‘I don’t know.’
The atmosphere was seriously bad, so I turned my head away and pretended not to notice.
“Young master. Sir Krius committed a grave sin against the evil spirit. As an act of repentance, he is offering her a weapon. As for how things came to this…”
In the meantime, Adolf laid out every detail for Basileon without omission.
“A-Adolf!”
“And that is how it happened. The Death Scythe was chosen personally by the evil spirit.”
Krius’s complexion went beyond pale, almost turning translucent.
“M-My lord! I—I’m terribly sorry…! I have committed a sin worthy of death!”
With that, he dropped to his knees before Basileon.
‘Why go that far…?’
What Krius had done to me was truly infuriating, but was it really something worth kneeling before Basileon for?
“Evil spirit. It is a well-known fact that the Young Master treasures you dearly.”
As if reading my thoughts, Adolf explained the situation to me.
“If anything were to happen to you, the young master might truly reduce everything to ruins.”
“Please, spare me!”
Krius pressed his forehead to the floor. Basileon glanced at his own flamberge, then shifted his gaze to the weapons of the ghost knight order. After that, he began to walk toward them at a slow pace.
“…”
Among them, he examined a suitable longsword and casually took it into his hand.
“Would this be enough to tear a ghost’s limbs apart?”
“It could tear off limbs, but complete annihilation would be difficult.”
Adolf answered in place of the trembling Krius. True to a horror game, the exchange was chilling.
“I—I was wrong! Please, spare me!”
“Everyone says that. But the simplest solution is not to commit wrongdoing in the first place.”
Basileon pressed the longsword to Krius’s throat.
“The weapons modified by Crimson can inflict pain on ghosts, correct?”
“Ghk… ghk….”
Perhaps overcome by fear, Krius let out a strange sound. Honestly, even if Krius were to be annihilated, it wouldn’t really matter to me.
‘Still, his talent would be a bit of a waste.’
Basileon took a stance as if he were truly about to swing the sword. It was a touch-and-go moment. Then Adolf cautiously spoke up.
“Th-That is… young master. Before that, there is something I should inform you of. I’m not sure if you’re aware, but Sir Krius is a descendant of the world-renowned blacksmith Wolfron.”
At Adolf’s addition, Basileon halted mid-motion.
“…Wolfron?”
His reaction suggested the name meant nothing to him, which left me bewildered instead.
‘He’s the vice-captain of the Ravenwood knight order—did he seriously not know?’
Basileon turned his gaze back to his flamberge.
“My flamberge. Wolfron, who forged the Ravenwood family’s heirloom…”
My eyes widened naturally, but Adolf looked as though he had known this from the start.
‘I suppose there’s no way Adolf, the armory keeper with all those connections, wouldn’t know.’
Basileon met the eyes of the kneeling Krius.
“Yeah. A descendant of Wolfron. How unexpected.”
And then—
“But so what?”
*…Huh?*
It felt as though Basileon had reverted to a vicious murderer once more. His red eyes were steeped in killing intent, with not a trace of mercy to be found.
“Eve is afraid of fire. No—she utterly despises it.”
Whoosh—
The sound of flames flaring up echoed from somewhere.
“Adolf, take Eve away so she doesn’t have to see this.”
“…Yes.”
I stared at Adolf, completely dumbfounded. Then, Adolfspoke in a quiet, warning tone.
“Let’s do as the young master says.”
“Did you know? That the flames of the flamberge are not the sword’s inherent ability.”
Whoosh—
Pretending to follow Adolf, I glanced back—and the sight was shocking. A regular longsword, not the flamberge, was engulfed in flames.
“M-My lord!”
“That means no matter what you do, you cannot keep up with me.”
At that moment, I saw blue-white flames bloom.
*T-That isn’t the sword’s innate power?*
I hurriedly stopped and called out to Adolf.
“A-Adolf, wait!”
I stared at him in panic, but Adolf was already standing there, stunned.
“Evil spirit. Do you know what that is?”
“When a flame reaches its highest temperature, it turns blue-white, right?”
“…Yes. It will reduce everything to ruins!”
‘‘Ruins…? This ducal castle, the Ravenwood territory—collapsing into ruin?’
Adolf belatedly ran toward Basileon.
“You mustn’t! Young master!”
A colossal blaze that seemed ready to burst through the ceiling. A sight that would turn anything it touched to ash.
“Wow…”
For some reason, the blue-white flames entering my vision were beautiful. But they were just as terrifying. Once again, my body began reacting to the fire. My heart pounded, and my muscles stiffened.
‘Oh no.’
A fine tremor ran through my body, and I couldn’t move.
‘I shouldn’t have stayed to watch….’
Slowly, gradually, I sank once more into a vast, lightless abyss.
* * *
‘This place…’
When I regained consciousness, I was lying inside an unfamiliar room. The fabric softly surrounding the bed tickled my face. I slowly climbed out of the canopy bed. Then, I looked into the mirror on the vanity and….
‘Evien?’
Only then did I realize that I had traveled through time once again. The woman in the mirror was the most beautiful person I had ever seen in my life. Silvery hair, smooth and flowing like silk. Dreamlike violet eyes. This might have been the first time I had seen her appearance so clearly, rather than through Basileon’s eyes. I stared blankly, then felt the corners of my lips move. The woman in the mirror beamed, admiring her own smile. This time, she raised her hand to touch her face directly—twirling strands of hair around her fingers, feeling its texture, her expression filled with satisfaction.
“As expected, it was a good choice.”
My lips moved, voicing the words.
‘A good choice?’
It almost looked like a noblewoman pleased with her skincare and hair treatments. Knock, knock—just then, someone knocked on the door.
“Evien, are you inside?”
“Yes, Mother.”
The door opened, and Evien’s mother entered the room.
“Come to eat. Your father is waiting with you.”
“…Father?”
“He just returned home. He wishes to see you.”
“I had no idea he was back.”
I smiled brightly at my mother.
“He returned without notice on purpose. It seems he bought you a gift, so come down quickly.”
“Yes, Mother.”
After she left, I was alone again. When I looked at the mirror, my expression was harsh, unlike before.
‘W-What is this?’
That suspicious feeling I’d had during the last time travel returned. Soon, the maids entered the room. They dressed me in an evening gown and groomed me appropriately. What I noticed while being prepared was that the maids were walking on eggshells around me. I could feel some of them trembling or visibly nervous. I remembered the incident where Evien had two maids dismissed when she was eleven. An incident that seemed entirely intentional.
‘Based on what I saw last time, it makes sense.’
After finishing the preparations, I walked alone to the dining room.
Then—
“…Those idiots are such a nuisance.”
‘What?’
I was shocked by the words that had just come out of my mouth.
‘Was I… some infamous villainess? Was being villainess a requirement to become an evil spirit?’
There was no way a simple escape horror game would include a villain’s past. Maybe I’d been too naive. I never expected something like this.
“Oh, Evien.”
As I entered the dining room, a man I assumed to be my father greeted me warmly. I embraced him and exchanged pleasantries.
“I bought you a gift—you’ll probably like it.”
What he gave me was a beautifully gleaming jeweled ornament. Even to someone ignorant like me, it looked valuable.
“It’s so beautiful… Thank you, Father.”
I smiled brightly once more. Considering my earlier muttering, this smile felt forced. My father seemed to have something on his mind and spoke up.
“Evien. You’ve come of age now—it’s time you married.”
“Yes. I want to marry someone of my own choosing, Father.”
“I have no intention of forcing a political marriage. However, if he is a solid man holding a title of count or higher, I will respect your wishes.”
‘Oh…. That’s unexpected.’
A count who wouldn’t force a political marriage—he was the ideal father of a daughter. And he seemed kind and generous, too.
“There is already someone I hold dear, Father.”
“…May I know who it is?”
“His Excellency The Duke of Ravenwood. He is the one I want.”
