People’s shock turned into curiosity.

But it was not the scowling crown prince who yelled at Alice in rage.

“Alice Everizen!”

The emperor was the one speaking forcefully.

Mirania’s eyes narrowed upon seeing the emperor’s furious expression.

‘What? It’s not the time for the emperor to step forward.’

The Crown Prince and Empress maintained the same expressions, in contrast to those who were baffled.

The Empress even sneered and hugged her young son’s shoulders.

Demonstrating her lack of involvement in the matter was her goal.

“Your Majesty, I don’t like it. As I said…,” said Alice in a trembling voice.

Her pale face flushed blue with pity for him. Some feared she would pass out right there.

However, it was not Alice who fell, but someone else.

The emperor’s face, which erupted in anger, was still red, and it was even getting worse.

The Emperor finally clutched his chest, swallowing his agonizing groans.

The glass broke as it dropped from his quivering hand.

Clank!

Bloody red wine spread over the golden floor.

Alice’s face turned pale, “Your Majesty!”

The royal guard’s knights dashed in to support the emperor’s body before he fell.

Despite being quite old, two royal knights had come in support of helping a well-rounded emperor.

“What’s happening all of a sudden?”

When the crown prince asked sharply, the wizard bowed in embarrassment.

“It looks like His Majesty’s condition has worsened due to overexertion.”

The Empress, who had been indifferent until just now as if it was none of her business, urged Alice sternly.

“Alice Everizen. You’re His Majesty’s doctor. Do something about it.”

Alice was the target of concerned looks from the wizard, the royal knight, and other people.

Alice stood looking helpless, her hands trembling.

She did not budge an inch from her fixed gaze on the emperor.

“Why isn’t she doing anything?”

Someone whispered that it was strange as she stood still.

“Isn’t the atmosphere quite strange? There is no way that there is a rumor that His Majesty and Lady Everizen have some kind of relationship…”

“Don’t talk nonsense.”

“But look at Her Majesty’s expression. She looks at her as if she’s going to eat Lady Alice.”

Mirania cast a glance at Grecan, who seemed indifferent even in this circumstance.

Grecan appeared composed, unlike when Alice first appeared.

“It’s not that I’m not doing anything, it’s because I can’t do anything,” Mirania muttered.

Grecan tilted his head as if to ask what she was saying.

“Her illness has already sunk deep into her, and her weakened body cannot use her healing power.”

Alice’s healing powers resemble Mirania’s.

Simply by performing them, healing techniques based on life, blood, the body, and everything that comprises our being are too much for the body to handle.

“It would be extremely challenging to heal the emperor in such a state,” Mirania stated, casting the emperor’s face in agony.

Mirania could see that the core of Alice’s life was shaking.

Alice bit her lip and walked closer to the emperor.

The emperor shifted his body back to avoid her hand just before it reached to touch him.

“Your Majesty!”

When Alice’s eyes widened in bewilderment after the emperor refused treatment, the emperor blinked for a moment.

No longer did the emperor display any signs of pain; instead, he had pushed aside the guard knight who was standing by his side.

“Are you okay, Your Majesty?”

“Yeah. It’s fine. It’s all right. Don’t make a fuss.”

People were relieved when the emperor declared as much. Mirania, on the other hand, was not blind to the emperor’s bristling veins.

The emperor was still the emperor, pain concealed by a very profound visage.

His ability to control his facial expressions was so good that people believed the emperor was feeling better.

‘The position of emperor was not maintained for nothing.’

Seeing an impending human death conceal his suffering was a pretty unsettling experience.

Unknowingly whistling, Mirania reasoned that while people are intricate, they are still interesting to observe.

An aristocratic man nearby stared at Mirania with a look on his face as if he had misheard something.

Mirania lifted her hand as if asking when she had whistled.

What’s to whistle in this situation? The doubtful man soon forgot his question as he was mesmerized by Mirania’s beautiful face.

“Growl.”

Grecan’s voice was crude as he closed the man’s view of sight and yanked Mirania into his arms.

As the emperor was being assisted by Alice with the Royal Knights, Mirania glanced alternately at the Crown Prince, the Prime Minister, the Empress, and Alice.

‘Let’s wait.’

“What kind of situation is this?”

The answer came back to her.

“Probably a complicated situation?”

Mirania was embraced by Malandor as he approached. Grecan’s eyes grew wide as his strength propelled him.

“Look at the faces of the humans. Anxious to eat at each other.”

“…”

“Mirania, Malandor is scared of this kind of passionate fight.”

Malandor spoke with a hint of interest, but his sparkling eyes were fixed on the Emperor’s family as he craned his head forward.

With a pitying expression, Mirania clicked her tongue at the perfect contrast between her words and deeds.

🐾

That night.

While resting in bed, Mirania dozed off and gradually opened her eyes to the sensation of unease that was beginning to overwhelm her.

Her gaze shifted to her body. The blanket bulged up in a bizarre shape. Mirania was not surprised, as it happened every night in the witch’s castle.

A hand that popped out of the blanket embraced Mirania’s waist.

Mirania patted Grecan’s hair, sticking out of the blanket.

“I have a question. Mirania.” said Grecan.

“What is it?”

“… How can a woman I’ve never met appear in my dreams? I didn’t think she was a real living woman.”

Mirania looked up at the ceiling, instantly remembering Alice.  An indifferent Grecan to those around him who have been pondering.

For now, Alice was the only thing on his mind.

After all, wasn’t it normal for Grecan to meet Alice?

‘It’s natural. It is also a destiny decided by this world for Grecan to fall in love with Alice.’

“Is she a wizard?”

“She’s not a wizard. She is not a pure human, either.”

“…”

“Did you notice?”

When asked if Grecan’s calm reaction was strange, Grecan nodded.

His black hair tickled Mirania’s palms.

“Yes. It smells different. She smelled sweet. I hope…”

“Like fruit from a tree?”

“Oh…”

“Yes.”

After a while, Mirania opened her lips again, lost in thought as she tipped her head slightly in Grecan’s direction and stroked his hair while he was clinging to her waist.

“What did you think when you saw Alice?” asked Mirania.

“What?”

“Weren’t you curious about Alice? I mean, what were you thinking back then?”

Grecan didn’t answer back immediately, “That woman… It’s weird.”

“Why?”

“She was a girl I had never met before, and I felt like I had to protect her.” continued Grecan.

Mirania clasped Grecan’s shoulder, which snuggled further into her arms.

“What is this feeling, Mirania?”

“…”

“There’s nothing Mirania doesn’t know.”

Mirania wondered for a moment whether she should tell this or not.

When Mirania didn’t say anything, Grecan poked his head out of the blanket.

Her eyes met with pure and innocent black eyes.

At that moment, it occurred to Mirania that there would be no problem in answering him.

‘I never thought I would say something like this.’

“It is love,” said Mirania.

“What?”

“You are neither a philanthropist nor a saint. Why would you want to protect someone who has nothing to do with you?” said Mirania.

“…”

“I see, you must have liked Alice.”

‘The time I spent raising them was not in vain.’

This was the thought that occupied Mirania’s mind. Even if Grecan cares about Alice, he won’t attack her without thinking.

As Mirania answered in a relaxed manner, Grecan’s eyes wavered.

Mirania closed her eyes, ignoring his reaction.

“I have more work to do tomorrow, so go to sleep quickly.”

“What is love?” Grecan belatedly asked.

Mirania listened, eyes closed, to the cautious questions asked by Grecan.

“I have no idea what love is. I don’t know why Mirania says that, and I don’t know why it feels weird hearing it.”

“…”

“Answer me. Mirania knows everything, right?”

Mirania wondered for a moment whether to pretend to be sleeping.

‘What do you mean I know everything?’

Of course, she indeed knows a lot after living for a thousand years, but what Grecan asked was the essence of ‘love.’

It’s the only thing she couldn’t answer calmly.

Mirania recounted the words of those who had told her, ‘This is what love is like.’

Like looking at someone else’s answer sheet and copying it, she answered him.

“It’s something you want to protect.”

“…”

“You want to feed them only delicious and good things, and… ”

“…”

“Even if they get sick, you also hope that the person you love gets better. Sacrificing is something you can only do willingly for the person you love.”

“…”

“And… Do I have to tell you more?”

Mirania quickly lost interest.

Since I was explaining something I didn’t know, I rambled on for a long time, but as I continued to talk, my characteristic laziness appeared.

“I want to hear more,” said Grecan.

Mirania frowned at the tactless request but was forced to open her mouth and answer again.

“You will always want to be with them, it’s fun to do things you don’t like with the person you love, even the gray sky looks sunny, whatever you eat looks delicious, and the petals are flying around, I guess you’re seeing that kind of fantasy.”

Towards the end, her half-whispering voice became tinged with sleep.

It wasn’t long before Mirania gave up on explaining further and started breathing regularly.

Grecan carefully clasped Mirania’s slender waist.

A scent that could only be felt by snuggling to her side was sucked into his nostrils.

His ears perked up, and he kept every word Mirania had said firmly in his head.

Grecan had no choice but to engrave it to his head. Because each one of them was, every explanation was very familiar.

“That’s love?”

There was no other answer.

Grecan, staring at Mirania’s sleeping face, buried his face in her shoulder.

A deathly silence fell in the quiet room.

“It’s strange, Mirania.”

“…”

“I’ve been feeling like this for 15 years already.”

Grecan’s confused voice spread forlornly in the room.
