Lowering his head, he brushed against her tightly closed lips, moistening them. Then he parted the rusted crack and stuck his tongue in.

“Hmph, Grand duke…”

“Name.”

He wrapped one arm tightly around her slender waist, his thrusting gestures relentless.

Several times her consciousness flickered to white and the object in front of her lost and regained form.

But there was no regret.

To be able to hold him, to touch his soft, supple flesh, filled her hollow heart with excitement.

“Okay, hmmm, I love it…”

Her head was so swamped with heat that she had no time to think about where she was or what she was doing.

The bed shook like it was going to break.

“Ha, ha.”

Hot, humid breaths that grew increasingly ragged.

The sticky sound rang in her ears, scattering her troubled thoughts into thin air.

“Ha, I’m going to die.”

He seemed to do the same.

His thick neck stood on end, and the muscles in his cracked thighs bulged from the constant movement.

As if possessed by something, an indescribable pleasure swirled through them at a frenzied pace.

“You know how erotic your face looks when you feel it.”

“I don’t know. Hmmmm…”

“You don’t know. On that note, I’ll make sure to bring a mirror next time.”

He lapped up the dried rose-scented saliva greedily.

When she moaned frantically, biting her lip to hold it together, he swallowed her lips and pressed the root of his tongue against hers as if to say he didn’t need to.

Pleasure, hot as embers, throbbing like a bursting fire, lingered in their tangled bodies.

* * *

How much time passed like that.

Wrapped in the covers, Evelyn lay in his arms, waiting for all her disoriented senses to return to their proper place.

She was too exhausted to move a finger, too afraid to look at his face.

She couldn’t bring herself to look at his face because she was too tired to move a finger, too afraid to look at him.

‘If it wasn’t as innocent as he said, why should I be ashamed of myself?’

In the midst of her self-doubt, she heard an unexpected snap of his fingers.

The only time he made this sound was when he worked his magic.

“Surely you’re not trying to teleport me somewhere in this state?”

She poked her head out of the covers, embarrassed, and saw the reflection of her and Kalian in the window, lying morosely on the bed.

The next thing she saw was.

“Wow… what is this?”

A tiny, cute light, like a firefly, surrounded her.

A languid voice came from behind her.

“I thought you might like this.”

“I do like it, but…”

‘Why did he suddenly think of that?’

Her brief question was quickly drowned out by the light floating in front of her.

“It’s so pretty, it’s amazing…”

“I’m glad you like it.”

A single candle burned brightly in the dimly lit room, adding to the dreamy atmosphere of the room like a scene from a fairy tale.

While she’s in that magical mood.

“I think we’re a good match in more ways than one.”

He broke the trance and stroked her flowing hair affectionately.

“What do you think?”

She stirred and turned, still in his arms, her eyes only moving to look at him.

She couldn’t tell what he meant by the question, but she was sure of one thing.

She thought so much had changed, but he hadn’t changed much from his past life.

As much as he hated her, he was always worried about hurting her. Though his words were somewhat strong, it was only the arrogance of a nobleman, and his actions were still kind.

And that fact hurt and tormented her deeply.

He had only shown her the bare minimum of courtesy, and as she reflected on it, she felt like a fool for dwelling on the faded past.

‘It’s one thing to be compatible, it’s quite another to love.’

Sighing inwardly, Evelyn snuggled into his arms like a kitten.

“The truth is, I don’t really know what it means to… fit in.”

The hand that had been playing with her earlobe slid down to caress her cheek.

“That’s a pretty pathetic answer.”

“Don’t feel bad, it’s just that I’ve never been matched with anyone, so I have nothing to compare it to, but…”

Evelyn rubbed her cheek in her large palm and locked eyes with him.

“I don’t know anything else, but I do know this: no one but you… will ever give me this sensation.”

A strange silence followed.

Their gazes locked; their eyes chained together.

Evelyn spoke with a faint sincerity as she gazed into his darkened golden eyes.

“And this is a sensation I only want to share with you, Kalian.”

‘I don’t think he’ll mind if I confess this much. It’s not like I’m saying I love him…’

When she averted her gaze out of habit, he paused, and then, as if he couldn’t resist, he cupped her chin and swallowed deeply against her lips.

“Suck.”

The scent of cologne, heavy and pungent, hit her nostrils and took over her from head to toe.

Evelyn shook her head impatiently.

“Oh, that’s enough for today, I’ll be busy tomorrow, and if I strain myself…”

She pushed him away, trying to fan the flames of pleasure again, but he cleared his throat and dug in deeper.

“I appreciate your concern, but you shouldn’t have provoked me if you didn’t mean to.”

He muttered a reprimand, then took Evelyn’s bottom lip into his mouth and sucked gently.

“I, I don’t know when, uh.”

The whole process of sliding his tongue between the parted lips and wetting it was slow, reawakening the fading sensations.

“Ha.”

Before long, his lips parted.

His golden pupils, shadowed beneath thick, dark lashes, focused on her, as if etched into her retina.

“Don’t be afraid, it’ll be much easier this time.”

“You have to understand, I don’t have the strength to take you fully.”

She’s puzzled by his stubbornness.

“There’s one thing I’d like to ask you.”

He leaned in and stroked her back slowly, as if in good faith.

“On the day we first met, did you ever have anything to do with me before that day?”

“I don’t know what you mean…”

Her heart sank. But he didn’t mean to be accusatory, so he continued in a soft tone.

“As time goes on, I can’t shake the feeling that you already knew me deep down, even before we met.”

“That’s because there is no one in the Empire who doesn’t know you, the… Guardian.”

Where he was going with this, Evelyn couldn’t tell.

How would he react if she told him she was living the same life over and over again, that he shouldn’t doubt her now, but he wouldn’t be convinced either.

She stiffened, feeling as if she’d been stabbed in the back, and chose to keep her mouth shut instead of saying more.

After a moment of silence, Kalian, his hand caressing her face in thought, spoke again.

“You didn’t even know I was cursed back then.”

“…….”

“And yet you approached me in a rage, unafraid. Even if you had healing powers, you would normally have run away.”

It’s too reckless to be well-meaning. Knowing full well that being caught in a rampage could kill you. Why?

Evelyn bit her lip as she stared into the golden eyes that seemed to ask.

“…That, that.”

“If you chose me simply as an excuse to run away from the Count, then your actions are questionable on every level.”

Perhaps she should have been more selfish.

“That doesn’t mean you were vindictive or vengeful, for you said you were satisfied that the cunning woman was left in a monastery.”

Evelyn’s pupils fluttered, and Kalian nodded with conviction.

“You said you had no feelings for me, so you must not love me.”

Wrong.

She sighed inwardly and lowered her eyes out of habit, and Kalian gently tipped her chin up.

Then, as if to confirm, he asked.

“Can you tell me why you had no choice but to choose me?”

She wanted to look away, but I couldn’t move, trapped by the way his eyes searched mine for answers.

Evelyn’s white face flushed red, and she answered in a whisper.

“I did it because I loved you.”

Despite her ostensible purpose to decipher the curse and seek revenge, Evelyn wanted to help him.

She wanted to tell him what she knew of the future, and use it, and herself, to help Calian gain ground.

‘Though I didn’t think this would bring the saint into the spotlight.’

She wouldn’t believe him if he told her he’d returned from the past, so he’d have to come up with some other excuse, but he couldn’t think of one that would be convincing.

Evelyn thought long and hard before answering, her voice trembling.

“Because I knew I could not escape that infernal place, and I thought its better to die.”
