No matter how clever and brilliant Belzeon was, he was still young and painfully inexperienced.

Compared to Kiern, who had been shaped into a venomous snake by the filth of society, Belzeon was no more than a harmless hatchling.

While Belzeon ran forward, Kiern soared above him.

While Belzeon looked ahead and laid out plans, Kiern flipped the board entirely and redrew the game in his favor.

Now that things had come to this, even crossing into a foreign country as originally planned would be meaningless.

If Kiern decided to use the power of the Backworld—and even gained the support of Duke Yveroil—then escape would no longer be an option.

‘He’ll use both legal and illegal means—there’s no way they won’t get caught.’

All the more so because the Duke of Yveroil had no trouble operating across foreign borders.

But she couldn’t bring herself to break the little boy’s heart with the truth.

So instead, Chesha gently nudged Belzeon—who was heading straight for their destination—onto a slightly different path.

“Can you buy me fwower? Just one!”

“Flower?”

“Yees.”

It was a well-known fact among the Basilian men that Chesha liked flowers.

That made it easy to guide Belzeon toward the flower stall without raising suspicion.

Hilon, too, had sent a butterfly to lead him there, gently altering the course.

It wasn’t one of the witch-fairy’s magical butterflies, just an ordinary white one.

But if it were Hilon, he would follow it without question.

As expected, Hilon followed the butterfly and crossed paths with Belzeon.

The moment Chesha saw him, her eyes widened in surprise.

She broke into a bright smile and shouted cheerfully, as if running into Hilon by chance was the happiest surprise of the day.

“Mister Knight!”

As Chesha behaved like she already knew him, Belzeon’s guard relaxed a little.

Hilon offered a short introduction.

“I’m Hilon, a Holy Knight assigned to escort the child attending the Pre-Saint Prayer Meeting.

“…!”

Belzeon lifted his eyes slightly.

Clever as always, he quickly realized that this was a pretty good opportunity.

A relatively safe area—one that Kiern couldn’t interfere with.

A chance for young Chesha to avoid the hardship of a long and difficult journey.

After running through several decisions in his head, Belzeon looked up and gave Hilon his answer without hesitation.

“I am Belzeon Basilian of House Basilian.”

It was clearly unnatural for the heir of House Basilian to be wandering the streets with Chesha, completely out of the blue.

With worn clothes and a tense expression, he looked more like someone on the run.

Hilon’s eyes narrowed.

Even though he might feel intimidated by the sharp gaze, Belzeon resolutely continued his words.

“I’m still not sure if it’s right to bring such a young baby to the Pre-Saint Prayer Meeting… I had a difference of opinion with the Count, and I acted a bit immaturely because of it.”

It was a well-crafted story, carefully hiding just enough of the truth to bait the Holy Knight Hilon with something intriguing.

Hilon and Belzeon locked eyes.

The silence between them stretched on.

Had they silently confirmed that their intentions aligned?

When Hilon finally spoke, his tone was noticeably gentler.

“The temple can offer protection, if you’d like.”

“It’s okay. I don’t want to trouble you, Sir Knight.”

“I’m offering because I’m the one assigned to escort her—I can’t just ignore this. Even if she doesn’t attend the prayer meeting, it’s fine. Please don’t feel burdened.”

“…Then, I’m sorry—but yes, please.”

The conversation, though already settled, gracefully went through the motions of polite refusal and acceptance, reaching a shared understanding with ease.

‘Belzeon… you’ll do great in society, huh?’

Chesha couldn’t help but genuinely admire his remarkably skillful way of speaking and handling the situation.

In truth, there had been no need for such a convincing lie.

Even if Belzeon had refused, Hilon would’ve taken Chesha with him anyway.

As a Heresy Inquisitor investigating House Basilian, it was only natural for him to secure anyone involved.

“Oh, sowwy.”

Come to think of it, she had nearly forgotten something important.

“Can I take him wif me?”

Chesha held up Hata, who was clutching the entire bag in her arms.

From behind Hilon, she could hear Lieutenant Darren muttering under his breath.

“Is it a doll?”

“It’s a puppy.”

When his blue eyes turned to Hata, she felt a flicker of nervousness, but still lifted her chin proudly.

If even the beast-like Karha hadn’t caught on, then Hilon, a mere human, likely wouldn’t notice either.

Hata gave Hilon a grumpy little look.

Of course, to anyone else, it was just the pout of a cute puppy.

Hilon stared at Hata for a brief moment, then looked away indifferently and said.

“As you please.”

So the boy, the baby, and the dog went to the temple together with the holy knight.

The place Hilon brought Chesha to was the capital’s temple.

A grand structure befitting its place at the heart of the Great Empire.

Its outer walls, built from pure white marble, gleamed with such pristine polish they seemed to glow.

Towering columns flanked the main gate, lined in perfect symmetry. Anyone passing through them couldn’t help but feel a quiet pressure, as though the sheer order of the place pressed down on their shoulders.

Above, massive circular windows pierced the domed ceiling, casting a soft, reverent light throughout the temple’s vast interior.

Hilon’s lieutenant entered the temple first, presented his credentials, and announced Hilon’s arrival.

While the formalities were being handled, Hilon waited in front of the main gate with the other knights.

From what Chesha could overhear from a distance, it seemed the temple recognized Hilon as a first-rank Holy Knight.

‘Well… the Heresy Inquisitors are kept secret from the public, after all.’

Even if it wasn’t quite the same level as a Heresy Inquisitor, being a first-rank Holy Knight was still an exceptional position.

High enough that even the capital’s temple welcomed them with honor and congratulations.

“Hilon-nim!”

No matter how many times he had visited before, the priests and knights always welcomed Hilon with warmth and respect.

But this time, when they saw who he had brought with him, they were visibly startled.

Hilon arrived with a baby, a boy, and a dog—it was the last thing anyone expected.

And especially not Hilon—someone known for his lack of interest in children or displays of sympathy.

Naturally, Hilon paid no mind to their reactions.

Thanks to that indifference, Chesha and Belzeon were able to enter the temple without issue.

After putting on the white cape provided by the temple over her clothes, it finally felt real.

‘A witch fairy, staying as a guest in a temple…’

Truly, it was the end of the world.

‘I absolutely cannot let Hilon find out.’

If he ever did, the shame would follow her to the grave.

Chesha, who had briefly imagined what it would be like to get caught by Hilon, turned as pale as the white cape draped over her shoulders.

She silently vowed to avoid him as much as possible during her stay at the temple.

“Belzeon-nim, may I speak with you for a moment?”

Hilon’s lieutenant, Darren, stepped forward and led Belzeon away for a private conversation.

Left alone with Hilon, Chesha was startled to find herself face to face with him.

Without warning, Hilon lifted her into his arms…

Then, in a calm, detached voice, he asked.

“Did you want to eat something?”

At Hilon’s unexpected question, Chesha, the holy knight beside him, and even a passing priest all widened their eyes in disbelief.

“I heard babies eat often.”

Was this really the same Hilon, asking something so considerate?

Was something odd eaten in her absence?

While Chesha stared at him in shock, Hilon simply continued speaking in his usual calm, expressionless tone.

“I’m your escort until the Pre-Saint Prayer Meeting. So… it wouldn’t hurt to get a little closer. I also have a few questions.”

“Wh-what awe you cuwious about?”

“Well…”

He leaned in and whispered, a hint of meaning in his voice.

“Something like… your biological father.”
