It felt like a long dream. Yeon-young blinked, barely able to keep her mind from drifting. The memories Saeri had freed seemed to end here.

In her mind, she replayed the memories she had seen up to this point. It was as if the gaps between the memories she had lost had finally been filled in.

Ryu Won carefully took her hand in his. The warmth between their fingers was reassuring.

Looking into Ryu Won’s glassy eyes, it seemed that he too had glimpsed Saeri’s memories.

“We’re only halfway there.”

Yeon-young suddenly remembered what he had said. Ryu Won had said they were halfway there. She questioned his words.

After finding so many memories, what else is there between them?

Where is the other half of the missing memory?

She tightened her grip on Ryu Won’s hand, and he lifted the corner of his mouth slightly, as if he liked the touch.

There were still many secrets hidden in that smooth smile.

It wasn’t that he was hiding it on purpose. It was just that Saeri was bound by the golden age.

It was the world, and so was Tanato.

“Chairman.”

“Ji Hua held out long enough, but this is it, really.”

“Are you okay?”

Yeon-young looked at Saeri. Her gaze, which had been on her the whole time, naturally followed hers.

Her entire body became as transparent as a pane of glass, and it seemed that soon even her faintly visible silhouette would disappear completely.

Saeri motioned for Yeon-young to come closer. Yeon-young let go of Ryu Won’s hand and followed her instructions.

He frowned at the situation. A cool breeze wafted around her, suggesting that Ryu Won was still considering the situation and what to do with Saeri.

Yeon-young glanced at Ryu Won and shook her head from side to side. Then she felt the faintest trace of wind die down.

Saeri reached out and grasped her by the arms, and their foreheads touched, a sensation that was both warm and strange and familiar.

“Are you still worried about me now that you know everything?”

Yeon-young slowly raised her downcast eyes. The moment she met the sun in her eyes, she felt like she was in a field. She thought about Saeri’s question many times.

It brought back a lot of memories, but it didn’t make her feel resentful or angry.

It was just that reading Saeri’s memories made her understand Tanato a little better, and them in this situation.

Iris in the past and Yeon-young in the present had the same goal.

She wants to protect the souls of Tanato.

And that included humanity.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, Yeon-young let out a small laugh. She could see Ryu Won’s reaction when he realized she wanted to protect Saeri as well. Perhaps he would call her foolish and respect her wishes as always.

That’s what she believed. Suddenly, she was able to trust this strange and lovable man she had never known.

Ryu Won was right. The more she searched for memories, the more she fell in love with him.

From the beginning, it was a bet she couldn’t win.

He didn’t play losing games. So why shouldn’t Saeri?

Yeon-young snapped out of her thoughts and faced Saeri once more. She opened her mouth carefully.

“Resentment…, well, I don’t even know what it is.”

“…….”

“I just want to protect the world that accepted me. This beautiful place. And you, Chairman.”

For the first time, Saeri looked surprised at Yeon-young’s words. Yeon-young was taken aback.

Saeri’s eyes locked with Ryu-won’s over Yeon-young’s shoulder.

He watched with his hands in his uniform coat. It was a similar situation to the past, but the outcome was completely different.

Saeri spoke the words that had been buried for so long.

“I regret it.”

“…….”

“I regret it.”

Saeri’s words made Yeon-young flinch, but Ryu Won just shrugged, as if he’d seen it coming.

He took a step forward and stood close to her.

“I told you, you’re going to regret this, just like me.”

“Yeah, I thought you were crazy, but…, for once, you’re right.”

“I promised myself I’d tear you apart if I ever saw you again.”

“You should have. It would have been more than revenge.”

His voice was as cold as a winter wind, and in that chill, Yeon-young could see his sincerity.

Right now, he had the ability and the heart to kill Saeri.

Still, Ryu Won held back. His thick chest rose and fell as he endured the unpleasant emotions that poured out of him, all for the sake of Yeon-young’s request.

“In the end, it seems that gods are just as transient as humans.”

“…….”

“Or maybe even more immature. This one is so stupid I don’t even want to touch it.”

“That hurts.”

Ryu Won made a casual remark. Yeon-young listened to him, but didn’t try to talk him out of it.

Yeon-young knew that he was just being honest about his feelings.

Saeri didn’t say anything, as if she knew what he was thinking.

“Uh…”

“I’ll try to loosen the ban as much as I can, but don’t hold your breath.”

Before Yeon-young could process Saeri’s words, it happened: she felt her forehead grow slightly hotter against hers, and Saeri’s energy seeped into her, centering around the contact.

The hot, nostalgic sensation tugged at her heart for some reason. She wondered what this energy was.

Then she grabbed both of Saeri’s wrists.

“…Chairman!”

“Don’t be surprised. I saw it coming.”

Yeon-young’s gaze traveled to Saeri’s fingertips and toes. Saeri’s form was shattering like shards of glass. Yeon-young reached out and tried to grab hold of her, but it was useless.

The more Saeri’s energy passed to Yeon-young, the faster the form crumbled.

“I’m Tanato, and Tanato is me, so I’m just going back.”

“Stop talking.”

Yeon-young dug through the pockets of her coat, searching for Sly’s powder.

Secretly, she knew.

She was a god, not a spirit, so Sly’s powder wouldn’t work. Still, she wanted to try.

She wanted to protect her, now that she were reunited in Tanato.

“Do you know why gods exist?”

“Chairman, wait a minute…!”

“Because someone needs a god, so maybe you’re the one Tanato needs more.”

The hot aura that touched her forehead gradually cooled. Even Saeri’s face lost its shape, glowing like a crumbling sandcastle. Yeon-young clasped her own forehead in disbelief.

A fragment of Saeri’s soul hung in the air like the Milky Way, but even that beautiful light grew weaker and weaker.

Then, Saeri’s soft, sweet voice faintly sounded in his ears.

“I’ve given you all my power. There will be a time when you need it.”

“…….”

“Yeon-young, look at the ground.”

Saeri blended into the air and disappeared completely, like nature returning to where it belongs.

The god of the world had been wiped out.

Yeon-young stared blankly at the spot where Saeri had disappeared. At the same time, she felt as if someone had splashed water on her face, jolting her out of her reverie. She quickly slipped back into her memories.

“The tree…”

The place she was drawn to was none other than her memory, and her gaze was fixed on a huge flowering tree. Apparently, before, her tree had been chained and suppressed.

But now, all but one of the chains had been broken. She approached the tree with trepidation.

Saeri’s words about breaking the restraint made sense now.

Petals fluttered in the air, blotting out the blue sky. She couldn’t take her eyes off the breathtakingly beautiful and freeing scene.

Yeon-young wore only one chain. She could feel the chill of the metal against her fingertips.

“My last share…”

She gripped the chain hard. It was so hard that she couldn’t break it with her hands.

Yeon-young’s last share. The final conundrum she would solve alone.

She squeezed a little harder, until the muscles on her wrist stood out. Even looking at the chain now didn’t weigh her down like it had before.

An unknown confidence washed over her that the day would come when she would be able to break this one, too.

If this was hers, she thought, she would find it.

Now it was her turn to be more proactive.

This was something only she could and should do.
