‘Did I make a mistake?!’

There was no way I had.

He knew very well how terrible the test drug was, since he had experienced it himself before.

But aside from its extremely cruel effects, it was not a difficult drug to make.

Besides, this was not his first time making it.

‘I definitely mixed it properly so that eating just one cookie would make them fall asleep immediately, while the other effects would slowly take effect…….’

But Rookie was now showing symptoms that could appear if someone took too much of the test drug.

However, he could not step in just because the test subject looked like he was in pain.

That was how the final test for the Crows worked.

Whether they could not endure the test drug or could not keep the secret.

The result of failing was death, and nothing else.

Even as Noah Benton nervously watched the situation, squeezing the sleeve of his clothes, the test continued to grow more intense.

“Answer properly!”

Dimarck Shuren roughly scolded Rookie as he pushed a sharp wooden awl into his shoulder.

From the outside, it might look like nothing more than bullying that caused a little bleeding, but the pain must have been impossible to even imagine.

It was because of the test drug, which confused the senses while making the sense of pain extremely sensitive.

It was probably like the pain of a sharp object digging between the shoulder bones and tearing the nerves apart piece by piece.

Noah Benton shrank back just from imagining it.

“Ugh!”

Blue veins stood out on Rookie’s neck where his shoulder had been stabbed, and blood flowed from his tightly clenched lips.

It was the result of a defense mechanism kicking in, creating another kind of pain to forget the extreme pain he was already feeling.

“I told you, you picked the wrong person, damn it. Hngh!”

Runelk Eins’s personality, way of thinking, and even his secret preferences.

The test, which had begun by digging into the depths of his unconscious mind, was now slowly approaching its final stage.

This was the stage where they tested whether he was someone who could protect the secrets of the Crows and the Nest.

It was also the stage where most Crow candidates were eliminated.

“I already told you that excuse won’t work. We’ve been treating you far too gently until now, haven’t we?”

Gisela Lott clicked her tongue as she picked up a thicker, sharper wooden awl.

Then she slowly rubbed the tip of the awl against Rookie’s eyebrow and threatened him in a sinister voice.

“From now on, every time you give a wrong answer, I’ll ruin one part of you. We’ll start here, with your left eye. This is going to be on a completely different level from what we’ve done so far.”

“You crazy bastard…….”

Even as he cursed, Rookie’s eyelashes trembled.

It was because he was afraid of the pain that would soon come and terrified that he might lose one of his eyes.

Rookie had not broken even when faced with the pain intensified by the drug since the test began, but Gisela Lott persistently attacked the first weakness he had shown.

“Think carefully, Runelk Eins. We already know about Knox’s secret organization.”

“……Are you deaf? I told you, hngh, so many times that I don’t know. I’m, I’m just an action squad member…….”

“Shh. If you keep saying nonsense and make me angry, I might just stab you, you know?”

“Ugh…….”

When she roughly grabbed his chin with one hand, Rookie’s entire face twisted in pain.

Even the strength of her grip alone caused enough pain to make his vision spin.

But what if something really pierced his eyeball?

‘Am I going to break here?’

Dimarck Shuren coldly watched Rookie’s reaction, which had now begun to tremble.

The fear of being permanently disabled.

It was a point that many test subjects ultimately could not overcome.

“So all you have to do is tell us their names and where their headquarters are. Then it will all be over, okay?”

Gisela Lott whispered as if trying to comfort him.

“If it’s too hard to explain everything, how about just nodding your head? I’ll name the places, and when I say the right one, you just nod. It’s not difficult, is it?”

“I have to know something, hngh, to be able to tell you anything.”

He was still denying everything, but Rookie’s voice was much weaker than before.

It was proof that he was thinking about it.

Gisela Lott had given him a way out, so now it was Dimarck Shuren’s turn.

“I understand your loyalty to the organization. But think carefully, Runelk Eins. Is it really worth it?”

“Ugh! Ghk!”

The wooden awl in his hand moved as if stirring up the wound in Rookie’s shoulder.

“The wounds you’ve gotten so far will cause you trouble for a while, but they won’t leave any lasting effects. I’m an expert in that area, after all.”

Dimarck Shuren laughed like a villain.

Since he was a veteran of the Punishment Department, it was not entirely a lie.

“But your eyes are different. One eye? Sure, you can live without it. But what about both eyes?”

“My eyes…….”

“For your information, your ears are next. I’ll shove one of these into each ear.”

“I’ll pull out your teeth last, though. It’s hard to speak properly without teeth, isn’t it? And there are the tendons in both your legs, too. There are plenty of places I can ruin.”

Gisela Lott laughed once more, as if joining in with Dimarck’s cruel joke, but her eyes remained completely cold.

A Crow who had been crippled by torture.

For Gisela Lott, it was still a wound that had not healed into a scar.

Seeing the darkness in her junior’s eyes, Dimarck Shuren decided that it was time to finish the test.

“Hey, Runelk Eins.”

There was one final question left, the most deadly and cruel one.

“If you can’t see, hear, or walk anymore, will that organization still want you?”

Rookie’s shoulders flinched.

The reward for loyalty was, in the end, a sense of belonging.

It was the feeling and pride of knowing that, just as much as I was sacrificing for this organization, they also needed me.

“Even if you keep the secret and are lucky enough to go back, there won’t be a place for you anymore after you’ve already been completely ruined. In the end, they’ll forget you. And they’ll move forward. Leaving only you behind, a useless cripple who is no longer of any value to the organization.”

It had only been a little over a week since he first entered the Nest.

It was a question meant to shake the very foundation of a new candidate who was probably drunk on the sweet excitement of becoming a member of the Crows and becoming part of something important and enormous.

“And even then, you’re going to keep your mouth shut? While feeling the pain of your eyeballs being pierced and your tendons being cut? What exactly are you doing it all for?”

“Hngh…….”

In the end, a low groan escaped Rookie’s lips.

His lips, covered in dried blood, trembled slightly.

His breathing, which had been fast but regular, also became uneven.

They were all signs that he was breaking down.

‘Is he going to fail again this time?’

A faint look of disappointment passed through the eyes of the watching Crows.

Whatever happened, they had to see the test through to the end, so Gisela Lott moved.

“Just nod your head, Runelk Eins.”

She slowly moved the awl beneath Rookie’s eye.

So that it poked his tender flesh.

Watching his blurry blue eyes tremble with fear of the approaching pain because the drug had made it impossible for him to focus, she asked,

“Where is the secret organization’s headquarters? The Knox main building?”

Gisela Lott pressed the tip of the awl down hard enough to make a small dent in his flesh and waited.

She expected Runelk Eins’s head to move up and down.

But after a brief hesitation, he opened his mouth.

“If you’re going to stab me, then stab me quickly, you idiots.”

“……What?”

“You, hngh, keep talking…… I don’t understand a single thing you’re saying.”

Rookie glared straight at Gisela Lott with narrowed eyes and said,

“You grab the wrong person, hngh, and torture them…… does that make you happy?”

There was mockery mixed into his gasping breaths.

“Secret organization or whatever, hngh, you crazy bastards. Stab me. Go ahead and stab me.”

Instead of trying to avoid it, he even pushed his head toward the awl, and Gisela Lott hurriedly pulled it back.

She had almost really stabbed his eye.

Unable to know what she was doing because his vision had been distorted by the drug, Rookie continued to taunt her.

“If you’re going to pick someone, at least pick the right person. You picked an orphan like me, hng, who has nothing to lose. I already, hng, didn’t feel like living anyway, so this worked out. What are you waiting for? Hurry up and, kill me…….”

“Enough.”

Dimark Shuren removed his mask and spoke in a low voice.

His face, revealed under the dim lighting of the underground prison, was twisted into a grim expression.

“That’s enough. You can stop now.”
