‘This person is dangerous.’

Yeom Juwan’s instincts lit up a warning signal.

The man before his eyes was an enemy he couldn’t handle. He could feel the overwhelming difference in power from the aura emanating from him.

But this was the one who’d given orders to kill Sora.

He couldn’t let him pass through here.

‘Block him.’

Whoooosh!

The flame dragon responded to Yeom Juwan’s will. Flames exceeding 2,000 degrees opened wide and sank teeth into the man’s left arm.

Fire that could melt human skin in an instant, but the man in the white mask remained composed. When the man waved his hand dismissively—KRAKOOM!

The flame dragon flew through the air and crashed into the ground. The dragon the size of a three-story building flew like it was nothing more than a bug.

Snap!

When the man flicked his fingers, a strange ripple occurred on the floor. Shadows.

The shadows moved toward the fallen flame dragon with bizarre movements like alien lifeforms.

Hissssss—

The flame dragon turned black. The black dragon shook its head left and right as it rose to its feet.

Soon it began floating in the air, performing violent dances. Leaping left and right with fierce intensity. Following the direction the man waved his hand.

[Fascinating.]

The commands to return and stop didn’t work. The black dragon had already escaped Yeom Juwan’s control.

The man in the white mask had completely hijacked it.

[Killing Yeon Sora with this could be quite entertaining, hehe.]

Fwooosh—

The floating black dragon scattered.

Yeom Juwan had simultaneously shattered all the flame rings composing the dragon. The majestic dragon form turned to pathetic ash in an instant.

“Huff… huff….”

Only the sound of breathing filled his ears. His vision remained blurry. But he had to stop this man. Somehow.

Yeom Juwan closed his eyes and grasped the solid particles within himself. Using them as flint to strike together.

Snap! Snap!

A small spark appeared in the air. Pouring mana into this ember would make it blaze like oil on flames.

When he searched through his entire body for fuel, the man in the white mask casually grabbed the ember.

Hissssss—

The last ember extinguished inside his fist.

[You pathetic fool, do you think you have mana left after burning through all that?]

Yeom Juwan’s mana had bottomed out from continuous combat.

He couldn’t use flame magic anymore.

‘Then….’

Yeom Juwan moved his right hand. His hand was heavy from physical exhaustion, but overcoming a thousand-pound weight, he gripped the pistol in his pocket.

If he used Incapacitation rounds…

WHAM!

His body suddenly flew upward as intense pain erupted from his back. Something was strongly constricting his neck.

The man had grabbed Yeom Juwan’s throat with one hand and slammed him into the castle wall.

Pain like his spine was crumbling. His airway blocked, he couldn’t breathe properly.

[I was curious about this too. Where did it come from?]

The man was examining the pistol he’d snatched from Yeom Juwan’s hand. He couldn’t answer.

The pressure squeezing his throat grew stronger. A cough involuntarily escaped, but Yeom Juwan pressed his lips together and didn’t let even the cough out.

Then the eerie white mask drew close.

[You smell delicious.]

The mask sniffed around his neck.

Soon a chill rose from the soles of his feet. A tingling sensation like frostbite took over his entire body.

[With this talent and this inferiority complex… excellent ingredients.]

Snap!

When the man flicked his fingers, the sound of shuffling footsteps approached.

Charred skin. Red flesh exposed through melted, drooping skin. Those who’d died from burns.

[Your handiwork.]

In the process of rushing to defend the castle gate, he’d ended up killing people after all. He’d wanted to avoid killing as much as possible, but they hadn’t backed down.

“It wasn’t my fault.”

Simultaneously with his answer, sharp icicles pierced through his skin and froze to the bone.

Astaroth created cracks through a person’s sense of guilt and infiltrated inside.

[As expected, you’re weak.]

Snap!

His vision went dark.

* * *

Unfathomable darkness.

A space where even space itself couldn’t be felt.

Yeom Juwan opened his eyes within it and looked around, but nothing was visible.

All five senses had vanished. His consciousness floated detached from his body.

Tap!

Suddenly images unfolded. Like old film, countless squares flowed past like a panorama.

From newborn infant to the present. All of Yeom Juwan’s memories became a single film rewinding.

[This is beyond imagination.]

The man’s voice could be heard, but his form wasn’t visible. This place wasn’t space to begin with.

He could see ahead, but it was different from seeing with eyes.

The screen showed an orange-haired baby.

Grabbing onto a doghouse set up in one corner of an apartment balcony, pulling itself upright. Trying to step forward to walk, but wobbling and plopping down.

The baby soon gave up and crawled on all fours into the doghouse, curling up its body. The unwashed body was covered in dust. Anyone could see it was more beast than human.

A shrill voice echoed from the living room.

— What? Give that parasite a room?

— They’re coming for inspections now. We can’t show them that sight.

— Ugh, that brat grows so fast!

A childhood even Yeom Juwan himself couldn’t remember.

Laughter echoed from all around.

[As expected, excellent ingredients. Harvesting this should yield considerable quantity.]

The film played rapidly as the screen flowed at high speed. Then stopped.

— Meal time! Today we even have beef!

— Kyaa! Look at them sitting side by side!!!

Yeon Sora’s house.

The auntie was hugging the five-year-old Yeom Juwan so tightly he couldn’t breathe. The grandfather and grandmother competed to pile meat onto his rice bowl.

— I don’t need any. My babies need to eat!

Young Yeom Juwan couldn’t use chopsticks yet. Using his fingers, he placed meat onto Yeon Sora’s rice bowl. Then Yeon Sora grabbed the meat with her hand and forcibly pushed it into Yeom Juwan’s mouth.

— Aaah! I can’t take it!!!! Don’t Sora and Juwan look like twins?

The family members laughed delightedly saying it was adorable.

But young Yeom Juwan’s eyes held anxiety.

People who gave love without reservation, warm people—but extreme poverty made even children read the room.

Especially for a freeloader who’d heard himself called a parasite.

[Interesting. So you suppressed your growth to stay beside Yeon Sora?]

His childhood alongside Yeon Sora continued flowing past.

Kindergarten days holding hands walking side by side.

Elementary school days sitting at desks as seatmates, middle school appearances wearing uniforms.

In every image, the two people’s heights were similar.

[Suppressing biological growth through willpower… this is beyond imagination.]

He’d never done such a thing.

His small height was Yeom Juwan’s complex. He’d constantly thought he wanted to grow as tall as other kids, wanted to at least reach average height.

But… if he grew taller, he’d have to sit in back, separating him from Yeon Sora. That would be troublesome—he’d thought that too.

The man in the white mask mercilessly dug through his memories, exposing facts even Yeom Juwan didn’t know about himself.

Middle school days, birthday parties, field trips…

Before he knew it, the images reached entrance exam day.

Then Yeom Juwan’s heart turned cold.

‘He can’t find out.’

At this rate, Sora’s secret would be discovered.

Scenes of her crying her eyes out saying she had strange dreams. Those scenes where she trembled with a pale face saying the world would be destroyed.

He hadn’t entirely believed Sora’s dreams, but now he knew. These people were the existences appearing in Sora’s dreams.

Absolutely… he couldn’t let them find out.

That Sora saw the future.

‘This man is investigating Sora through me.’

Realizing that fact, Yeom Juwan closed his heart.

So he couldn’t let them access any memories with Yeon Sora in them.

[…Troublesome bastard.]

The man tried to forcibly open the memories, but Yeom Juwan was like a living clam. He locked away and sealed only the memories with Yeon Sora.

Images still flowed on screen.

But only images of when Yeom Juwan acted alone appeared.

Scenes of 2-on-1 sparring with Lee Hyojun and No Jitae at the training ground, Min Dorim’s special training, watching and analyzing seniors’ training…

Not a single scene with Yeon Sora appeared.

Snap!

The screen went dark, leaving only darkness. A piercing chill wrapped around his entire body, freezing to the bone. Only a chilling voice echoed in the blackness.

[You idiot, do you think Yeon Sora truly accepted a parasite like you?]

The word ‘parasite’ stabbed at his heart, but… it was different from before.

Previously it was pain like being stabbed with a knife, but now it was dull pain like bumping into a desk and getting bruised.

Not painful enough to cry out.

[Yeon Sora is a wicked bitch. She’s exploiting you while holding your unfortunate past.]

The stinging pain evaporated instantly.

Like being ejected from an engrossing novel, consciousness separated coldly.

[She recognized your potential and kept you by her side to use you!]

Yeom Juwan’s eyes turned icily cold. Not much different from a reader ejected from their immersion due to character collapse.

This person knew too little about Sora.

[What do you think that bitch will do when you lose your power!]

She’d probably just shrug. She might even call an emergency meeting. Saying something like ‘Now that Juwan’s become trash too, how about recruiting new members?’

Sora stayed by his side not because of flame magic. Even if his awakened ability disappeared, they’d still be together.

He was certain. No room for doubt to seep in.

[You’re being deceived by Yeon Sora! Don’t you know that bitch only lies!]

He knew. From the moment she rescinded the promise to ‘hide nothing,’ she’d essentially declared she’d lie from now on.

Sora always knew what mattered most.

Lies and such couldn’t separate the two of them.

What needed protecting wasn’t truth or anything like that.

The truly important promise was….

* * *

Snap!

The darkness vanished and bodily sensation returned.

Yeom Juwan lay on the stone floor gasping for breath.

[Let’s test it. Whether you’ll protect that bitch’s secret even after being betrayed.]

He could feel the man’s rage through the white mask.

He hadn’t obtained what he wanted.

Snap!

Yeom Juwan stood up. But not by his own will. His limbs moved on their own.

One undead approached and handed him a spear, and Yeom Juwan’s hands gripped it tightly.

This wasn’t an action he wanted either.

‘He’s… controlling my body?’

[What will Yeon Sora do when someone precious as family attacks her?]

Only then did Yeom Juwan realize the man’s intent.

He was going to kill Yeon Sora using Yeom Juwan’s body.

[Will she kill you to survive? Or will she sacrifice herself to save you?]

As expected, this person didn’t know Sora.

Sora would never choose just one. When he reached that realization, Yeom Juwan’s heart stopped.

[Hehe, so you fear death. It’s tragic to die by the hand of someone you cherish most. This makes you question why you were born and why you existed.]

The man had a huge misunderstanding.

Yeom Juwan wasn’t engaged in that kind of existential anguish. He was imagining a thoroughly practical crisis.

— I’ll just die.

Sora wouldn’t hesitate at all.

If they couldn’t both live, they’d both die.

She might even attempt negotiations with the man in the white mask. Asking him not to damage the corpses since they’d both die together.

After the man left, they could eat Medusa’s pills and revive.

‘Then… would she become like that?’

Yeom Juwan turned his gaze to look at the surrounding undead.

He wasn’t afraid of becoming like that himself. But Sora becoming a walking corpse was worse than dying.

[Depart.]

Yeom Juwan’s body faithfully began walking forward. Forcibly stopping his feet was useless.

Sticky black shadows clung all over his body. The shadows suppressed Yeom Juwan’s will with force and advanced.

As resistance intensified, the man scoffed.

[Hehe, seems even you lack confidence.]

It would be better if Sora betrayed him.

She’d run out without a moment’s hesitation.

Before he knew it, he’d entered Zone 1.

Fields everywhere. Just a bit further and the safe zone would appear. Just five more minutes of walking. Physical force couldn’t stop this.

‘Mana is….’

None. But….

Min Dorim’s voice echoed in his ears.

— You just light the ember and burn surrounding mana as firewood. Then consumption is nearly zero.

The technique Yeon Sora called infinite charging. He’d heard the tip repeatedly but had never succeeded. Still, now he had to try anything.

Yeom Juwan closed his eyes and grasped the solid particles within. Using them as flint to strike together.

Snap! Snap! Whoosh!

A small ember appeared in the air.

Pouring mana into this…

Hissssss—

The ember disappeared. The man in the white mask had extinguished the fire barehanded again.

[You idiot, don’t you know your flames can’t burn me?]

That was true.

The man was immune to Yeom Juwan’s flame magic. However,

“I wasn’t trying to use my flames.”

While the man flinched, Yeom Juwan struck the particles together again.

Snap! Snap!

His mana was already exhausted. But this shadow stuck all over his body was also an Awakened using mana. He didn’t know how to do it.

But his body moved before his head. He had to kindle the ember using the shadow as fuel. Somehow.

If he couldn’t…

Snap! Snap! Whoosh!

[New skill has awakened.]
