called for the older guys to come, so let’s discuss it once they get here.”
At Ian’s words, a few went to the western railing to check on the scouting team.
Seeing them enter the mall, they moved back to where the group was.
“The older guys have entered the mall.”
Hearing that the scouting team had entered the mall, Dayoung radioed Hayun.
“Hayun oppa, can you bring up the magazine with the K100 rounds and the scope?”
―Okay.
Shortly after, the scouting team came up with their hands full of magazines.
Dayoung received a scope and attached it to her rifle, and Hayun also attached a scope to her rifle before speaking.
“What do you plan to do?”
“I want to deal with them from here first. The building is blocking us. Not sure if it’ll work.”
Hayun, who had been briefly informed by Jiseok about what happened at the gymnasium on the way back to the mall, stared intently at Dayoung. She was a woman who had just turned 24.
In a peaceful world, she would be living a happy life, working hard at what she needed to do at her young age.
Of course, among the group, Dayoung’s age wasn’t considered particularly young, but still—was survival the same for men and women?
A world where even men struggled to survive.
A world where betrayal ran rampant and people killed each other to stay alive.
No matter how good-natured they were, if they had settled somewhere other than the mall—a place with no food or shelter—things might not have been this peaceful.
That was just human nature.
“The building is blocking the view, so I can’t even tell how many there are.”
At Dayoung’s voice, Hayun shook off his distracting thoughts and raised his gun to check on the men. Seeing them hiding behind the building, only peeking their heads and guns out, Hayun let out a sigh.
“It seems like it’ll be hard to catch them like this.”
“Should we go directly?”
“That’s too dangerous. If we use the eastern barricade, we’ll have no cover on our side. Going around the other way would take too long, don’t you think?”
At Hayun’s words, Dayoung looked around at the surrounding buildings.
The distance to the men was about 300M. If they couldn’t lure them outside, they couldn’t be caught. It hadn’t even been two weeks since they let them go at the athletic center, and they were already back for revenge.
If they didn’t deal with them today, they would definitely come back again.
“We need to surround the buildings. It won’t be easy, right? Dodam, what do you think?”
Although Hayun is a career soldier, I heard she doesn’t go on many missions because she’s an officer.
Dodam is in a Special Forces unit and has been on missions, so she asked him to, but Dodam just looked at Dayoung like a mute who’d eaten honey.
“Noona, I only do what I’m told… I’m sorry.”
“No. It’s not something you should be sorry for. When you think about it… it’s because of me. I’m the one who should be sorry…”
“How is that your fault, Noona? Those bastards were messed up from the start. Noona, don’t think like that!”
Seeing Dayoung blame herself, Dohun moved closer and patted her back. The group also nodded, looking at Dayoung.
How was any of this Dayoung’s fault?
In the first place, their so-called leader had treated Dayoung disrespectfully, which was why she ran away.
“Besides. If we’re talking about revenge, it’s us who should be seeking it from them, not the other way around. Our guys were the ones who got beaten by them that day. Noona was humiliated. I can’t forgive those people.”
If they didn’t back down, they would eventually end up in an all-out war.
But Dayoung hated the idea of her companions getting hurt even more than she hated getting hurt herself.
