The Only Woman in a Zombie Apocalypse Vol. 2 Chapter 57 - Battle with Humans (1)
The men who had truly violated and trampled upon the real Dayoung.
Now, they had all vanished from this world. I sincerely hope that the real Dayoung’s heart has found even a little peace.
Dodam, who had been intently watching Dayoung check each of the men’s faces and shoot them, approached Hayun and whispered quietly.
“Doesn’t she seem like a completely different person at times like that? It’s strange, isn’t it?”
“Your way of speaking is even stranger. Why does she act like that whenever she holds a gun? I would’ve done the same. She probably didn’t even want to see their faces. No, even before that, she would’ve put a bullet in all their heads.”
“I feel the same. The world has really turned to shit. How can someone like that be called a soldier? Even if he had been our captain, I would’ve done the same.”
Dayoung, who had gone to check on the man who had run out to the front of the building, returned to the back of the building.
“Two people are missing.”
“What?”
“One of the two people driven out of the shopping mall and one man from the group are missing. Instead, there are two unfamiliar faces.”
“Then, they might still be nearby.”
As if by some unspoken agreement, the three raised their rifles and began checking the windows of the surrounding buildings.
They must be nearby…
Hearing the three’s conversation, the people in the shopping mall also picked up their binoculars and began scanning the area again.
―I don’t see them.
“If this were a place where they could be seen, we would’ve already shot them. They’re probably in a spot where they can’t be easily seen. Dohun, check around the eastern barricade. They might have been lying in ambush in advance, like the person on the rooftop.”
―Got it.
The three checked the building windows as they headed toward the barricaded area.
―Do you see the yellow building in the middle? That building and the one next to it. There’s one on the third floor of each, both on the side closest to the barricade.
“Got it.”
It seems they were lying in ambush in the buildings on either side of the barricade.
If the group had walked toward the barricade, they would have been killed before even reaching the men.
Dayoung laughed at the thought of them lying in ambush there.
“But. Are they stupid? I mean, who sets an ambush in a place like that? Did they think we’d just walk up to the barricade?”
“They’re just regular soldiers. Did you see their uniforms? Most of them were privates. What would new recruits know?”
“Even so. That’s really weird.”
―They’re still watching the shopping mall. They don’t seem to realize something’s happening over there.
“Or maybe they were waiting for us to finish and come back?”
“Well. That could be.”
The three of them reached near the building and split up, heading toward the back door. Hayun moved alone, and Dodam followed behind Dayoung.
Doing their best to muffle their footsteps, the three went up to the third floor and easily took care of the two men.
Since the two men were completely focused on the barricade, it was even easier to handle them.
With light hearts, the three walked along the barricade toward the shopping mall.
Just as the mall came into full view, Dodam, struck by a sudden thought, looked at Dayoung and spoke.
“Noona, earlier when we arrived…”
“Yeah.”
“You said ‘Tango,’ right?”
“Tango? Like the dance?”
“No. ‘Tango!’ (Target locked!), that’s what you said.”
Dodam patted his chest in frustration as he repeated himself, puzzled by Dayoung’s unexpected response. He was sure she had said it, and her sudden denial was confusing.
“I did?”
“Yeah, Dayoung said it earlier.”
“Right? You heard it too, hyung?”
“Let’s say I did say that. Why does it matter?”
“No, ‘Tango’ is a term used in the military. It’s a word used to refer to the enemy. Even if we assume that regular soldiers use it a lot, when I said ‘Wilco’ earlier, noona didn’t say anything. Most people would probably ask what that means. What people generally know is ‘Roger.’ But ‘Roger’ means the communication is clear, and ‘Wilco’ means the communication is clear, and I will comply with the orders. ‘Wilco’ is only used by special forces. It’s used during operations.”
“So?”
Dodam was flustered by Dayoung’s gaze, which seemed to ask why he was questioning her about such a thing.
“No. I’m asking how noona knows that word.”
“Huh?”
“It’s not like you suddenly felt like dancing and said Tango, right?”
“True. It felt so natural earlier that I didn’t think much of it, but hearing Dodam say that, it is kind of strange. I haven’t heard that word in a really long time either.”
“It just popped out? I don’t know why it came out.”
At Dayoung’s words, Dodam’s eyes widened.
No matter how much he thought about it, Dayoung seemed like a mysterious person at times.
An aura that made it impossible to see her as an ordinary person.
A trigger pulled without hesitation…
“Noona, what exactly are you? You said you’re a shooting athlete. Are you maybe a shooting athlete who’s been in the military?”
“No. I haven’t been to the military.”
“That’s weird. No matter how much I think about it, it’s weird.”
“Dodam. Don’t think too deeply about it. I don’t even know myself well yet. How could you possibly know me?”
“What are you talking about!”
What kind of talk is this now? Dodam’s mind began to grow complicated.
Since Dodam had heard that Dayoung had lost her memory and come to the shopping mall, he thought that she might not have fully recovered her memories yet.
Thinking that, he felt he had been too rude.
“No, noona. It’s possible. Even I, with my memory intact, sometimes get confused. Yeah, it’s totally possible.”
Dodam patted Dayoung on the shoulder and walked ahead.
Dayoung found Dodam’s behavior puzzling.
It seemed like a big misunderstanding, but since it was awkward for her to explain her situation, she decided to let it go. She wondered if there would ever come a day when she could tell everyone everything, but she soon chuckled to herself and entered the shopping mall.
The group enjoyed a heavy late lunch.
Since they decided to keep dinner simple with late-night snacks, Kijo showed off his cooking skills. He said that even the three who had gone outside and those who had been aiming their guns on the rooftop must have had a tough time.
“Still, it’s a relief that no one got hurt and everyone is safe like this. Let’s eat our fill and get a good rest today.”
At Ian’s words, the group raised their cups and cheered.
After eating her fill, Dayoung headed to the bathhouse. The warm shower made her body relaxed, and her thoughts grew heavier.
How many people had she killed since coming here?
Moreover, Dayoung’s actions today were ruthless by anyone’s standards. She had even pointed a gun at someone who was already dead. But she had been angry.
“On days like this, I wish I could just have steady sex, exhaust myself, and fall asleep.”
She knew she would toss and turn all night, unable to sleep. Just like the first time she killed someone. She felt a little scared of the person she was gradually becoming.
What if she really stopped being herself?
Coming here and actually meeting and touching my favorite characters was great, but sometimes when I feel this conflicted inside, I’m reminded of the peaceful reality I once had.
Even though every day was the same routine, it was a time of peace.
It’s not that I dislike this place, but no matter how good the physical pleasures are, sometimes it was scary and frightening.
The messed-up storyline, too.
And the existence of Dayoung, who never appeared in the original. It felt like I was gradually falling into an unfathomable abyss.
“Do you want to go back? To reality?”
But I also felt like I’d regret it if I went back. The bleak reality where there’s no one to love and no one to love me.
The tedious daily grind of being a slave to work, living the same day over and over again.
If I went back, I knew I’d miss this place…
“The human heart is so fickle. How wonderful would it be to have these handsome men in a peaceful reality!”
After showering with cold water, Dayoung heartily ate late-night snacks with the group and returned to her room.
Wearing sexy sleepwear, she lay on the bed to change her mood.
Tossing and turning, Dayoung glanced at the clock. It was past 11 p.m. The quiet shopping mall felt unnervingly eerie today for no reason.
“I just can’t do this. I need to grab some beer. On days like this, I can’t sleep sober.”
Dayoung roughly threw a long cardigan over her sleepwear and headed to the basement bar. The group never drinks excessively because of the next day’s plans.
Drinking sessions usually end before 10 p.m., so the bar was quiet.
Except for one person sitting in a corner.
“Hayun oppa. Why are you here alone instead of sleeping?”
Before approaching Hayun, Dayoung made sure her cardigan was properly fastened. She was being a little cautious because Hayun hadn’t been here long.
But seeing Hayun sitting in the bar, she remembered how he had fiercely sucked on her slit just a while ago, and her body flinched.
‘You pervert. Stop it, stop!’
“Dayoung, why are you out instead of sleeping?”
“Just thought I’d grab a beer or something.”
“Yeah? Well, want to drink together? I can’t sleep tonight either.”
She had seemed fine when eating a late lunch and late-night snacks with the group, but Hayun’s face looked unusually dark today, so Dayoung took a can of beer from the refrigerator and sat next to him.
“Is something worrying you?”
“No. It’s nothing. Just work during the day. I can’t sleep. You?”
“Me too…”
Dayoung opened the beer can and took a sip.
