Originally, my plan was to possess Park Seungsoo one more time to have him send me the data or simply make a direct confession.

Whether it was a witness investigation or not, as long as physical evidence was on Park Seungsoo’s phone, an arrest could be made on the spot.

After that, further digging would have surely revealed more data.

People in Park Seungsoo’s position are forced to collect insurance files in case they are ever discarded.

But then, this happened.

An unexpected variable named Byeon Gudo suddenly popped up. He didn’t just dig up Park Seungsoo; he completely cleaned out all the supply corruption files gathered at AC Manufacturing—including receipt statements of the money that changed hands with Cha Jeonhyeok’s direct involvement—and emailed them to me.

‘Why on earth?’

A lingering question remained, but somehow, given the atmosphere, I couldn’t ask right away.

‘You definitely deleted the email I sent, right? Without opening it?’

‘Pardon? Ah… yes, well.’

‘Good, good. You have to delete things like that immediately. You know? Hmmmmm?’

How was I supposed to ask when Byeon Gudo was giving me those looks with his eyes wide and rolling!

‘Ah, I’m scared to death, seriously!’

Thanks to that, I couldn’t even report to Team Leader Pi; instead, I was immediately summoned by Kwon Ikseong.

And fortunately, a natural opportunity arose to leak the story that the ‘supply items’ had been abruptly replaced while Hong Jaegyeol was also present.

Our Ikseong, of course, did not miss that remark.

If the problem was that the supply items had been suddenly changed, then it might not have been the mistake of the Team 1 investigators.

However, even for an A-rank hunter like Ikseong who was a legend in the investigation department, intervening in another department’s affairs was no easy task. It could have put Hong Jaegyeol in a difficult position as well.

That was when I released the recording.

The recording where Cha Jeonhyeok directly gave instructions to Park Seungsoo.

‘Why do you have this?’

‘I wonder why too….’

‘What?’

‘No, I mean…. I also received it from an anonymous informant. Perhaps because I’ve been in the media lately, they thought I was the most trustworthy person within the Hunter Investigation Bureau….’

It’s a bit embarrassing to say stuff like this with my own mouth!

‘I think they reported it to me.’

‘Is it someone from the AC Manufacturing side?’

Ikseong asked, but I kept my mouth shut. I couldn’t exactly say, “That informant is the guy who plays internet Go-Stop all day in our team!” right?

But as if my silence were some kind of hint, Ikseong sent me a look as if he understood.

‘I have no choice but to let him misunderstand….’

Ikseong is such an honest and kind person that every time I deceive him, I feel like I’ve become a bad person!

‘Technically, it’s not even a lie!’

Anyway, once the conversation reached this point, Hong Jaegyeol’s expression hardened.

I think I heard that Cha Jeonhyeok and Hong Jaegyeol were from the same graduating class and had known each other for a long time—

‘Is he hesitating because of a personal relationship?’

In the world of civil servants, internal whistleblowing is an extremely sensitive issue.

Isn’t there a famous maxim among civil servants?

‘I won’t get fired, but neither will they!’

Because it’s not easy for civil servants to be dismissed, if internal whistleblowing leads to disciplinary action, there is a high possibility they will meet again down the line. If Hong Jaegyeol was also worried about such matters—

It was just as I was thinking that.

Crackle.

‘…?’

The tin case containing the medicinal snacks Hong Jaegyeol was holding was crushed in his hand. Ah, right. This man was also a B-rank hunter. I gulped as I looked at Hong Jaegyeol.

‘Kwon Ikseong.’

Hong Jaegyeol looked at Kwon Ikseong with a sharp gaze he didn’t often show.

‘Don’t worry about the Chief or anything else; go and charge in. Shake them down until there’s nothing left. You can do that, right?’

‘….’

‘If I catch you going easy on them just because they’re “family”—’

Hong Jaegyeol’s eyes turned cold.

The atmosphere was completely different from when he was smiling goofily at me and asking for an interview.

‘I won’t leave you alone.’

Thinking about it again gives me the chills.

Recalling Hong Jaegyeol’s gaze, I finished the interrogation with the trembling Park Seungsoo.

“I—I really didn’t know and did it! Really…!”

“Ah…. So even though you received these instructions, you unknowingly mixed defective items into the handcuffs? That’s truly amazing! Wow!”

I looked at Park Seungsoo with innocent eyes and my hands clasped together.

“So, what you’re saying right now is that you didn’t know the fact that if you mix defectives into the handcuffs, an investigator could die or be injured while arresting criminals?”

I opened my eyes wide and spoke clearly.

“Wow! I guess that’s possible!”

“I—I’m sorry….”

“No! I’ll make sure to put it in the interrogation transcript exactly like that. That you really didn’t know!”

Park Seungsoo shook his hands frantically at my words and said:

“No! It’s not like that! It’s not that I didn’t know that…! What I mean is, since Chief Cha Jeonhyeok kept giving me those orders, I thought there was some reason for it on the HIB’s level when he did that!”

“Ah. So you’re admitting that Chief Cha Jeonhyeok gave you the order to mix defectives into the handcuffs you were supplying?”

“…Pardon?”

It was safe to say the interrogation was a definitive success.

* * *

After deciding to order some blood sausage soup for Park Seungsoo—whose status had changed from witness to suspect—Kwon Ikseong and I left the interrogation room.

Kwon Ikseong stopped in the middle of walking down the hallway and stared at me intently.

“Would you like to have a meal together for a moment?”

“Pardon? Oh….”

Wait. Saying something like that is too….

“Heart-fluttering.”

“Pardon?”

Kwon Ikseong’s brow furrowed.

“Ah. Just now, my inner thoughts came out of my mouth….”

At my words, Kwon Ikseong’s face contorted subtly before a small smile appeared.

‘Wow…. Ikseong is smiling.’

The sight of a smile on a superior who was always so upright.

Moreover, that person is my favorite character.

My heart felt like it was going to explode, so I instinctively clutched my chest.

“You’re an interesting person, Investigator Lee Yuji.”

Even the way Ikseong slightly bowed his head while saying those words was insanely cool.

However, the meal that followed could hardly be called a heart-fluttering date with my favorite character.

“…So you meant eating blood sausage soup together in an interrogation room.”

This was because our meal began with two bowls of blood sausage soup placed in an interrogation room different from the one where Park Seungsoo was being questioned.

“Yes. Do you not like blood sausage?”

Ikseong asked as he naturally added pepper to his soup.

“I love it.”

It was the truth.

Ever since I possessed Lulu, I’ve found myself reflexively drooling whenever I see blood sausage.

Just as there are people who couldn’t eat grilled tripe but then discover its true taste after having a delicious batch, I discovered the true taste of blood sausage after possessing Lulu.

Even so, since I was in front of my favorite character, I tried to eat as gracefully as possible.

But then—

“You seem to have a talent for interrogating criminals.”

“Oh…. Is that so? Haha.”

As I answered vaguely while munching on a mouth full of blood sausage, Ikseong hesitated for a moment before throwing an unexpected question at me.

“May I ask a personal question? You don’t have to answer if it makes you uncomfortable.”

“Yes, sure.”

Sundae is delicious, hee-hee. Sundae, sundae, sundae~

While I was thinking about things like that, Ikseong’s question pierced through.

“Do you perhaps have a lover or a man you are in a close relationship with?”

…?

…?

?

I looked at Kwon Ikseong’s stoic face with about five question marks floating over my head.

Seeing my expression, Kwon Ikseong corrected his own words.

“Ah, it could be a woman. My apologies.”

No… that’s not the problem here, is it?

  1. Well, knowing Ikseong, it’s not THAT type of a question. Probably something to do with her abilities, isn’t it?
