The author’s here?

My lungs are trembling.

Not because of the author, though.

My hands are trembling too.

This one’s definitely because of the author.

I clicked on the message and a long text appeared.

「Thank you for cherishing my inadequate work. I too wish I could provide a better ending, but unfortunately it seems my abilities only go this far.

This work is currently scheduled for a remake.

However, my strength alone is insufficient, so I’ve been looking for someone to help.

This is sudden, but would you be able to join me in the revision work?」

A remake—that’s very welcome!

But me?

Our author didn’t read the message properly, did they?

「Author, thank you so much for your reply! A remake! I’m really looking forward to it.

I’d love to help if I could, but unfortunately I don’t have much time left.

Even without me, I believe you’ll deliver a good ending.」

Send.

Something feels regretful.

It’s not like the thought ‘Then you should’ve done it right from the start!’ didn’t cross my mind, but if the ending’s changing, I should cheer them on.

Right, even if it’s after I’m gone, isn’t any improvement better than nothing!

Just as I was nodding along, intoxicated by my own magnanimity, a reply came.

「Thank you for accepting my proposal. I wish you the best.」

Did I accept a proposal at some point?

Wondering if there might have been room for misunderstanding in my expression, I reread the message I sent, but there’s no such nuance at all.

Should I write more explicitly ‘I’m dying any day now’ and send it? As I hesitated,

Cough, cough!

Suddenly all the coughing burst out at once.

Crazy, this hurts too much!

Every time my lungs went up and down, tremendous pain hit me, and the coughing showed no signs of stopping.

Before I knew it, my consciousness became hazy, and a dazzling light covered my vision.

* * *

I’d always wondered what happens when you die.

The time has finally come to solve that curiosity!

First, your body becomes a single earthworm.

But instead of wriggling around, it flies like some shooting star.

Fwoooosh!

As an earthworm, I flew at a speed that made me motion sick and got stuck somewhere with a thunk.

The surroundings are still pitch black.

I can’t see anything, but strangely I know where this is.

Looking at this, it’s clearly inside human blood vessels!

Near the toes, it seems.

Toes feel a bit iffy, so shall I try going up?

Wahaha! What’s this! It’s like a water park!

As I excitedly rode along the blood vessels, something amazing happened.

After one lap around the left foot, I could feel sensations in my left foot.

After circling the right foot, I could feel both legs.

The waist, both arms, and through the neck to the head. The blood vessel ride continued.

Arriving at the head and crawling through the brain’s wrinkles, a movie suddenly played. Rather than a movie with a beginning and ending, it’s just a montage of someone’s memories.

The protagonist of the movie is Yeon Sora.

Yeon Sora, Yeon Sora…

Who might you be?

The memories of a mysterious young woman named ‘Yeon Sora’ are flowing into my consciousness.

I’ve never heard of Yeon Sora, but in her memories appears a person I know.

That burning orange hair and amber eyes.

An incredible pretty boy without equal in the world!

That’s… isn’t that Yeom Juwan?

Yeom Juwan is one of the main supporting characters in <On the Brink of Destruction>, and a kid who ranks 3rd in my bias ranking.

And Yeon Sora is Yeom Juwan’s childhood friend, apparently.

Crackle!

After a tingling sensation spread as if electrocuted, my eyes opened.

❴Dimensional transfer complete.❵

❴You have entered ❮I Possessed Into an Academy on the Brink of Destruction.❯❵

❴Synchronization with character ‘Yeon Sora’ complete.❵

Though my vision had returned for the first time in a while, I quickly closed my eyes.

Thump-thump.

My heart was racing so fast it felt like it would burst. But I forcibly calmed myself and organized the current happening.

Let’s see.

① A devoted reader obsessed with a novel.

② Communication with the author.

③ A request to ‘help with the remake.’

④ A stranger’s memories and a dimensional transfer message.

This is… that thing, right?

No matter how I look at it, there’s no other answer, right?

A thrill spread evenly throughout my body along my spine.

‘Aah, this is what possession is!’

The technical term: possession. Subcategory: book possession.

Genres: modern fantasy, hunter story, academy story.

No doubt about it.

I’ve possessed into the novel I love most.

* * *

The hologram window disappeared as soon as it appeared.

‘Status window?’

‘Trait window?’

I earnestly called out various keywords in my mind, but no answer came back.

‘Haven’t awakened yet?’

The worldview of <On the Brink of Destruction> is a typical hunter story worldview.

Thirty years ago, rifts that appeared with a great earthquake. And the monsters that burst out from within those rifts.

Monsters that were unfazed by guns, missiles, and even nuclear bombs fell easily to swords wielded by awakened ones.

Those who awaken game-like abilities and slaughter monsters are called ‘hunters.’

Not everyone awakens—only about 10% of humanity awakens, apparently.

If the status window doesn’t appear, the reason is one of two things.

Either I haven’t awakened yet, or this is a body that can’t awaken.

Whichever it is, there’s nothing I can do about it right now.

I cleanly gave up on the status window and looked around to find that I was traveling on a bus.

Blackout curtains are drawn making the interior dim, and it’s quiet as if everyone’s asleep. And in the seat next to me, a boy with orange hair has his eyes closed.

Th-this is… Yeom Juwan live-action ver.?

Gulp.

I swallowed my dry saliva.

It’s dizzying enough that a character I love—a pretty boy with reality-defying beauty at that—is sleeping right before my eyes, but even more…

‘Yeom Juwan’s still small?’

I’ve come face to face with a truly rare sight.

In the early part of the novel, Yeom Juwan is a shrimp at 165cm tall. Such a shrimp experiences a certain incident and overnight grows a whopping 20 centimeters taller, evolving into a magnificent beast.

Yeom Juwan appears in illustrations only after completing his growth.

In other words, shrimp Yeom Juwan has never even appeared in illustrations. That rare sight is unfolding right before my eyes.

Major score!

Wait, let me recalibrate my vision a bit.

I rubbed my eyes and took in Yeom Juwan with my much clearer mind and vision.

Looking closely, his hair isn’t orange but crimson, huh?

The freckles lightly scattered on his face—so cute!

Those plump baby cheeks are totally adorable!

Those soft, mochi-like cheeks—I want to poke them just once!

The desire to poke pierces the sky, but I can’t.

That kid—my kid, but he’s got quite the temper.

Besides, Yeom Juwan is one of the top three flame mages in the <On the Brink of Destruction> worldview. If I fiddle with his cheeks because he’s cute, I might become a skewer roasted fingers and all.

Anyway, the fact that Yeom Juwan’s still a shrimp means…

‘C-can I see the transformation process?’

That means I can witness the historic moment firsthand. Just the thought makes my chest swell with grandeur.

I want to see him open his eyes soon, but he’s sleeping so soundly? But I can’t wake him by force either.

I had no choice but to turn my gaze away.

Wondering if there might be other characters since Yeom Juwan is here, I looked around, but it’s difficult to confirm in a bus with blackout curtains drawn.

Should I go back to looking at Yeom Juwan?

No, wait!

Is now the time to be leisurely admiring faces?

I’ve read more than one or two possession stories, yet I made a rookie mistake.

At times like this, I need to quickly identify who I’ve possessed!

‘Yeon Sora’s’ memories are still downloading in my head. The file size must be quite large—it seems like it’ll take a while.

The one fact I know right now:

Just the setting that ‘Yeon Sora is Yeom Juwan’s childhood friend.’

But in <On the Brink of Destruction>, there’s absolutely no screentime for Yeom Juwan’s childhood friend.

Which means she’s an extra who doesn’t even appear…

For additional clues, I rummaged through the front pocket of the backpack I was holding and found a wallet.

Inside was a student ID.

[Wooryeon Middle School 3rd Year, Yeon Sora].

A “Huh” escaped me without realizing.

Because there’s an elf photo on Yeon Sora’s student ID.

Both hair and eyes are ash pink.

The pink with a subtle golden glow creates a mysterious atmosphere, the long eye shape is somewhat cat-like, and the sharp 45-degree angle nose bridge is simply art.

She looks a bit cold and aloof, but this is Yeon Sora… so from today, me?

I wanted to check a mirror immediately, but unfortunately Yeon Sora wasn’t carrying one.

I’ll have to go to the bathroom first when I get off the bus!

For now, satisfied with the appearance!

No, not satisfied—at this level I should prostrate and bow.

Author, please accept my bow!

A second life in my favorite novel, as an elf girl, with characters who’ve grasped the truth!

Dying young was worth it.

And with possession perks on top of this, using knowledge only I have to march forward triumphantly…

‘Ah.’

My head suddenly went cold.

Crazy, is now the time to be distracted by possession?

Only I know the ending of this world!

An ending where protagonists, supporting characters, and extras all hold hands nicely and get brutally killed!

I can’t feel safe just because I’m a nameless extra.

This novel’s ending is destruction.

It’s a novel with zero survivors.

“What are you doing?”

I turned my head to find Yeom Juwan, whom I’d been wanting to talk to, finally awake.

The elongated eyes I saw in the illustration are still round. His amber eyes are soft like a ripe persimmon.

“Are you sick?”

Yeah, this noona… my heart hurts.

Even the fear of destruction is powerless before a face genius.

Anyway, my baby has a pretty voice too?

“What’s wrong, are you nervous?”

“Ah, yeah.”

Crazy, people of the world!

I’m having a conversation with Yeom Juwan right now!

‘Is this a dream?’ I wondered, when Yeom Juwan’s hand firmly gripped my shoulder.

Judging by how vivid the warm body temperature is, it’s definitely not a dream.

“Don’t be scared. No one dies in the awakening test, right?”

Awakening… test?

That’s a term I’ve heard often… surely not that, the awakening test that appears in the early part of the novel?

“We’ve arrived! Starting from the front row, please exit slowly and in order.”

Without time to ask back, the bus stopped and an adult in the front seat began giving instructions.

When I obediently got off the bus as told, I saw a black pillar before my eyes.

A massive pillar large enough to fill my entire field of vision.

That thing emanating an ominous aura is…

“…The Tower.”

“What’s wrong? Like you’re seeing the Tower for the first time.”

The Tower suddenly rose three years after the Great Rift incident. And as towers reaching to the sky tend to do, it was given the name [Tower of Babel].

There’s one in Seoul, but also in Washington, Paris, and fairly in every capital city worldwide.

That place is the site of the ‘awakening test.’

According to the setting, depending on test results, awakened ones go to awakener-exclusive academies while non-awakened ones advance to regular high schools.

“Why do you look like you’re about to die?”

In front of the chuckling Yeom Juwan, I barely squeezed out my voice.

“Inside the Tower is dangerous.”

“It is dangerous. But it’s not like we’re going in alone.”

Yeom Juwan has an expression that says ‘What nonsense are you talking about?’

The awakening test is conducted on the relatively safe first floor of the Tower, and rankers accompany them for the students’ safety.

In the <On the Brink of Destruction> setting, there has never been a single casualty during the awakening test.

Until now.

Author's Thoughts

Ah, right. I forgot to explain one thing.
If you are readers that already read the previous translator's work, there is something I need to tell you.
The version of the novel that I translate have slight, maybe more, differences.
For example in their translation, I noticed from the Synopsis/Description of the novel in NU, they translated "Possessor" into "Reader." While technically not wrong, plot wise, but the author use the word "possession" not "reader" explecitly.
And others small things like "Doomed Academy," I changed it into "On the Brink of Destruction." I could list them all, but it would take quite a while (and I'm lazy as well, hehe)
All these also one of the reasons that I decided to translate from the first chapter instead of continuing from where they left off.

I said everything that I wanted to say! Again, thank you for reading!
