“The temple…, how did… Ah, you remembered.”

“Just a little.”

Ryu Won’s eyes widened as the word temple came out of Yeon-young’s mouth.

She nodded her head slightly, giving him a look that said she wanted an answer.

He hugged her once more, harder, and whimpered.

“There was a Ms. Yeon-young in the temple, are you okay?”

“Me? The only person I remember was Mr. Ryu Won, so I was wondering.”

“…….”

“Why did you have to?”

The voice was a low, firm whisper, and Ryu Won lowered his gaze slightly. His eyes, visible beneath his dense lashes, were deep in thought.

He reached out and gently stroked Yeon-young’s hair.

She felt his gentle touch and waited for his answer.

“I really don’t know.”

“What?”

“Because there used to be a path that led there from the field, but it’s gone.”

“Gone?”

Puzzled by the answer, Yeon-young narrowed her eyes and stared at him.

But they weren’t lying eyes, and while she’d have to investigate further personally, it was probably true that it was gone.

Back to square one.

Yeon-young sighed heavily, her mind racing.

Removing his hand from her hair, Ryu Won slowly pushed himself to his feet, the tips of his ears growing hot at the realization that they had been talking for so long in an embarrassing position.

Yeon-young also stood up and leaned back against the sofa.

“What did you see at the temple?”

His question made her lips twitch.

Judging by Ryu Won’s reaction, she’d been to the temple before, but she couldn’t recall what she’d seen.

But if she were to tell him what she saw, she didn’t know where to start or how to ask.

Ryu Won threatened the White Slys, and his room was full of Negro-related items.

‘What if Mr. Ryu Won really is related to Negro?’

For the first time, she was afraid to ask him something. Yeon-young chewed on her lower lip.

Seeing her reaction, Ryu Won touched her lips with his thumb and gently nudged her lower lip without hurting her.

Her lips felt hot, like they were on fire.

“Yeah, it’s a memory we both don’t want to think about.”

“…….”

“I’m sure it’s complicated today, so we’ll talk about it another time. Get some rest.”

The conversation came to a close.

Questions rolled around in her mouth, but in the end, she couldn’t get any of them out.

Sitting still on the couch, Yeon-young nodded in anticipation of what was to come next.

Ryu Won continued to watch her back until she reached the stairs.

Back in her room, Yeon-young stared at the key in her hand. Her palms smelled faintly of iron.

She’d tucked the mask away in a drawer, but she’d forgotten she had the key in her hand.

She hesitated for a moment, then tucked the key into her uniform coat.

She wouldn’t be able to get back into that room now anyway.

“Hah…”

She let out a long sigh and dropped to the floor.

Her keys clinked against the stuff in her pockets.

“What do they use keys for, a temple maybe?”

At first glance, the room where she found it didn’t have a hole for a key.

That meant it had to be used somewhere else, but nothing came to mind.

Yeon-young listened in the room next door to Ryu Won’s.

The walls were thick, so she couldn’t hear him, but she could see his core running comfortably.

She placed her hands on her stomach, closed her eyes, and recalled the conversation she’d had with him before coming to the room.

“Was there a Yeon-young in the shrine, are you okay?”

The past Yeon-young had definitely been to the temple.

‘What had she done at the temple?’

Knowing that Yeon-young was involved made the reason to go to the temple even more clear.

“I’ll go to the library.”

As Yeon-young thought of different ways to get to the temple, she remembered the library.

From the first floor to the second floor, it was filled with books. She thought she might be able to find some information about the temple in the library.

With her mind made up, Yeon-young stood up and took off her coat.

She noticed a light pink core under the sleeve of her shirt. It had the shape of a round sphere and emitted a steady light.

Now she could see the core without having to concentrate too hard.

However, she could also clearly see the precariously cracked surface. It looked like it had been glued together by force.

She could even see a few empty spaces between the cracks.

Now she understood why Pawn had called her an unstable soul.

“My abilities have certainly improved.”

The more she used her powers, the more she grew. Yeon-young lifted her arm to examine her core a little closer.

Unlike when she’d been recuperating at Ryu Won’s house, her power was no longer fluctuating.

As she watched the core ripple like a gentle wave, she suddenly wondered.

Does this ability only allow her to see other people’s memories?

Yeon-young’s eyes widened like a light bulb.

“Why didn’t I think of it the other way around?”

The memories and secrets she wanted to know in the first place all involved her.

After all, she’s the one with the most memories.

Conversely, there might be more to learn by entering the space of her memories.

“I’m not sure, but…”

Of course, she doubted she could see the memories themselves, but it wasn’t a bad idea.

After staring at the core for a while, Yeon-Young closed her eyes and concentrated.

She moved very slowly, like she was slowly pouring a stream of power into someone else.

The core’s energy spread through her body, and she tried to see past its warmth and delve deeply into it.

Then something began to reveal itself in the darkness of her vision.

It was Tanato’s field.

“Wow… What is this, a failure or a success…”

Yeon-young stood in a place she couldn’t tell if it was the past or the present.

Unable to hide her confusion, she swallowed a sigh and took a step forward.

The field was silent. No Sly, no Yeon-Young, no Ryu Won. There was no sign of any living creatures.

She continued walking out into the field, alone.

“What is that?”

Instead of a pillar, there was a very large tree planted on top of the field.

Its light pink petals, the color of her soul, were in full bloom, blowing in the breeze.

Yeon-young caught one of the petals as it flew toward her, and the memory of her daily subway ride came flooding back.

Yes, these petals were all her memories. Apparently, she had succeeded in entering the memory space.

She had a rough estimate of the number of petals. It was a huge number, almost as many as Ryu Won.

For a moment, she was speechless at the breathtaking scenery, and then she let out a small groan.

The trees were chained from the trunk to the leaves. The chains poking out of the ground were intimidating to look at.

It looked like a punishment, like it was chained and unable to grow any further.

“Why are they chained like that?”

Yeon-Young moved a little closer to the tree, for this was the first time in all her time of reading the memories of other souls that she had seen the space organized this way.

She reached out toward the chains. But it bounced back before she could touch the surface.

It was blocked, as if it would not allow her to enter.

“Why?”

Yeon-young remembered Ryu Won and Jaeho’s reaction. They wanted to tell her their memories of her, but they couldn’t, as if something was holding them back.

Maybe this chain had something to do with it. Yeon-young tilted her head and studied the tree in silence.

She could see the petals, but the closer she looked, the more blurred they became.

Yeon-young lowered her head, feeling as if her eyes were about to fall out. She rubbed her eyes with both hands.

“Is there something that it doesn’t like me remembering?”

It was a reasonable inference.

There was no reason for this to happen so many times in a row unless someone was deliberately muzzling them, putting a lock on her memories.

‘Who could be interfering with her so much?’

Yeon-young clenched her fists and furrowed her brow. With no memory, she had no clue.

“I guess that’s something I’ll have to find out.”

Another thing for Yeon-young to dig into.

She rubbed her hand across her throbbing forehead and backed away from the tree a little.

Staying here wasn’t going to help her now.

Just then, another petal slowly fell toward her. She reached out and grabbed it.

Then a mournful, familiar voice spoke from the petal.

“Iris.”

The name that flowed from the voice was one she knew well.

It was Iris, the name of the source of the Tanato world.
