The day she was to leave the County of Basilian was peaceful.

Kiern left the house as usual, and the twins who came to harass Chesha were taken away by Belzeon.

Left alone, Chesha sat in her room writing a letter.

She thought it would be nice to leave behind a letter as a beautiful parting gesture.

“Humph…”

But writing with her small hands wasn’t easy.

No matter what she wrote, her messy handwriting was hard to read.

With a frustrated sigh, Chesha gave up, crumpling the paper in her hand.

She didn’t really have anything to say anyway.

What could she possibly write to someone she was running away from?

Deciding to give up completely, Chesha sat by the window with Hata, eating a snack.

Today’s snack was muffins filled with milk and chocolate.

Normally, dogs shouldn’t eat chocolate, but Hata was a shapeshifter who happily shared muffins with Chesha.

Chesha picked up a muffin and looked out the window.

Newly planted pink rose bushes adorned the beautifully landscaped garden.

They were the same variety as the roses she’d seen with Kiern in the rose gardens of the Imperial Palace that day.

Perhaps Kiern had ordered this new garden to be planted.

No matter how he did it, it was remarkable that these flowers bloomed fresher and more vibrant than the roses in the Imperial Garden.

“….”

Even if she was leaving the Count’s mansion, she would still miss the garden a little.

Chesha nibbled on the chocolate muffin, feeling sentimental.

‘With this mood, I could even miss that gloomy Snake Castle and the Black Forest….’

In truth, if only Kiern weren’t the Master, she might have stayed in the County of Basilian a bit longer.

There were still so many things she was curious about when it came to the Count’s family.

How had Count Basilian become the ruler of the Backworld?

Why was he stuck in the Eastern Black Forest despite wielding such power?

‘I’m also curious about why Kiern is collecting data related to the fairy experiment….’

She was especially curious about what the three brothers were doing in the Backworld.

‘They’re just boys, but if they had that kind of skill, they’d definitely stand out.’

Yet Chesha had never heard even a rumor about the three brothers.

Just then, she spotted Ishuel passing by with a parasol, and Karha gripping a sword in each hand.

The boys noticed her gaze and looked up at Chesha, who was sitting by the window.

Chesha waved to the twins to show she was there.

‘But if the three brothers keep going to the Backworld….’

Chesha would also continue to stay in the Backworld, so maybe she’d catch a glimpse of them from afar someday.

Of course, she wouldn’t go over and greet them.

But it would be nice just to see their faces for a moment.

It would be nice to see Kiern too, though it was difficult since most of her meetings with the Master were only meant for her death.

Seeing the twins wave back at her, Chesha smiled.

‘Anyway, I think I’d like to make sure everyone is doing well.’

***

Midnight dawn.

She tucked Hata into a small bag and slung it across her body.

She glanced around carefully to see if there was anything else to pack, but there was nothing.

Chesha tied a handkerchief around her head to hide her striking golden hair and waited by the door, fidgeting.

Creak…

Soon, the door opened with a low, drawn-out sound.

Belzeon, clad in an old black hood, stepped into the room.

He paused for a moment when he saw Chesha with the handkerchief tied around her head, then handed her a small hooded cloak.

Without a word, Chesha took off the handkerchief and pulled the hood up over her head.

‘But what about that bag?’

Belzeon was carrying a bag large enough to fit both Chesha and Hata.

It seemed odd to Chesha that Belzeon would carry such a large bag himself.

‘Is he giving me something as a gift?’

The bag was even bigger than she was.

Since he wouldn’t let a child leave alone, there was probably an adult assigned as her guardian.

Chesha reasoned to herself, imagining he’d hand the bag to that person later.

After putting on the robe, she looked up at Belzeon.

He bent down and pulled her into a hug, then wrapped his cloak around her and quietly slipped out of the mansion.

Belzeon moved without encountering a single person along the way.

He knew exactly when and where the staff would be passing by.

Kiern and the twins were out today, too.

She remembered what Belzeon had told her.

“I’ll make sure that all three of them won’t be able to come home that day.”

Worried that they would follow them.

Judging by how quiet it was, he seemed to have taken care of everything.

When they came out through the side door at the back of the mansion, there was a shabby and worn-out wagon.

The old coachman was dozing in the driver’s seat because of the early morning guests.

If they took that wagon, it would carry them to a safe place to hide from Kiern.

She took a peek inside, but it didn’t look like anyone was there.

She had expected there to be an adult to guide her, but no one was around.

‘Am I supposed to ride the carriage alone?’

Well, it didn’t really matter.

As long as it took her to the right destination, that was enough.

Belzeon slowly lowered Chesha to the floor.

Chesha took a small breath and looked up at him.

Now, it was really goodbye.

She looked at him, her eyes filled with affection, and said,

“I’m weally shankful.”

She offered a polite bow.

Then she waited, expecting to hear him say, “Alright, off you go.”

But Belzeon didn’t say anything.

‘What’s going on?’

He wasn’t the type to ignore a final farewell, but his silence was odd.

When the quiet stretched on, growing uncomfortable,

Belzeon finally spoke.

“I will go with you.”

Chesha blinked, unsure she’d heard him correctly.

For a moment, she doubted her own ears.

Carefully, she asked,

“…What?”

No way.

Tell me it’s no. Quickly!

That “What?” was a desperate plea in her mind.

But Belzeon didn’t bother repeating himself.

He simply continued, his expression calm.

“I’m just repaying the debt you gave me.”

“De-dep?”

To think that she had given Belzeon a debt.

‘That can’t be!’

Was she dreaming or something?

She couldn’t believe it.

Belzeon spoke briefly and quietly, as if he could see the disbelief in her eyes.

“…Because you comforted me. Me too, at least once.”

His words came out in fits and starts, but she understood.

‘So… you’re saying you’re following me to comfort me?’

Of course, she had comforted Belzeon once—by giving him a lily of the valley flower.

He’d been sobbing like a child, crying for a long time back then.

‘But I didn’t cry, did I?’

There was nothing she needed comforting for.

Still, Belzeon was acting strangely.

It was as if Chesha had grabbed him while crying out loud that she was lonely.

‘This is driving me crazy!’

Chesha looked as if she was about to leap forward.

‘What’s wrong with him?’

She was so embarrassed and dumbfounded that she stood there with her mouth open for a while.

Then, suddenly, she snapped back to her senses.

If she stayed still, Belzeon would keep following her.

Chesha quickly thought of an excuse and blurted it out.

“Bu-but you habe wok!”

In fact, Belzeon was in charge of many of the household duties of Count Basilian.

If he left, there would be a huge vacancy in the Count’s work.

She could already imagine the secretary and the servants all desperately searching for him.

Belzeon had always had a strong sense of responsibility.

She thought there was no way he’d leave his poor subordinates behind so easily…

“Well.”

Belzeon twisted the corner of his mouth into a smile.

That smile was so similar to Kiern’s that, for a moment, a shiver ran down Chesha’s spine.

“My damn father will take care of it.”

Belzeon, who had once been tormented by Kiern, had become corrupted.
